ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): What a glorious week with so many amazing films on Blu-ray including two of my favorite of all time. Antonioni's L'Eclisse is an incomparable masterpiece and having it come to Criterion Blu-ray is a cinephile dream. Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows also gets the Criterion treatment in another amazing package. On the other side of the pond Arrow are releasing their own awesome Blu-rays - and Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels certainly falls in that category. In a word: 'Magnificent'. A lesser seen classic is the Tomorrow - now on Blu-ray. A poignant tale based on a short story by William Faulkner and starring Robert Duvall in one of his best roles. I continue to be enamored with Take Shelter - "Gorgeous transfer for a sublime film!". Good to get Coppola's The Outsiders, 2005 'Complete Novel Edition' on Blu-ray stacked with supplements. I enjoyed seeing Alain Robbe-Grillet's The Man Who Lies reach 1080P along with the director's even artsy'er Eden and After - looking very film-like on the Blu-ray format. The soft-core sexy, Harlequinesque romance, Two Moon Junction gets a Blu-ray release with a posing Sherilyn Fenn in her birthday suit. Pete Walker fans have two releases to look forward to with one of his classic horror's House of Mortal Sin coming soon to Blu-ray at the same time as the provocateur's treatise warning of the reproductions of statutory rape entitled Home Before Midnight. Riding the way of Apocalyptic fervor is Goodbye World - that seems to have potential but was lacking in vital areas. I was in the mood for Bushido Man and didn't appreciate the film much. On DVD Eric reviewed another small budget horror Lurking Fear, plus another entry into the genre; Camp Blood First Slaughter and a poorly received crime dframa Original Gangster. Have a tremendous week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

House of Mortal Sin BD - Jenny, (Susan Penhaligon) a troubled young girl, seeks help at her local church. Unfortunately for her, the sexually frustrated priest Father Meldrum (Anthony Sharp) she confesses to, becomes obsessed with her. He begins to stalk her, however as his increasingly unhinged mindset continues to unravel, it becomes obvious he will stop at nothing, including blackmail and murder, just to get close to Jenny. Blu-ray Release date: June 17th, 2014

Home Before Midnight BD - The rock music business... Money, Fame, Girls... and whole lot of trouble! This exploitationer from British low-budget specialist Pete Walker Frightmare, the Flesh and Blood Show tells of a songwriter for a rock band who is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl. Although he is innocent of the crime, he finds his life being destroyed by the girl's vengeful parents and a legal system that he believes gives him no rights at all. Blu-ray Release date: June 17th, 2014

Bushido Man BD - Eat and Fight. Upon returning from a pilgrimage across Japan, the warrior Toramaru arrives with tales of seven epic battles against Japan’s most legendary fighters. As Toramaru’s philosophy dictates that he ’know the enemy by eating his food, ’ each masterfully-choreographed fight is preceded by a helping of his prey’s favorite dish. Designated successor to Master Gensai and leading proponent of the all-round martial-arts discipline, The Cosmic Way, Toramaru tells the tales of The Seven Deadly Battles as Master Gensai eagerly listens to the lavish and violent details of Toramaru’s adventures! Blu-ray Release date: June 10th, 2014

Tomorrow BD - Horton Foote was the adapting hand behind this superlative black and white filmization of the 1939 William Faulkner story Tomorrow. Framed in flashback, the film explores the personal reasons that semi-literate farmer Robert Duvall is the lone jury holdout in the guilty verdict for a young killer on trial. We learn in a gradually unfolding fashion that the boy is the son of Olga Bellin, a woman with whom Duvall had had an intense personal involvement some twenty years earlier. Foote's script had previously been utilized on a Playhouse 90 TV version of Tomorrow, which starred Sterling Hayden. Universally regarded as the best-ever film adaptation of a Faulkner work, Tomorrow was in danger of vanishing without truly finding its audience, when it was given a well received TV premiere on PBS on December 17, 1984--twelve years after the film was made. Blu-ray Release date: May, 2014

Sullivan's Travels BD - This masterpiece by Preston Sturges is perhaps the finest movie-about-a-movie ever made. Hollywood director Joel McCrea, tired of churning out lightweight comedies, decides to make O Brother, Where Art Thou—a serious, socially responsible film about human suffering. After his producers point out that he knows nothing of hardship, he hits the road as a hobo. He finds the lovely Veronica Lake—and more trouble than he ever dreamed of. Blu-ray Release Date: May 26th, 2014

Two Moon Junction BD - April (Sherilyn Fenn) is the daughter of a powerful senator to a Southern state of America. She is also just about to marry Chad (Martin Hewitt). When Chad has to go on a trip, and her family go on a short holiday, April begins a steamy affair with a local carnival worker (Richard Tyson). However, unbeknownst to her, April's rich grandmother has conspired with the local sheriff to keep an eye on her and he has a few stories to tell at the wedding... Blu-ray Release Date: May 19th, 2014

The Outsiders BD - Teen rivalry in a small Southern town sets the stage for this dramatic interpretation of the novel by S.E. Hinton. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Outsiders tells the story of the ongoing conflict between the Greasers and the Socs in rural Oklahoma. C. Thomas Howell stars as Ponyboy, the youngest of three orphaned boys who pal around with the local hoods known as the Greasers. When Ponyboy and his friend Ralph Macchio get into a deadly confrontation one night, the two go on the run from the cops, and they grow up quickly and soon realize the insignificance of their petty posturing. Matt Dillon stars as the tough-as-nails leader of their group and Patrick Swayze appears as Ponyboy's oldest brother. Blu-ray Release date: June 3rd, 2014

