ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I enjoyed a lot of film presentations this week but I think I was most pleased with The Andromeda Strain - a region FREE Blu-ray out of Germany of Robert Wise's highly interesting science-fiction film. The simplistic beauty of Abbas Kiarostami's Like Someone in Love - Blu-ray by Criterion - is magnificent and an easy recommendation. There is still value in Samuel Fuller's The Big Red One Blu-ray package despite "The Reconstruction" only being offered in SD. The restoration of Chaplin Mutual Comedies now on Blu-ray - out of Europe - is a great deal. Theatre of Blood is a brilliantly made film and stacked Blu-ray package from Arrow in the UK. Broadway Danny Rose is, yet another, great Woody Allen film - transferred expertly to Blu-ray by the folks at Twilight Time. I really enjoyed The Evil of Frankenstein - more addictive Hammer horror on Blu-ray. And less-so, also with Peter Cushing, Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell and The Blood Beast Terror - both in 1080P. The wholesome family comedy Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation deserves an audience and the new Blu-ray is the best way to watch it. Death Occurred Last Night is a more polished effort in the Giallo-like crime dramas of the 70s. A solid region FREE Blu-ray from Raro. Up the Junction is an exceptional British drama - a worthy addition to any Blu-ray library. I loved the UPI 50's monster films and both The Monolith Monsters and The Mole People have made in to Blu-ray. The Cardinal is a long feature from Preminger but requires restoration and, unfortunately, looks quite poor on Blu-ray. Eric has reviewed three DVDs this week including the modernist-camp efforts Gila! and The Lost Empire and compared SD didscs of the 60's horror-mystery Black Torment... "Let the sunshine... Let the sunshine... the sun shine in..."

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Theatre of Blood BD - Lionheart, a veteran thespian who refuses to play anything other than Shakespeare. Piqued by a circle of critics, whom he feels were disrespectful in their notices and denied him his rightful Best Actor of the Year Award, he decides to murder them one by one in parodies of some of Shakespeare's grislier scenes. He's aided by his daughter Edwina (played by Diana Rigg, often in fake moustache and male drag) and a ghoulish company of dosshouse zombies. Blu-ray Release date: May 5th, 2014

The Mole People BD - A group of scientists discovered deep under the Earth a secret living civilization. The derived from the Sumerians albino people live according to the strict rules of their power-hungry high priest Elinu. The slave labor of albinos are fearsome mole people who are kept like animals. Blu-ray Release date: April 17th, 2014

The Big Red One BD - Samuel Fuller's valedictory war picture, The Big Red One follows the First Infantry Division from Africa to Europe during the years 1942 through 1945. Lee Marvin portrays the division sergeant; he's tough and experienced, to be sure, but he takes on his job with cool professionalism rather than Hollywood bravado. Based on Fuller's own experiences, the film is a loosely constructed series of anecdotes. Among them are an insane asylum under bombardment while the inmates applaud and a climactic vignette in which a very young concentration camp internee dies while a friendly soldier plays piggy-back with the boy. Blu-ray Release Date: May 6th, 2014

Like Someone in Love BD - Abbas Kiarostami has spent his incomparable career exploring the spaces that separate illusion from reality and the simulated from the authentic. At first, his extraordinary and sly Like Someone in Love, which finds the Iranian director in Tokyo, may appear to be among his most straightforward films. Yet with this simple story of the growing bond between a young student and part-time call girl and a grandfatherly client, Kiarostami has constructed an enigmatic but crystalline investigation of affection and desire as complex as his masterful Close-up and Certified Copy in its engagement with the workings of the mercurial human heart. Blu-ray Release Date: May 20th, 2014

