ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Pretty easy top pick this week. Masters of Cinema's Early Murnau - Five Films will contend for Blu-ray of the year. A brilliant, must-own, Blu-ray package. Arrow keeps up their diligent work with the Woody Allen: Six Films - 1971-1978 and we reviewed three more Blu-ray titles from that boxset - Bananas - an homage to his beloved Marx Brothers, Sleeper - Buster Keaton?, and Interiors - Ingmar Bergman, of course. We've compared two Kino Blu-ray releases; Richard Brooks' Deadline U.S.A. with Humphrey Bogart offers an Eddie Muller commentary and William A. Wellman's fabulous western Yellow Sky, with Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter and Richard Widmark, also gets a Blu-ray transfer and commentary included! Shout! Factory does a stellar new Blu-ray set of Brian De Palma's Raising Cain including both the theatrical and, reordered, director's cut with many new extras. Arrow do an Ozploitation classic to Region FREE Blu-ray with Brian Trenchard-Smith's Dead End Drive-In - set in a near-future where the economy has crumbled and violent gangs play havoc in the streets. Panamint bring us Edwin L. Marin's Abilene Town to Blu-ray - a solid 40's western. Unfortunately Artificial Eye's Blu-ray of Andrei Tarkovsky Nostalgia is visually underwhelming visually with some digitization but the solid clunker of the week is, one of my favorite films, Edmund Goulding's Noir essential Nightmare Alley - but the Spanish Blu-ray is one of the worst ever produced. Pass. No DVDs this newsletter - but we will return with SD reviews next week!:

“She looked hot enough to catch fire, but too lazy to do anything but just lie there and smoke.”

Have an invigorating week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Yellow Sky BD - Wellman (The Ox-Bow Incident) helms this gem involving of a band of outlaws, led by strong quiet James 'Stretch' Dawson (Gregory Peck), who find themselves knocking at death's door after becoming lost in the treacherous western Badlands. Their only salvation is a lonesome town called Yellow Sky, where the inhabitants consist of a doddering old prospector (James Barton) and his mysterious, alluring daughter (Anne Baxter). But their deliverance from danger is short-lived when the gang discovers a fateful secret hidden within the dusty, rotting walls of this ghost town... GOLD! A perfectly cast genre pearl that seems to have been all but forgotten. Kino Blu-ray Release Date: July 12th, 2016

Raising Cain BD - From master of terror Brian De Palma comes this stylish psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final frame. Carter Nix (Lithgow) is a respected psychologist, loving husband and devoted father who decides to take a year off to help raise his daughter. Carter’s wife Jenny is pleased to have her attentive husband home: at first. When Carter shows obsessive behavior toward their daughter, Jenny becomes concerned, and to complicate matters, Jenny’s old flame re-enters her life. But nothing can prepare her for the emergence of Carter’s multiple personalities, and a fiendish plot to recreate the infamous experiments of his deranged father. Blu-ray Release Date: September 13th, 2016

Bananas BD - Gag for gag and one-liner for one-liner, Woody Allen's second feature is one of the funniest that he ever made, satirising everything from relationships to dictatorships in the vein of his beloved Marx Brothers. There s some pointed political satire for those minded to look for it, but surreal whimsy rapidly takes over as San Marcos s new official language is deemed to be Swedish and J. Edgar Hoover disguises himself as a large black woman for the purposes of one of the maddest courtroom showdowns ever filmed. Blu-ray Release date: November 14th, 2016

Deadline U.S.A. BD - An abundance of subplots are expertly woven together by screenwriter/director Richard Brooks in Deadline - USA. Humphrey Bogart stars as crusading editor Ed Hutcheson, whose newspaper is on the verge of closing thanks to the machinations of the mercenary daughter (Audrey Christie) of Mrs. Garrison (Ethel Barrymore), the paper's owner. Though he and his staff will all be out of work within a few days, Hutcheson intends to go out with a bang, exposing the criminal activities of "untouchable" gang boss Rienzi (Martin Gabel). Despite numerous disappointments and setbacks, Hutcheson achieves a pyrrhic victory as the film draws to a close. Throughout the story, the many pressures brought to bear upon a big-city newspaper--political, commercial, etc.--are realistically detailed, as is the relationship between Hutcheson and his ex-wife Nora (Kim Hunter). Kino Blu-ray Release date: July 26th, 2016