Eden and After BD - From the darkly erotic imagination of Alain Robbe-Grillet comes a dreamlike fable in which a group of decadent French students are drawn into the psychological and sexual games of a mysterious Dutchman (Pierre Zimmer). Once they imbibe his "fear powder," the students experience a series of hallucinatory episodes: ruminations on death, explorations of sexual curiosity, and striking tableaux of sadomasochistic fantasy. This special edition includes an interview with writer/director Robbe-Grillet, and a complete alternate cut of the film, entitled N. THROWS THE DICE. Blu-ray Release Date: May 27th, 2014

The Man Who Lies BD - On the run from pursuing soldiers, Boris (Jean-Louis Trintignant) finds a refuge in a small European town which, years before, was home to Jean, a resistance fighter hunted by the Nazis. Boris ingratiates himself in the community, weaving tales of his encounters with the martyred rebel, and thereby seducing Jean's widow.. and sister… and maid. But Boris's erotic games are interrupted when a mysterious stranger -- who may, in fact, be Jean -- arrives in the village. Blu-ray Release Date: May 27th, 2014

Goodbye World BD - A major cyber-attack cripples the U.S, prompting estranged friends to gather at an off-the-grid home in an attempt to escape rising social unrest in this apocalyptic thriller. Years ago, James (Adrian Grenier) sensed that society was on the verge of collapse. In a bid to be proactive, he moved his family, including his wife Lily (Kerry Bishe) and their young daughter, to a secluded Northern California home. There, thanks to solar panels that power their home and fertile gardens to provide sustenance, James and his family learn to become self sufficient. Then one day, seemingly out of nowhere, a viral text message with the subject "Goodbye World" attacks utility services, plunging the entire country into darkness. Blu-ray Release date: June 3rd, 2014

All That Heaven Allows BD - This heartbreakingly beautiful indictment of 1950s American mores by Douglas Sirk follows the blossoming love between a well-off widow (Jane Wyman) and her handsome and earthy younger gardener (Rock Hudson). When their romance prompts the scorn of her children and country club friends, she must decide whether to pursue her own happiness or carry on a lonely, hemmed-in existence for the sake of the approval of others. With the help of ace cinematographer Russell Metty, Sirk imbues nearly every shot with a vivid and distinct emotional tenor. A profoundly felt film about class and conformity in small-town America, All That Heaven Allows is a pinnacle of expressionistic Hollywood melodrama. Blu-ray Release Date: June 10th, 2014

L'Eclisse BD - The conclusion of Michelangelo Antonioni’s informal trilogy on modern malaise, which began with L’avventura, L’eclisse (The Eclipse) tells the story of a young woman (Monica Vitti) who leaves one lover (Francisco Rabal) only to drift into a relationship with another (Alain Delon). Using the architecture of Rome as a backdrop for the couple’s doomed affair, Antonioni reaches the apotheosis of his modernist style, returning to his favorite themes: alienation and the difficulty of finding connections in an increasingly mechanized world. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: June 10th, 2014

Take Shelter BD - When Curtis (Michael Shannon) begins having nightmares of an encroaching, apocalyptic storm, he refrains from telling his wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain). To protect her and their six-year-old deaf daughter Hannah, Curtis starts focusing his anxiety and money into the obsessive building of a storm shelter. While Hannah's healthcare and special needs education has resulted in financial struggle, Curtis' seemingly inexplicable behavior concerns Samantha and provokes intolerance among co-workers, friends and neighbors. However, the resulting strain on his marriage and tension within the community doesn't compare to Curtis' private fear of what his disturbing dreams may truly signify. Blu-ray Release date: February 14th, 2012

Lurking Fear - JOHN MARTENSE (Blake Bailey) has just been released from prison after serving five years for a crime he didn't commit. John wants to stay as far away from the wrong side of the law as he can ... but family ties won't let him. John gets a message to see SPECS (Vincent Schiavelli), an old friend and undertaker with a taste for larceny. Specs gives John a map of a cemetery where a corpse stuffed with a half a million dollars has been buried. John's father stole the money with his psychotic partner BENNETT (Jon Finch) but hid the body, leaving it as a family legacy for his son to dig up. John reluctantly takes off for Leffertt's Corners, a small town with a terrible secret. For years the Corners have been torn apart - the people devoured by a race of cannibalistic genetic freaks living in the tunnels below the cemetery. DVD Release Date: May 19th, 2014

Camp Blood First Slaughter - The infamous Camp Blood is open for business! A college assignment sends a group of young students deep into the woods, and deeper into terror. One by one, a masked killer begins to murder them in gruesome fashion. They say the 3rd time is the charm, and Camp Blood 3 has thrice the slice! Stay out of the woods unless you want to be the next victim of the Camp Blood killer. DVD Release Date: May 20th, 2014

Original Gangster - Dave Courtney gives an unforgettable performance as Dave Bishop, one of the most murderous gangsters ever depicted on film, in this bloody crime epic. Through flashbacks, ORIGINAL GANGSTER follows the violent career of a small-time London villain who kills his way to the top of Britain's illicit drugs empire. Now happily retired on the Kent coast Dave becomes embroiled in a bloody battle with Al Qaeda terrorists who want to take over his criminal empire. ORIGINAL GANGSTER lends brutal insight into Britain's gangland underworld and is set to rank alongside THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY as one of the United Kingdom's greatest ever gangster films.