Chaplin Mutual Comedies BD - The Mutual Film Corporation built Charles Chaplin his own studio and he entered a fruitful twelve-month period which he acknowledged to be one of the most inventive and liberating of his career. Chaplin had full control over casting, scripting and directing. This Blu-ray Collection contains all 12 of his Mutual Comedies. The resourceful and enduring character of the "The Tramp" is seen in the early years of his evolution. It is easy to see the painstaking detail Chaplin went to to produce these gems of cinema that we still hold with immense appeal value almost 100 years later. Blu-ray Release Date: February 28th, 2014

The Monolith Monsters BD - The original 'rocky horror': a Jack Arnold-originated, quite effective Universal sci-fi paranoia yarn featuring the alien-induced metamorphosis of men to stone, and a subsequent stampede of towering crystal structures across small-town America. Grant Williams (The Incredible Shrinking Man) is again dwarfed by his adversaries, though he plays the only possible hero: a geologist. Blu-ray Release date: March 28th, 2014

The Andromeda Strain BD - The "Andromeda Strain" is a deadly extraterrestrial virus. It is brought to Earth when a research satellite crashes near a tiny Arizona town. Everyone in the community dies within days, except for a baby and an "insulated" drunkard. Recruited from labs all over North America, doctors Charles Dutton (David Wayne), Jeremy Stone (Arthur Hill), Ruth Leavitt (Kate Reid), and Mark Hall (James Olson) don radiation suits and race against time to isolate and destroy the virus. The film is based on a novel by Michael Crichton. Blu-ray Release date: April 17th, 2014

Up the Junction BD - Based on Nell Dunn's iconic tale of life in London's swinging sixties, Up the Junction is a memorable slice of British cinema starring Suzy Kendall (Torso) as Polly and Dennis Waterman (TV's The Sweeney) as her hard-up boyfriend, Pete. The tale is of a bored, young party girl who decides to cast off her affluent Chelsea lifestyle to move to the industrialized ghetto of Battersea. In search of realism, Polly takes a factory job where she befriends sisters Rube (Adrienne Posta) and Sylvie (Maureen Lipman) and moves into a rundown apartment in the area. She soon discovers the seedier side of life in an impoverished world of crime, desperation and questionable morality-a side of life that everyone but Polly is desperately trying to leave behind. Blu-ray Release date: April 29th, 2014

Death Occurred Last Night BD - An astute mix of classic Italian crime and giallo, Duccio Tessari’s Death Occurred Last Night is a dark slow burning murder mystery. A mentally handicapped woman is kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery, sending her distressed father and a jaded police detective on the hunt for clues in Milan’s underworld. Tessari (THE BLOODSTAINED BUTTERFLY) keeps a tight rein on the action, focusing on the characters and their collective desire for justice and revenge. An unforgettable, disturbing and fascinating thriller. Blu-ray Release date: May 6th, 2014

Broadway Danny Rose BD - Broadway Danny Rose (1984), starring, written, and directed by Woody Allen, gives us a variation on his patented schlub character: this time, the eponymous good-hearted talent agent who represents not just the worst but the most pathetic acts in show business. Among these is Lou Canova (Nick Apollo Forte), a corny lounge singer saddled with a drinking problem and a temperamental mistress, Tina Vitale (Mia Farrow, in a terrific comic performance). When Lou asks Danny to be his beard with Tina, the wimpy agent suddenly finds himself dealing with the Mob—and with the feisty Tina, herself. Beautifully rendered in black-and-white by cinematographer Gordon Willis. Blu-ray Release date: April, 2014

The Cardinal BD - Tom Tryon plays the title role in this Otto Preminger version of the Henry Morton Robinson novel. In his matriculation from Monsignor to the College of Cardinals, Stephen Fermoyle (Tom Tryon) must undergo several grueling life experiences: standing up to bigots in Georgia, defying Nazis in Austria, and so on. The film boasts cameo appearances by Dorothy Gish, Cecil Kellaway, John Saxon, John Huston, Robert Morse, Burgess Meredith, Raf Vallone, Ossie Davis. Incidentally, Tryon eventually quit acting and became a popular novelist. Blu-ray Release date: September 12th, 2013