Nightmare Alley BD - Tyrone Power, cast against type — at his own insistence — gives the performance of his lifetime as handsome scumbag / carnival barker / con-man Stanton Carlisle. He seduces fellow sideshow artiste Mademoiselle Zeena (Joan Blondell) to learn the secret of the once-lucrative mind-reading act she performed with her alcoholic husband (Ian Keith). Carlisle, a "born mentalist", secures the secret method and sets off with his new carnie wife, Molly (Coleen Grey) to milk the bigtime as a spiritualist in Chicago. As Carlisle's success grows, it's only a matter of time before his greed — and twisted involvement with femme fatale psychoanalyst Lilith Ritter (Helen Walker) — bring his world crashing down around him. Blu-ray Release Date: July 12th, 2016

Interiors BD - When Eve (Geraldine Page), an interior designer, is deserted by her husband of many years, Arthur (E.G. Marshall), the emotionally glacial relationships of the three grown-up daughters are laid bare. Twisted by jealousy, insecurity and resentment, Renata (Diane Keaton), a successful writer; Flyn (Kristin Griffith), a woman crippled by indecision; and Joey (Marybeth Hurt), a budding actress; struggle to communicate for the sake of their shattered mother. But when their father unexpectedly falls for another woman (Maureen Stapleton), his decision to remarry sets in motion a terrible twist of fate... Blu-ray Release date: November 14th, 2016

Abilene Town BD - Since the conversion to law and order of practically every lawless hamlet in the Old West now is in Hollywood's archives, it was but a matter of time before Abilene's lusty story was considered cinematically. And, in "Abilene Town," which came to the Globe on Saturday, Jules Levey, the producer, has fixed his camera sights on that Kansas crossroads and has come up with a Western that may or may not be history but that certainly should satisfy lovers of that genre. True, it is basically horse opera in which the music isn't stinted, but it is turned out with flavor and pace, and the shooting and fighting are unrestrained. Blu-ray Release date: September, 2016

Sleeper BD - In Sleeper Woody Allen satirizes seventies dystopianism whilst resurrecting the slapstick comedy of the silent era, if Interiors was Allen's Bergman film, and Stardust Memories his Fellini film, then Sleeper could be thought of as his Buster Keaton film. After a hospital mishap puts health-food shop owner Miles Monroe (Woody Allen) in a coma, he wakes up 200 years later to find himself in a very different and not exactly brave new world. All women are frigid, all men are impotent, and everyone lives in a police state run by a mysterious leader who hasn't been seen in months. But why? Blu-ray Release date: October 3rd, 2016

Early Murnau - Five Films BD - In the sinister mystery Schloß Vogelöd, terrible secrets from the past threaten a group of aristocrats' gathering at a country manor. In the delirious Phantom, an aspiring poet's chance encounter with a beautiful woman leads into obsession and deception. The delightful Die Finanzen des Großherzogs sees a rakish-but-impoverished duke setting out to rebuild his fortune via blissfully comic high adventure on the Mediterranean coast. In Der Letzte Mann, one of the undisputed masterpieces of the silent era, Emil Jannings gives an overwhelming performance as a hotel porter with dreams of a higher station in life, and was a stylistic breakthrough for both Murnau and cinema in general. Finally, the slyly satiric Tartuffe features Jannings as Moličre's iconic creation in a morality tale film-within-a-film as only Murnau could conceive. Blu-ray Release Date: September 26th, 2016

Dead End Drive-In BD - One of Quentin Tarantino's favourite directors, Brian Trenchard-Smith was a key figure in the Ozploitation movement, responsible for The Man from Hong Kong, Stunt Rock, Turkey Shoot, BMX Bandits... and dystopian cult classic Dead-End Drive In! Set in a near-future where the economy has crumbled and violent gangs play havoc in the streets, the powers-that-be have decided to lure the delinquent youth into drive-in cinemas and keep them there. No longer just a place to watch trashy movies and make out, these outdoor picture shows have become concentration camps for the unruly and unwanted. Blu-ray Release Date: September 20th, 2016

Nostalgia BD - The dark, permanently wet setting, reminiscent of Stalker and The Mirror, supplants the typical Tarkovsky reticence with some unique metaphysical allusions. The slow-moving camerawork may rend some scenes infuriating but the mystic beauty which emanates from the film - sequences like the one where the madman is burned in a square under the sounds of Beethoven's ninth symphony - gives Nostalgia an awe-inspiring, even disturbing vision of man's struggle for true faith.
