ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): First spot is pretty easy this week - Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole get the Blu-ray treatment on both sides of the pond. Both releases are fabulous - a must-own film in 1080P! Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac Vol 1 + 2 gets plenty of interest - on Blu-ray from Artificial Eye in the UK. Get Carter is an absolute classic and reaches Blu-ray from Warner. It was a pleasure to see Brian De Palma's Sisters on Blu-ray via Arrow - certainly worth it - even if only for the Herrmann score in lossless! Criterion introduce Dino Risi's Il Sorpasso to Blu-ray and the experience is... unforgettable. David Lynch's Wild at Heart gets a definitive Blu-ray edition via Twilight Time. It's the best. Richard Fleischer's Violent Saturday looks amazing on Blu-ray and its a rich layered film. A must -own, IMO. Great to see the Euro Gilda on Blu-ray but it makes us contemplate a US edition to compare (Please?). Claude Chabrol's wonderful Inspector Lavardin films get a Blu-ray release via Cohen Media and it has a lot of value. Valdez is Coming is an excellent western with Burt Lancaster and now on region FREE Blu-ray our of Germany. I've always enjoyed Conspiracy Theory and the bare-bones Blu-ray is priced right. Tourist Trap is one of the superior of its sub-genre and a huge upgrade on Blu-ray from 88 Films. Unfortunately, Bloodsucking Freaks is a piece of pure trash. Daniel has reviewed another Blu-ray Audio package - The Velvet Underground and Nico - get a thumbs down. On DVD, the restored The Strange Woman with Hedy Lamarr is a huge upgrade over the previous SD transfers. Unfortunately, the 1941 war-romance Confirm or Deny with Joan Bennett is unforgivably weak via Fox's DVD. Eric covered the 4-film Henry Jaglom Collection Vol 3, the UK TV sitcom The Brittas Empire, and Interior. Leather Bar. - a broad exploration of sexual and creative freedom. Eric also uncovered that Kino's Jørgen Leth + Lars von Trier's The Five Obstructions Special Remastered edition is the exact same as their 2004 DVD.. Talk to you next week. Peace!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Inspector Lavardin Collection BD - Both of Claude Chabrol's murderous black comedy, feature film mysteries starring Jean Poiret as the incomparable Inspector Lavardin: Chicken with Vinegar: When a small town begins losing its citizenry in a series of grisly murders, out-of-town police inspector Jean Lavardin is sent to investigate. Could the killers be a bullied son and his cruel mother, who run the local post office? Or a pushy trio of would-be land developers? Inspector Lavardin: When a wealthy and devout Roman Catholic writer is found murdered on a beach with the word "PIG" written on his back, Inspector Lavardin is sent to investigate. In the course of his probing, he discovers that the widow is an old flame of his and that the small coastal town holds other secrets. Blu-ray Release date: April 22nd, 2014

Wild at Heart BD - Adapted from the picaresque novel by Barry Gifford, writer-director David Lynch’s Wild at Heart (1990) is a scarifying road movie starring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as Sailor and Lula, a pair of star-crossed lovers pursued across the American landscape by all manner of horrors. Most are unleashed by Lula’s unhinged mother (played by Diane Ladd, Dern’s real-life Mom), a woman scorned who will stop at nothing to destroy Sailor. Also starring Harry Dean Stanton, Isabella Rossellini, and Willem Dafoe, and featuring a haunting score by Angelo Badalamenti. Blu-ray Release date: April 22nd, 2014

Conspiracy Theory BD - Jerry Fletcher (Mel Gibson) is a New York City cab driver who seems to have absorbed every bit of crackpot information passed along as "suppressed news" that's surfaced on talk radio or the Internet in the past 20 years. Anti-United Nations militia men who are actually U.N. operatives? NASA scientists engineering earthquakes? Oliver Stone's secret life as a government agent discrediting conspiracy theorists? Jerry's heard 'em all and believes most of them, and even publishes his own journal of forbidden information, with a subscription list that now totals five people. In short, Jerry seems like just another New York City lunatic, and while he spends a fair amount of his spare time following Alice Sutton (Julia Roberts), a government attorney, Alice regards him as harmless; he once intervened while she was being mugged, and he's been acting like her benign if whacked-out protector ever since. Blu-ray Release date: April 22nd, 2014

Ace in the Hole BD - One of the most scathing indictments of American culture ever produced by a Hollywood filmmaker, Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole is legendary for both its cutting social critique and its status as a hard-to-find cult classic. Kirk Douglas gives the fiercest performance of his career as Chuck Tatum, an amoral newspaper reporter caught in dead-end Albuquerque who happens upon the story of a lifetime—and will do anything to ensure he gets the scoop. Wilder’s follow-up to Sunset Boulevard is an even darker vision, a no-holds-barred exposé that anticipated the rise of the American media circus. MoC Blu-ray Release date: April 28th, 2014 / Criterion Blu-ray - May 6th, 2014