The Evil of Frankenstein BD - In the opening to this particular outing, Frankenstein, and his faithful assistant Hans (Sandor Eles, Surviving Picasso), purchase a corpse in order to revivify the still warm heart; they are successful but the local priest interrupts their experiments and destructively sets about their equipment. Frankenstein rails against the continual interference that hampers his work. Seriously skint, the Baron proposes that the pair return to his family seat at Karlstaad, scene of his original experiments, where the family home will supply them with artefacts to sell to fund further research. Hans points out that the Baron has told him he would never be able to return to Karlstaad because of earlier events, but with typical arrogance Frankenstein reassures him that if they are careful any unpleasantness will be avoided. Blu-ray Release date: August 26th, 2013

Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell BD - The finale to Hammer's Frankenstein cycle features a young Doctor who is interned in the asylum where Baron Frankenstein supposedly perished after being found experimenting on stolen corpses. In the asylum he meets the mysterious Doctor Victor (Peter Cushing), and gradually comes to realize that Frankenstein is alive and well and continuing his work. Blu-ray Release date: June 18th, 2013

The Blood Beast Terror BD - Peter Cushing (Star Wars) and Robert Flemyng (Battle of Britain) star in this classic horror film. A crazed etymologist is dabbling in gruesome experiments that are turning his beautiful daughter into a vampire-beast with an insatiable lust for blood! From Cushing's investigations of the opening atrocities to the fieryfinale--this gory thriller from legendary director Vernon Sewell (Ghost Ship) is definitely not for the squeamish! Blu-ray Release Date: October 22nd, 2012

Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation BD - Mr. Hobbs (James Stewart) is an overworked business man who seeks a quiet seaside vacation with his wife (Maureen O'Hara) and family, including his grown daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. What he finds is a dilapidated beach house, nosey neighbors, and everything Hobbs does creates further complications... Twilight Time Blu-ray Release Date: April, 2014

Gila! - The movie opens with a young couple parked in a bleak, rural locale pondering their future, A giant gila monster attacks the car, sending the young couple running for their lives. Chase Winstead , a young mechanic and hot rod racer and his girl Lisa (Madeline Voges), meets up with Chase's former nemesis, Waco Bob (Jesse Janzen) and his sidekick Carla (Christina De Rosa). Prompted by calls from Mayor Wheeler (Gerard Pauwels) ,The local Sheriff (Terence Knox) enlists the help of Chase, a young mechanic and hot rod racer, locates the crashed car in the ravine and finds evidence of the giant lizard. DVD Release Date: April 22nd, 2014

The Lost Empire - After officer Rob Wolfe is killed trying to stop a gang of ninjas from robbing a jewelery store, his sister, officer Angel Wolfe, vows to avenge his death. Her investigation leads her to the mysterious Dr. Sin Do, who is supposedly in league with an undead wizard named Lee Chuck. The doctor is holding a martial arts tournament on a secret island fortress, so Angel, after rounding up some of her martial-artist friends, enters the tournament in the hopes of finding Sin Do and Lee Chuck and bringing them to justice. DVD Release Date: April 22nd, 2014

Black Torment - An 18th-century gothic thriller, depicted with the vivid colors and overt eroticism borrowed from the Hammer horror films, THE BLACK TORMENT has emerged from obscurity to become recognized as "a minor classic...basically another retelling of Du Maurier's Rebecca except with blood, guts, and ghostly goings-on" (britishhorrorfilms.co.uk). Returning to his country estate with his new bride, English nobleman Sir Richard Fordyce finds himself under suspicion from angry locals for the rape and brutal murder of a young girl. Despite Sir Richard's professed innocence, a growing hysteria unfolds, as strange and even supernatural events begin to occur around him. With no one to turn to and his new wife threatening to shoot him, Sir Richard begins to question his own guilt... and sanity! DVD Release Date: April 29th, 2014
