ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): The best new films I saw this past week were Sundays and Cybele on wonderful Criterion Blu-ray and Lav Diaz' masterpiece Norte, The End of History with its impressive cinematography. And revisiting Jules Dassin's Brute Force in 1080P was a true treat. I got a kick out of Eureka's Blacula: The Complete Collection and hope for even more Blaxploitation on Blu-ray. Walerian Borowczyk's Goto, Isle of Love looks like a giant leap beyond the previous DVDs - boding well for Arrow's Boxset. Joe Dante's The 'Burbs never ceases to entertain and the new Blu-ray package is, notably, the definitive for this fun film. Borzage's A Farewell to Arms is a must-own and the BFI have given us a worthy HD package. on DVD Gregory reviewed the vintage crime/drama Stage Struck while Eric covered visionary Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman's A Jester's Tale from Second Run and Refuge - a highly-regarded modern romance. Lets get through this week together - till next time!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The 'Burbs BD - Family man Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) is looking forward to a week of putting his feet up at home in the quiet, leafy cul-de-sac of Mayfield Place. But his plans are scuppered by the arrival of new next-door neighbours, The Klopeks, whose behaviour and habits are more than just a little kooky. But things go from kooky to downright sinister when local old boy Walter disappears, leading Ray and his buddies to suspect their new neighbours of killing and eating him! Sure, the Klopeks are a strange bunch what with their digging up the backyard in the middle of the night but they re not devil-worshipping cannibal killers... are they? Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2014

Blacula: The Complete Collection BD - Urban action and fatal attraction give rise to a groove from beyond the grave in this funkadelic, fangadelic Soul Cinema sensation! The eternally cool William Marshall puts a fresh spin on the age-old legend of the vampire, condemned to wander the earth with an insatiable lust for blood. Featuring Blacula and Scream, Blacula, Scream. In 1780, African Prince Mamuwalde (Marshall) pays a visit to Count Dracula in Transylvania, seeking his support in ending the slave trade. Instead, the evil count curses his noble guest and transforms him into a vampire! Released from his coffin nearly two centuries later by a pair of luckless decorators, Mamuwalde emerges as Blacula, one cool, dressed to kill, dude strollin the streets of L.A. on a nightly quest for human blood and fine women! Blu-ray Release date: October 27th, 2011

Norte, The End of History BD - In this reimagining of Crime and Punishment, set in the northern Philippine province of Luzon, Fabian, a law-school drop-out, frustrated with his country's never-ending cycle of betrayal and apathy, commits a horrific double murder; a gentle family man, Joaquin, takes the blame and receives a life sentence, leaving behind his wife Eliza and two children, whilst Fabian roams free, and is taken over by evil. Joaquin is a simple man who finds life in prison more tolerable when something mysterious and strange starts happening to him. Blu-ray Release date: September 29th, 2014

A Farewell to Arms BD - Not only the best film version of a Hemingway novel, but also one of the most thrilling visions of the power of sexual love that even Borzage ever made. An American ambulanceman, serving in Italy in World War I, falls in love with an English nurse; he finally goes AWOL to rejoin her, only to find her carrying his child and dying of hunger and loneliness. No other director got performances like these: Cooper at his youngest and sexiest, moving from drunkenness to intoxication; moon-faced Hayes, at once a mother-figure and a lover; and Menjou as Cooper's repressed homosexual friend, jealously coming between the lovers. And no other director created images like these, using light and movement like brushstrokes, integrating naturalism and a daring expressionism in the same shot. This is romantic melodrama raised to its highest degree, fittingly set to the music of Wagner's 'Liebestod'. BFI Blu-ray Release Date: September 22nd, 2014

Brute Force BD - As hard-hitting as its title, Brute Force was the first of Jules Dassin’s forays into the crime genre, a prison melodrama that takes a critical look at American society as well. Burt Lancaster is the timeworn Joe Collins, who, along with his fellow inmates, lives under the heavy thumb of the sadistic, power-tripping guard Captain Munsey (a riveting Hume Cronyn). Only Collins’s dreams of escape keep him going, but how can he possibly bust out of Munsey’s chains? Matter-of-fact and ferocious, Brute Force builds to an explosive climax that shows the lengths men will go to when fighting for their freedom. Blu-ray Release Date: September 15th, 2014

Sundays and Cybele BD - In this provocative Academy Award winner from French director Serge Bourguignon, a psychologically damaged war veteran and a neglected child begin a startlingly intimate friendship—one that ultimately ignites the suspicion and anger of his friends and neighbors in suburban Paris. Bourguignon’s film makes thoughtful, humane drama out of potentially incendiary subject matter, and with the help of the sensitive cinematography of Henri Decaë and a delicate score by Maurice Jarre, Sundays and Cybèle becomes a stirring contemplation of an alliance between two troubled souls. Blu-ray Release date: September 30th, 2014

Goto, Isle of Love BD - Walerian Borowczyk's second feature was just as original as his first. Almost entirely live action this time, it is situated on the archipelago of Goto, which has been cut off from the rest of human civilisation by a massive earthquake and has consequently developed its own arcane rules. Melancholic dictator Goto III (Pierre Brasseur) is married to the beautiful Glossia (Ligia Branice), who in turn is lusted after by the petty thief Gozo (Guy Saint-Jean) as he works his way up the hierarchy. Its thinly veiled critique of totalitarianism saw it banned in both Communist Poland and Fascist Spain (to Borowczyk s delight), but the film is most notable for its uniquely original atmosphere, in which bizarre props and sets (designed by Borowczyk himself) are given as much weight as the human actors. Its grave beauty is underscored to perfection by one of Handel s organ concertos. Blu-ray Release Date: September 8th, 2014

Stage Struck - The young women come to New York with a suitcase and a dream, determined to make it on the heartbreak street called Broadway. Many of them, as this cautionary noir points out, fall prey to career predators. Stage Struck zeroes in on the murder of one hopeful and of two overlapping investigations to catch the killer: one by persistent police detectives; the other by the victim's intrepid sister who poses as a footlight hopeful, signs on with the same talent agency her sibling used and infiltrates the dead girl's bright but illusory world. Conrad Nagle, a silent-era leading man who starred opposite Greta Garbo in The Mysterious Lady, and Ralph Byrd, who played firm-jawed Dick Tracy in films and in a TV series, portray the detectives. Audrey Long, who brings a welcome but perhaps unexpected sophisticated air to her portrayal of the victim's sister, was the longtime wife of Leslie Charteris, creator of the suave crime solver The Saint. DVD Release Date: July 22nd, 2014

A Jester's Tale - The legendary, visionary Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman has been a profound influence on whole generations of filmmakers from Jan Svankmajer to Tim Burton, the Quay Brothers to Terry Gilliam. His ground-breaking innovations in the use of live-action and animation mark him as one of the great masters of 20th Century fantasy cinema. A JESTER'S TALE is one of his most renowned and celebrated achievments. Described by Zeman as a "pseudo-historical" film, it is a bold anti-war black comedy following the adventures of a plowboy and a mercenary, press-ganged into service on the battlefields of the Thirty Years War of 1618 - 1648. DVD Release Date: September 15th, 2014

Refuge - This heartwarming romance finds Amy as a young woman raising her two, slightly younger, but overly needy siblings. Amy has to balance her personal life with her responsibilities. But when Sam, a young handsome stranger rolls into town, he becomes entrenched in the family while he and Amy, against all odds, begin to create a life they never thought possible.
