ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): We get our reviewing numbers modest - but enjoyed almost everything we saw. BFI's Region 'B' Blu-ray of Bernardo Bertolucci's Before the Revolution is certainly deserved of a strong mention, as is their Region FREE 1080P transfer of Jerzy Skolimowski's 40-year old Deep End but I'd probably say my favorite presentation of the week was the MGM Blu-ray of William Wyler's classic western The Big Country! I was floored by Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives but the Strand Releasing Blu-ray rendering is very sub-par. I'm definitely going to compare to the UK edition. many had their first exposure to Sean Penn via Fast Times at Ridgemont High - a superior social comedy that look impressive in the new format. John Carpenter returns with the creepy thriller The Ward - in short, it looked and sounded okay and entertained. The disappointment of the week was the German Blu-ray of The Last Man on Earth from the frequently repeated Richard Matheson story. The film still has its charm but the transfer is fraught with errors - most notably an out-of-sync audio track. DVD had some greatness with Ingmar Bergman's emotionally draining Face to Face - finally available in NTSC plus Gregory did a comparison of the essential Noir but horrendously bad SD transfers of Trapped. Eric covered two DVDs in the horror Closed For the Season and the sexual grinder Marcy.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Big Country BD - In this, a return to westerns for the veteran director, he takes the testosterone out, and leaves in the unassuming protagonist. Returning home sea captain, James McKay (Gregory Peck), looks out-of-place as seen by the seasoned Texans of the open west. He seeks his lot with fiancée (Carroll Baker) yet all think he is a nancy-boy - unable, and unworthy. Future father-in-law and land baron (Charles Bickford) feuds with similar cattleman (Burl Ives) over the water for their cows owned by school marm Julie Maragon (sexy Jean Simmons) - another character not given her deserved respect by the rough and rugged gun-toting, horsemen. Ives steals the show and wins the Oscar, as does the soundtrack. Chuck Connors and Charlton Heston lead the respective gangs. Blu-ray Release Date: June 10th, 2011

Deep End BD - The Swinging Sixties are over and the long, grey morning after has only just begun. But there are still eye-opening new experiences in store for wet-behind-the-ears teenager Mike (John Moulder-Brown) when he takes a job at a rundown London swimming baths. After one of its more mature visitors steamily attempts to take advantage (Diana Dors, in a superb cameo), he gradually wises up to find himself adrift with an increasingly obsessive interest in sassy, self-assured, co-worker Susan (played by a seductive Jane Asher). Giddily he follows her into the grimy underbelly of Soho for a long dark night of the soul -- soundtracked with great intensity by legendary Krautrock band Can. Will Mike sabotage Susan's relationship with her fiancé and get together with her instead?
Blu-ray Release date: July 18th, 2011

Before the Revolution BD - A rarely seen early work from one of world cinema s most acclaimed directors, Bernardo Bertolucci s beautiful and unique Before the Revolution - made when he was just 22 captures the passions and ideology of the 1960s. Young, idealistic and bourgeois, Fabrizio struggles to come to terms with these contradictions and master a transgressive love for his aunt. Part autobiography, part literary adaptation, part homage to the French new-wave and Italian neo-realists that inspired him, Bertolucci s virtuosic second film is an atmospheric, ambiguous portrait of idealistic youth.
Blu-ray Release date: August 22nd, 2011

The Ward BD - Acclaimed director John Carpenter makes his long awaited return to the screen with a thriller about a young woman in a 1960s mental institution who becomes terrorized by malevolent unseen forces. Kristen, a beautiful but troubled young woman, finds herself bruised, cut, drugged with laughing gas. The other patients in the ward four equally disturbed young women offer no answers, and Kristen quickly realizes things are not as they seem. The air is heavy with secrets, and at night, when the hospital is dark and foreboding, she hears strange and frightening sounds. It appears they are not alone. One-by-one, the other girls begin to disappear and Kristen must find a way out of this hellish place before she, too, becomes a victim. As she struggles to escape, she will uncover a truth far more dangerous and horrifying than anyone could have imagined.
Blu-ray Release date: August 16th, 2011

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives BD - Winner of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives is a unique tale of a man embracing life's greatest mystery. Choosing to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the countryside, Boonmee is visited by his dead wife (a ghost) and his lost son (an strange hairy beast with red glowing eyes) who come to guide him to his final resting place, a cave where his first soul began. With a wry sense of humor and a humanist spirit, Uncle Boonmee, one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, is a magical tale of reincarnation, karma and nature.
Blu-ray Release date: July 12th, 2011