The Velvet Underground and Nico BD Audio - In the mid 1960s, John Cale provided the sound, heavily influenced by experimental music pioneers and Lou Reed provided the attitude while Andy Warhol gave it a certain art-school appeal. The Velvet Underground & Nico is unlike any album released before it. It charted new areas in music, taking it away from musicianship and polished production. It took it in a much newer, darker, more experimental direction that tackled unheard of subject matters in typical NYC style: bluntly and directly. It also had a certain democratizing effect in music: it is said that anyone who heard the early Velvet Underground work wanted to be in a band. Blu-ray Audio Release date: October 30th, 2013

Tourist Trap BD - An eerie and deserted wax museum, SLAUSEN'S LOST OASIS, is the site for spine-tingling terror where four unsuspecting young travelers (Including TANYA ROBERTS from Charlie s Angels & A View to a Kill) are lured into a very deadly TOURIST TRAP. Slausen (CHUCK CONNERS, Soylent Green ) is the reclusive and bizarre owner of this attraction, which is actually more like a macabre chamber of horrors. The grotesque and frightening mannequins in this sordid side-show are only the beginning of the murderous mayhem and nightmarish madness to come.. Blu-ray Release Date: April 21st, 2014

Il Sorpasso BD - The ultimate Italian road comedy, Il sorpasso stars the unlikely pair of Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant as, respectively, a waggish, freewheeling bachelor and the straitlaced law student he takes on a madcap trip from Rome to Tuscany. An unpredictable journey that careers from slapstick to tragedy, this film, directed by Dino Risi, is a wildly entertaining commentary on the pleasures and consequences of the good life. A holy grail of commedia all’italiana, Il sorpasso is so fresh and exciting that one can easily see why it has long been adored in Italy. Blu-ray Release date: April 29th, 2014

Nymphomaniac Vol 1 + 2 BD - Nymphomaniac is the wild and poetic story of a woman's journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg). On a cold winter's evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard), finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lusty, branched-out and multifaceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents. Blu-ray Release Date: April 28th, 2014

Violent Saturday BD - Three criminals arrive in the small mining town of Bradenville, planning on robbing its only bank. But as they start scouting the area and gathering the information they need, the lives of others in the town threaten to get mixed up in their scheme, in a tangle that could lead to disastrous consequences. Featuring the iconic Victor Mature and Lee Marvin, and with Ernest Borgnine in one of his most unforgettable roles, Violent Saturday is a fascinating gem of Hollywood storytelling, complete with memorably vicious and idiosyncratic details, brilliant performances, and stunning Cinemascope imagery. Blu-ray Release Date: April 28th, 2014

Sisters BD - When Danielle (Margot Kidder) meets potential boyfriend Philip (Lisle Wilson) after appearing on the TV show Peeping Toms (a nod to the Michael Powell shocker), she invites him home, only to attract the ire of her twin sister Dominique. From across the courtyard, Rear Window style, reporter Grace (Jennifer Salt) witnesses Philip being murdered by one of the twins - but the police find no body or any physical evidence. Naturally, Grace takes things into her own hands, and discovers more about the sisters relationship than she bargained for... Blu-ray Release Date: April 28th, 2014

Valdez is Coming BD - Adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel, Valdez is Coming stars Burt Lancaster in the title role. A scrupulously honest Mexican-American marshal, Bob Valdez is double-crossed and humiliated by wealthy, unscrupulous rancher Jon Cypher. Since Cypher has the law on his side, Valdez is obliged to mete out his own justice. He kidnaps Cypher's mistress Susan Clark to force the rancher's hand. At first, Cypher is able to rally a group of tough hombres against Valdez, but one by one they side with the marshal. Director Edwin Sherin, who'd helmed the Broadway production of The Great White Hope, makes several rather anachronistic points regarding the film's racial issues; on the other hand, Valdez is Coming is one of the most-authentic looking westerns ever made-right down to the deglamorization of Susan Clark, who in a 1950s film might have looked as though she'd just visited a frontier branch of Max Factor. Blu-ray Release date: May 31st, 2013

Gilda BD - "How much acting skill was involved in creating this effect? Who cares. It's not "acting," it's mythmaking. Hayworth could, as it happens, snap off sarcastic dialogue as well as Veronica Lake, but it's not the dialogue you're paying attention to. Her voice is like thick maple syrup, her huge lips wrap around every word with the studied enthusiasm of a Pentecostal zealot" Blu-ray Release Date: April 3rd, 2014

