ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Criterion's Blu-ray of George Stevens’s Woman of the Year steals top spot with the debut pairing of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy initiating an onscreen chemistry that would last a 1/4 century. Paul Verhoeven's Elle with Isabelle Huppert is a mysterious, dark film that suits her perfectly and can now be viewed on Blu-ray from Sony. Pedro Almodóvar's Julieta may be his best film in many years and also comes to Blu-ray from Sony. We have two stellar westerns this week; John Ford's Two Rode Together with Stewart/Widmark as the titular characters on Blu-ray from The Masters of Cinema and Henry Hathaway's tense thriller Rawhide with Tyrone Power and Susan Hayward is a solid Blu-ray package from Signal One. I had a lot of fun with Anna Biller's The Love Witch - a kind of homage throwback with sexist themes, with hypnotic Samantha Robinson, now on Blu-ray from Oscilloscope Laboratories. Always a delight, Wim Wenders' Buena Vista Social Club get the Criterion Blu-ray treatment. Train to Busan is a super-duper Zombie popcorner out of Korea and the effects look awesome on Blu-ray. Richard Fleischer's Between Heaven and Hell is a deeply probing atypical war film - now on Blu-ray from Signal One. Passengers is a new sci-fi romance with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt with dazzling space scenes in 1080P. Luci Fulci's Don't Torture a Duckling may be the most improved Blu-ray over SD this week, but we are still investigating the strange 6-minute longer running time. Juan Piquer Simon's Pieces remains iconic in the slasher genre and Arrow's new Blu-ray is a fabulous package. Unfortunately, Panorama's The Twilight Samurai Blu-ray is a dud - still waiting for the definitive BD release. On DVD I covered Dangerous with a stellar performance from Bette Davis. Gregory compared the Noir, The Counterfeit Plan with a bit of a surprise result. Eric revels in his niche with Bare Breasted Countess, Helga the She Wolf of Stilberg and Zombie Lake.

"Noir was a brainchild of the United States. And most of the creators of classic noir - novelists and screenwriters, directors and cameramen - were men. Women were their mysterious, sometimes villainous, always seductive objects of desire..” ― Margo Jefferson

Best to you all this coming week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Buena Vista Social Club BD - Traveling from the streets of Havana to the stage of Carnegie Hall, this revelatory documentary captures a forgotten generation of Cuba’s brightest musical talents as they enjoy an unexpected encounter with world fame. The veteran vocalists and instrumentalists collaborated with American guitarist and roots-music champion Ry Cooder to form the Buena Vista Social Club, playing a jazz-inflected mix of cha-cha, mambo, bolero, and other traditional Latin American styles, and recording an album that won a Grammy and made them an international phenomenon. In the wake of this success, director Wim Wenders filmed the ensemble’s members—including golden-voiced Ibrahim Ferrer and piano virtuoso Rubén González—in a series of illuminating interviews and live performances. The result is one of the most beloved documentaries of the 1990s, and an infectious ode to a neglected corner of Cuba’s prerevolutionary heritage. Blu-ray Release date: April 18th, 2017

Julieta BD - In Julieta, critically acclaimed director Pedro Almodovar tells a story about a mother’s struggle to survive uncertainty and come to grips with fate. Julieta lives in Madrid with her daughter, Antia. They are both in pain over the loss of Xoan, Antia’s father and Julieta’s husband. But sometimes grief doesn’t bring people closer, it drives them apart. When Antia turns eighteen, she abandons her mother without a word of explanation. Julieta is haunted by the mystery of this loss and it pervades everything in her life. Her struggle and obsession lead to self-discovery and surprising revelations. Blu-ray Release date: March 21st, 2017

Woman of the Year BD - George Stevens’s Woman of the Year, conceived to build on the smashing comeback Katharine Hepburn had made in The Philadelphia Story, marked the beginning of the personal and professional union between Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, who would go on to make eight more films together. This tale of two newspaper reporters who wed and then discover that their careers aren’t so compatible forges a fresh and realistic vision of what marriage can be. The freewheeling but pinpoint-sharp screenplay by Ring Lardner Jr. and Michael Kanin won an Academy Award, and Hepburn received a nomination for her performance. Woman of the Year is a dazzling, funny, and rueful observation of what it takes for men and women to get along—both in the workplace and outside of it. Blu-ray Release date: April 18th, 2017

The Love Witch BD - Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will driver her to the brink of insanity and murder. With a visual style that pays tribute to Technicolor thrillers of the 60s, THE LOVE WITCH explores female fantasy and the repercussions of pathological narcissism. Blu-ray Release date: March 14th, 2017

Train to Busan BD - When a mysterious virus breaks out across the country, the infected turn into the murderous undead. A few terrified travelers find themselves trapped on a bullet train from hell, fighting for their lives as hordes of the living dead crash towards them, crawling closer with every stop. Suspicion is rife and tensions run high as some will do anything to survive and make it to the safe zone! Blu-ray Release date: January 17th, 2017

Passengers BD - Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star in a high-stakes adventure about two passengers, Jim and Aurora, onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As they try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other only to discover that the ship itself is in grave danger. With the lives of 5000 sleeping passengers at stake, only Jim and Aurora can save them all. Blu-ray Release date: March 14th, 2017