Face to Face - Ingmar Bergman's gut-wrenching drama stars Liv Ullmann (Cries and Whispers) as a successful psychiatrist who, despite her professional prowess, suffers from profound depression and mental illness. She finds herself teetering on the brink of a nervous breakdown, haunted by disturbing images and emotions from her past. Desperately in search of a escape from her doldrums, she has an affair with fellow doctor Tomas Jacobi (Erland Josephson, The Sacrifice). This only worsens her hysteria as she struggles to maintain her grasp on sanity and reality. Ullmann's devastating performance earned her multiple awards including a Golden Globe nomination and an Oscar® nomination*. Writer, Producer and Director Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal) was also nominated* for a Best Director Academy Award. DVD Release Date: August 30th, 2011

Trapped - Convicted counterfeiter Tris Stewart (Lloyd Bridges - Three Steps North, The Limping Man) is offered early release from prison in return for helping the US Treasury Agents track down his former partners-in-crime. Unwilling to cooperate, Stewart manages to escape, unwittingly playing straight into the T-Men s hands. Directed with style and a documentary feel by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings, 10 Rillington Place), no-one is quite what they seem! Trapped is superbly lit, with crisp, intelligent dialogue a top notch Film Noir with an explosive ending. Glass Key DVD Release Date: April 6th, 2009

The Last Man on Earth BD - A mysterious bacterium has swept over the world and left everyone dead except for epidemiologist Morgan (Price), who picked up an immunity to the germ years before while working in South America. Unfortunately for him, the dead rise at night to become shuffling vampire/zombies bent on eating him alive. By day, his routine involves shopping for garlic and mirrors to repel the undead and grid-searching the town block by block to exterminate them with the dependable wooden-stake method. He piles the corpses in his station wagon and takes them to the local landfill where he makes a bonfire out of them; by night, he returns home to play old records and ignore the ghoulish goons outside his door.
Blu-ray Release Date: July 29th, 2011

Marcy - Marcy Wiggins' (Uta Erickson, THE ULTIMATE DEGENERATE) playful relationship with live-in companion June Rutland (Sheila Britt, THE LUSTING HOURS) sparks rumors of lesbianism at the neighboring farm of her childhood sweetheart Dalton Christie (Nick Dundas, THE SEX CYCLE). Dalton's wife Sharon (Barbara Lance, THE ODD TRIANGLE) is particularly pleased since she has been jealous of Marcy and Dalton's past relationship, but her using the rumor to needle Dalton has the opposite effect and he seeks out Marcy to dispel the rumors (they are both wont to wander the hills between their neighboring farms for love of the land) and end up rekindling their relationship. June has not even considered a lesbian relationship with Marcy - in fact, she's been having fun with handyman Will Diehl (Alex Mann, SATAN WAS A LADY) - until Sharon and Dalton's housekeeper Carrie Sue (Linda Boyce, SHE CAME ON THE BUS) asks her what lesbians do (and June demonstrates it). DVD Release Date: April 19th, 2011

Closed For the Season - Kristy (Aimee Brooks, MONSTER MAN) goes for a drive one night and wakes up in an old car on the grounds of a now-abandoned amusement park she once frequented as a child (until a frightening encounter with a bear and a creepy carny). She is chased by the empty car, encounters a civil war ghost who used to hang his victims from the trees until they were reduced to bones, nearly crushed by a bulldozer (which then flattens its driver) and comes across a paralyzed man impaled on a full-grown tree. She eventually reaches the cabin of James (Damien Maffei, CHRISTMAS WITH THE DEAD) whose parents took over as caretakers of the park when their house burned down (after an attempt by James and his crippled friend Dyrk to burn down the park as kids). James tries to explain away Kristy's experiences as the result of a bump to the head, but the two soon find their attempts to get out of the park blocked by killer bears, the aforementioned killer car, forties gangsters, a lake monster, evil doubles, visions of each others gory deaths, and the specter of the carny (Joe Unger, Kurt Russell's criminal cohort in the snipped opening of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK) who once scared Kristy and threw James' friend Dyrk (Will Waters) off the roller coast and paralyzed him, or did he...