Get Carter BD - Get Carter stars Michael Caine as Jack Carter, a powerful British gangster out for blood. His brother has been murdered in Newcastle, prompting Carter to declare a one-man war on other racketeers. Carter must also get his niece out of the life she is leading as an actress in pornographic films. Now that he is a loose cannon, Carter must be eliminated. Get Carter is typical action fare of the 1970s in that there are virtually no "good guys" -- in fact, the assassin is probably the most likable character in the piece! Originally rated X for violence and female nudity, Get Carter was reclassified as an R after subsequent crime films became even more bloodthirsty. Blu-ray Release date: April 22nd, 2014

Bloodsucking Freaks BD - BLOODSUCKING FREAKS takes you to a bizarre Off-Broadway theatre of the macabre, operated by a deranged impresario. Inside, sadistic entertainments are staged for his audience s pleasure, including tortures, dismemberments, and other gruesome acts which appear to be faked. When people begin disappearing off the streets of Manhattan, the twisted truth begins to chillingly sink in: these horrifying bloodcurdling acts are not theatrical at all. They are real! Blu-ray Release Date: April 21st, 2014

The Henry Jaglom Collection Vol 3 - From legendary maverick filmmaker Henry Jaglom comes Henry Jaglom Collection vol. 3: The Women's Quartet. Jaglom, one of the most prolific directors working today, has assembled four of his classic comedies starring some of the most talented actresses working today: Tanna Frederick, Frances Fisher, Mary Crosby, Victoria Foyt, Mae Whitman, Victoria Tennant and Lee Grant. The box set includes Eating (1990), Babyfever (1994), Going Shopping (2007), and Irene In Time (2009). DVD Release Date: April 8th, 2014

The Brittas Empire - In this classic TV sitcom, Gordon Brittas (Chris Barrie) is the manager of Whitbury New Town Leisure Centre. He means well, wants to do well and desperately wants to be a good manager. Unfortunately his best talent is to continually create recipes for total disaster. Deep down Brittas cares for his staff, but all he ever seems to do is to make their lives more difficult. Trying to rise above this, and to keep the Centre running smoothly, is his assistant Laura (Julia St. John) and of course Colin, complete with boil! DVD Release Date: April 14th, 2014

Confirm or Deny - Don Ameche, an American news bureau chief stationed in London, is frustrated by the British government's censorship of his wildly speculative dispatches to the United States. Joan Bennett is the government Teletype operator assigned to make sure that Ameche doesn't send out any story that hasn't been cleared. At first adversarial towards each other, Ameche and Bennet fall in love while huddled in various bomb shelters during the 1940 London blitz. Clearly inspired by Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent (40), Confirm or Deny was one of many "preparedness" films turned out by Hollywood in the months just prior to Pearl Harbor. Any political proselytizing, however, takes second place to the Don Ameche/Joan Bennett love story. DVD Release Date: June 12th, 2013

The Strange Woman - Hedy Lamarr is very alluring in this sordid romantic saga based on the book by Ben Ames Williams. She plays Jenny, a lusty, sociopathic lass in the wilds of 18th Century Bangor, Maine, who uses her beauty to snare a local, rich, middle-aged businessman (Gene Lockhart). She then seduces his weak-willed son (Louis Hayward) and later goes after John (George Sanders), a tall, dark, handsome woodsman engaged to her friend, Mae (Hillary Brooke). For a period piece made in the 1940s, this film is briskly paced, action-packed, and unusually erotic, courtesy the assured direction of low-budget genius Edgar G. Ulmer (Detour, Strange Illusion etc.) DVD Release Date: April 29th, 2014

The Five Obstructions - Once upon a time--1967, to be precise--Danish director Jørgen Leth released The Perfect Human. In The Five Obstructions, fellow countryman Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves) challenges his "hero" to remake the short five times and provides a different set of "obstructions" for each. Because Leth likes cigars, von Trier suggests the first be made in Cuba. For the second, however, he sends Leth to "the worst place on earth"--Bombay's red light district. The obstructions keep coming, interspersed with conversation and clips from the original film, in which actors engage in a variety of activities, like eating and dancing, while the narrator posits oblique questions like "Why is joy so whimsical?" (Von Trier claims to have watched it "at least 20 times.") In the end, the two Danes have whipped up an unclassifiable concoction that plays less like documentary and more like a duel between friendly adversaries. DVD Release Date: April 22nd, 2014

Interior. Leather Bar. - Inspired by the mythology surrounding the highly controversial 1980 film, Cruising, starring Al Pacino - in which, 40 minutes of sexually explicit material was forced to be cut out - filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews set out to re-imagine the lost footage. Assembling a mix of gay and straight men, including Val Lauren (The Salton Sea, Live from Baghdad) in the lead role, the result is a provocative exploration of the importance of the radical and transgressive in society and the value of engaging with the unfamiliar. DVD Release Date: April 15th, 2014
