ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Not too much to impart - Terrence Malick's The New World is a revelation on Criterion's new 4K restoration of the extended cut. It includes three versions on three separate Blu-rays plus many new extras. Magnificent package. There are reasons to be very pleased with Artificial Eye's Blu-ray of Andrei Tarkovsky's Ivan's Childhood - it looks and sounds great plus supplements - and bodes well for their future planned Russian director's films to Blu-ray. Eureka bring us Ron Howard's Cocoon - more science-fiction than schmaltzy geriatric - and it's the definitive transfer of the film to Blu-ray. Gregory exposes the weakness of the DVD of Noir essential Fear (1946) by a company called grapevine and Eric covered quite a lot this week including a comparisons of the Rock Hudson, Anne Baxter film One Desire, the interesting 2014 film Margarita With a Straw, Lana Turner in The Lady Takes a Flyer, Dorothy Lamour in Masquerade in Mexico and Bing Crosby in Here Comes the Waves.

"I haven't been afraid since I've known you." - Gaslight (1944)

Despite all the rhetoric our future is golden! - see you next week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Cocoon BD - Director Ron Howard followed up the huge success of Splash with this light-hearted science-fiction tale about a group of elderly friends who find their youth returning after encountering a benevolent Alien species living next door to their retirement home. Bucking the trend of extravagant special effects targeted at a teenage audience, Cocoon with its senior cast and more personal focus was a huge success, picking up two Academy Awards (Best Supporting Actor & Best Visual Effects), and remains one of the most memorable and heart-warming films of the Eighties. Eureka Blu-ray Release date: July 18th, 2016

The New World BD - It is so refreshing to see such poetic images that can speak luminous volumes in a modern epically proportioned film. Based on the classic Pocahontas and John Smith legend, director Terrence Malick scripted this penetrating drama of conflict between Native Americans and English settlers in the 17th century 'New World'. The heart of each film in Malick's sporadic oeuvre (a twenty year break between his second and third films - Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line) must be cinematography. This is shot in Virginia by Emmanuel Lubezki, and continually overwhelms us with beauty, wild detail and washes us clean like a breath of mountain air. With organic precision Malick crafts films that can only be his own - a fervent pioneer in a profession spilling over with copycats. An elegant visionary peeling away contemptible overused ploys and centering his cast, crew and lenses on adventure, romance with the grace of your senses. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: July 26th, 2016

Ivan's Childhood BD - The debut feature from the great Andrei Tarkovsky, Ivan’s Childhood is an evocative, poetic journey through the shadows and shards of one boy’s war-torn youth. Moving back and forth between the traumatic realities of WWII and the serene moments of family life before the conflict began, Tarkovsky’s film remains one of the most jarring and unforgettable depictions of the impact of violence on children in wartime. Artificial Eye Blu-ray Release Date: June 27th, 2016

One Desire - Circa 1900, runaway boy Nugget arrives in an Oklahoma boom town to find his brother...who's a dealer in the casino section of a palatial bawdy house, and lover of the madam, Tacey Cromwell. Together, Nugget, Clint, and Tacey seek respectability in a Colorado mining town. Clint finds work at the town's new bank, while Tacey adopts another orphan, Seely. But Clint is pursued by banker's daughter Judith Watrous, who's seemingly sweet but takes ruthless steps to eliminate competition. Result for Tacey: heartbreak, renunciation, and tears a-plenty. Simply Media DVD Release Date: July 4th, 2016

Masquerade in Mexico - The Technicolor musical Masquerade in Mexico is Mitchell Leisen's remake of his own Midnight. Stranded in Mexico City without a dime, glamorous Angel O'Reilly (Dorothy Lamour) is rescued by wealthy Thomas Grant (Patric Knowles). But Grant's motivations are anything but altrustic. In order to get his wife Helen's (Ann Dvorak) mind off handsome bullfighter Manolo Segovia (Arturo de Cordova), Grant passes Angel off as a Contessa at a weekend party, reasoning that Segovia will switch his attentions to our heroine. Screenwriter Karl Tunberg has added a jewel-theft angle to the original Edwin Justis Mayer/Franz Spencer story, which improves things not at all. Masquerade in Mexico is admittedly a handsomer production than Midnight, but the remake lacks the sparkle of the original film's stars Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche, John Barrymore, Francis Lederer, Mary Astor et. al DVD Release Date: July 4th, 2016

Fear (1946) - In Fear, a medical student (Peter Cookson) is on the brink of abandoning school because his money has run out; in frustration, he murders a professor who moonlights as a pawnbroker. Questioned by the police, he ill-advisedly spouts warmed-over Nietzsche like the effete killers in Hitchcock's Rope. Then, out of the blue, a scholarly periodical to which he submitted an article sends him a check for $1000 (!) -- the most implausible occurrence in the entire noir cycle. He grows more reckless, and suspicion continues to grow... DVD Release Date: July 7th, 2015

Margarita With a Straw - An honest, sensitive portrait of disability and the sexual awakening of an adventurous young woman. A luminous Indian teenager with cerebral palsy leaves her homeland to study in New York, falls in love with a young blind woman, and begins a remarkable journey to self-discovery and independence. DVD Release Date: June 28th. 2016

The Lady Takes a Flyer - According to Universal-International publicity, The Lady Takes a Flyer is partially based on fact. The "lady" is Maggie Colby (Lana Turner) and the "flyer" is former Air Force colonel Mike Dandridge (Jeff Chandler). The two form a partnership when Mike decides to inaugurate an air-ferry service with Maggie as his chief pilot. Mike's wartime buddy Al Reynolds (Richard Denning) also signs on with the new service, though Al's hopes for a romance with Maggie are dashed when she marries Mike. Trouble arises when Maggie becomes pregnant and Mike insists that she give up her perilous lifestyle and become just another housewife. All conflicts are resolved during an exciting finale, wherein a fogbound Maggie is guided across the Atlantic via the radioed instructions of her loving husband. DVD Release Date: June 5th, 2016

Here Comes the Waves - This peppy wartime musical stars Bing Crosby as radio crooner Johnny Cabot, the heartthrob of millions. To escape his frenzied fans, Johnny joins the Navy, where is he ordering to aid a WAVE recruiting drive. He is helped(?) in this endeavor by Betty Hutton, amusingly cast in a dual role as twin sisters Susie and Rosemary, one a shy retiring brunette, the other a bold and brassy blonde (Vera Marshe doubles for Hutton is some scenes). Part of Johnny's recruiting strategy is to stage a musical show, as good an excuse as any for a steady stream of bouncy musical numbers. This is the film in which Bing Crosby and Sonny Tufts, both in blackface, introduce the Johnny Mercer-Harold Arlen standard "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive." Sharp-eyed viewers will spot Yvonne de Carlo, Mona Freeman, Mae Clarke, and Noel "Lois Lane" Neill in small roles. Here Come the Waves was partially remade by Martin & Lewis as Sailor Beware.
