Newsletter - FOR THE WEEK

OF March 14th, 2011

  This Week's Highlights
Ia ora na  - The March slowdown is somewhat welcome! We can put our film passions in perspective to send our best hopes and positive energies to the people of Japan at this time of their devastating earthquakes. All monies donated to DVDBeaver in the past month will go to support the emergency rescues on that island nation.

Have you seen our new 'video rundown' of this week's DVD and Blu-ray releases - on our homepage or HERE via YouTube!

FOLLOW US on TWITTER! (where we post important reviews, contests - prizes, calendar updates - plus much more...)

FEATURE DVD and Blu-ray of the MONTH chosen for March (Two Documentaries!)! HERE

TOOLBAR THE 'DVDBeaver Toolbar'! Give it a test drive! I've created a very simple toolbar for Film-Fans/DVD-o-philes/cinephiles. It embeds effortlessly within Internet Explorer 5.0+ (Windows Vista/XP/2000) and Firefox 1.0.1+ (Windows, Mac, Linux). It offers quick links to Searching both the Net (via Google) and DVDBeaver directly, Amazons, Asian etailors, Forums (Criterion, Home Theater, AVS, Rotten Tomatoes, Film Noir), IMDb, DVDBasen, Beaver links, Blu-ray information, Cinephile Blogs/Journals (Rosenbaum, Kehr, Acquarello etc.). What do you think? FOR MORE INFORMATION / AVAILABLE HERE *** (We can adjust this to suit popular opinion - on-the-fly - no re-install required!)

March 14th CONTEST - identify the clip on the CONTEST PAGE to win a Brand NEW Blu-ray of Hereafter

BIG THANKS!: DVDBeaver would not exist without the support of many patrons - those who generously donate, and especially those who use our Amazon(s), CD Japan, HKFlix and YesAsia links. That's it. When you go to Amazon - PLEASE use one of our links to get there (they are on every page - top and bottom - and we have 5000 webpages). It costs you absolutely nothing and we get a small commission on items you purchase. This helps pay our bills - in fact it's the only thing that pays our bills.
STRATEGIES: The best way to take full advantage of Amazon is to use...
PRE-ORDERs - lock in at the discount price by ORDERING - if perchance you decide against the purchase you have until the release date to cancel - at no charge AND if you will purchase more than 35 DVDs (or anything) in a 365 day period (and live in the Continental US) it makes excellent financial sense to subscribe to Amazon
NOTE:_

If there are DVD titles you'd like us to cover - please feel free to recommend!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Perfume of the Lady in Black - Sylvia Hacherman (Mimsy Farmer, FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET) is a young workaholic chemist living alone in an old apartment building in Rome (the exterior facade of which later showed up prominently in the Rome sequence of Dario Argento's INFERNO). When she attends a party with her geologist boyfriend Roberto (Maurizio Bonuglia, TOP SENSATION/THE SEDUCERS) for African university professor Andy (Jho Jenkins, SHAFT IN AFRICA), she is unnerved when the talk turns to black magic and human sacrifice. She is further unnerved when she subsequently pricks her finger on a nail while playing tennis with Andy, Roberto, and neighbor Francesca (Donna Jordan, L'AMOUR). DVD Release Date: March 22nd, 2011

The Times of Harvey Milk BD - A true twentieth-century trailblazer, Harvey Milk was an outspoken human rights activist and one of the first openly gay U.S. politicians elected to public office; even after his assassination in 1978, he continues to inspire disenfranchised people around the world. The Oscar-winning The Times of Harvey Milk, directed by Robert Epstein and produced by Richard Schmiechen, was as groundbreaking as its subject. One of the first feature documentaries to address gay life in America, it’s a work of advocacy itself, bringing Milk’s message of hope and equality to a wider audience. This exhilarating trove of original documentary material and archival footage is as much a vivid portrait of a time and place (San Francisco’s historic Castro District in the seventies) as a testament to the legacy of a political visionary. Blu-ray Release Date: March 22nd, 2011

A World Without Thieves - Pickpocket Bo (Andy Lau, INFERNAL AFFAIRS) and Li (Rene Liu, DOUBLE VISION) are on the run after their latest score. Li has grown tired of their lifestyle and wants to go straight (when they stop at a temple to pray, at her insistence, Li is disgusted that Bo has made off with the cellphones of several members of the pilgrimage). They run into a bumpkin construction worker Fu (Baoqiang Wang, also in Xiaogang Feng's ASSEMBLY), who is traveling back home with his entire life savings in a duffel bag and is not weary enough of thieves. Bo sees this as a chance for a last score, but Li wants to protect the peasant. Unfortunately, they are sharing the train they have boarded with a gang of thieves and arrogant Bo immediately clashes with their leader Uncle Le (Ge You, TO LIVE) - his skills are so honed that he can peel a raw egg with a fingernail - who also has designs on Fu's life savings. DVD Release Date: September 21st, 2009

Rope of Sand - After a two-year hiatus, Mike Davis (Burt Lancaster) returns to the same African city where he was tortured and left for dead at the hands of a sadistic Police Commandant (Paul Henreid). Originally innocent of all charges, Mike is back to claim the diamonds he had supposedly stolen two years ago. He enlists the help of an alcoholic stranger (Peter Lorre) and the doctor (Sam Jaffe), who had helped him back to health. The diamond syndicate head (Claude Rains) recruits a nightclub temptress Suzanne Renaud (Corinne Calvet) to seduce and betray Mike as an alternate to brute force. This suspense-noir classic was directed by William Dieterle (Dark City). DVD Release Date: April 3rd, 2011

Pete Kelly's Blues - The story opens in Kansas City in 1927 during Prohibition. Jazz cornetist Pete Kelly (Webb) and his Big Seven are the house band at the 17 Club, a lower-level speakeasy at 17 Cherry Street in Kansas City when Pete is approached by new local crime boss Fran McCarg (Edmond O'Brien), who intends to put Kelly on his own client list. McCarg gives Kelly until the end of the night to talk it over with the band and to “make up his mind”. DVD Release Date: July 22nd, 2008

Phenomena BD - After a pre-credits murder of a Danish tourist (Fiore Argento) who has missed her bus and wandered over to an ominous chalet inhabited by a chained unseen presence, we meet our heroine Jennifer (Jennifer Connelly) who has been enrolled at an exclusive Swiss all-girls school while her actor father works overseas. On the first night, her unfortunate habit of sleepwalking puts her in the position of witnessing the violent murder of one of the schoolgirls. When Jennifer's own roommate disappears, a firefly leads her to a maggot-infested glove that possibly belongs to the killer. Although no one at the school believes Jennifer, local entomologist John McGregor (Donald Pleasance) identifies Jennifer's psychic affinity with insects as an advantage in tracking down the killer.