Elle BD - Elle owes its success as much to lead actress Isabelle Huppert as to Verhoeven. Huppert, who earned a Lead Actress Oscar nomination (a decided rarity in a foreign-language film), is no stranger to playing psychologically complex characters but this may be her most conflicted one to date. Michele Leblanc is not easily pigeonholed. She’s smart, sarcastic, strong-willed, and fearless. She’s a proponent of “tough love” and uses people without a second thought. She enters risky relationships because of the thrill of danger. Emotionally and mentally, she’s damaged but what we initially take for denial may be something else altogether. She never plays the victim even when she is one. Huppert has no difficulty conveying all of this and much more, being simultaneously frightening and sexy. Blu-ray Release date: March 14th, 2017

Don't Torture a Duckling BD - The oddly titled Don't Torture a Duckling (taken from a minor plot point) is one of director Lucio Fulci's most linear and conventional narratives, relying more on story and mystery than on gore and atmospherics. In a rural Italian village, young boys turn up dead, and the authorities are stumped as to who the murderer is. A reporter lends his efforts to the hunt for the killer, many red herrings turn up, and more kids are murdered while the police search for the culprit. A sexually liberated young woman from Milan, a local witch, and the village idiot all fall under suspicion until the killer is uncovered. Blu-ray Release Date: December 2nd, 2016

The Twilight Samurai BD - Seibei is a petty Samurai in the time just prior to the Meiji restoration. Working as an accountant, he is without any ambition. The only thing he cares for is his two young daughters and his sick mother. In fact, he cares so little for anything else, that his clothes are torn and he rarely takes a bath. His colleagues laugh about him behind his back and give him the nickname “Twilight Seibei”. Panorama Blu-ray Release Date: February 18th, 2011

Pieces BD - A Boston college campus is being terrorised by a black-clad maniac who collects body parts from his unfortunate co-ed victims. As the corpses (and red herrings) begin to pile up, can Professor Brown (genre veteran Jack Taylor) unmask the murderer before his morbid puzzle is complete? Boasting some of the most outrageous gore set-pieces ever to splash their way across the screen (including a particularly memorable slow-motion evisceration atop a waterbed), Pieces is an essential slice of Spanish splatter Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: March 27th, 2017

Between Heaven and Hell BD - Robert Wagner, Terry Moore, Broderick Crawford and Buddy Ebsen star in this absorbing drama about a young, self-centered recruit who comes of age during WWII. Sam Gifford (Wagner) is a successful cotton planter who treats his sharecroppers as if they were little more than farm machinery. But during combat in the Pacific, as he sees "quality" people crack, endures life under a sadistic officer (Crawford), and learns true friendship, from a "cropper" (Ebsen), Gifford slowly discovers there's more to a person than social class and good breeding. Blu-ray Release date: February 20th, 2017

Two Rode Together BD - Stewart is the Marshall on a mission to rescue some whites captured by the Comanche. In it for the money rather than any sense of justice, he just wants to get the job over and done with. However, accompanied by cavalry officer Widmark, he is forced to re-evaluate his philosophy when matters come to a head. Not Ford at his best, but the three-dimensional performances and an unusually dark atmosphere make for an above average, occasionally gripping western. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: March 13th, 2017

Rawhide BD - In the Wild West, the Rawhide way station becomes the center of a hostage situation when four murderous fugitives (Hugh Marlowe, Dean Jagger, Jack Elam, George Tobias) take it over in a heist scheme. After killing the stationmaster (Tyrone Power), the criminals keep the only other employee, Sam Todd (Edgar Buchanan), alive to avoid outside suspicion by maintaining a front of normalcy. But Todd and the other hostages, Vinnie Holt (Susan Hayward) and her young niece, plot to make an escape. Signal One Blu-ray Release Date: February 20th, 2017

Dangerous - Joyce Heath's name in lights once meant long lines at the box office. Then the talented Broadway star's luck changed. Her shows folded. Her romances ended. And Joyce spent her days in a self-destructive stupor. But a new romance puts her on the road to recovery and holds the promise of marriage...if she can get her current husband out of the way. As Joyce, Bette Davis is in love and murderously dangerous in this atmospheric melodrama co-starring Franchot Tone. "The script had just enough material in it to build into something," the actress recalled. "I worked like 10 men on that film." As a result, she earned one of those highly coveted little gold men: the 1935 Academy Award statuette for Best Actress, her first in a trailblazing career so linked to the studio's success that Davis would be called "the fourth Warner Brother." DVD Release Date: March 22nd, 2012

The Counterfeit Plan - Zachary Scott plays a Dimitrios-like master criminal named Max Brant and, after effecting an escape from the gallows, hides out at old buddy Mervyn Johns' mansion. Johns is a former counterfeit engraver and he reluctantly gets roped into a new venture with Brant. Complications ensue when Johns' daughter (very lovely Peggie Castle) arrives home and Brant's lecherous tendencies are aroused. The picture moves well with every step of a counterfeit operation detailed and yet there is still time for some action and brutal shockers. Network DVD Release Date: February 15th, 2016

Bare Breasted Countess - A family of vampires from distant Bohemia quenches thirst for the living forces given forth by human bodies during the act of love. Irina, the beautiful last descendant, meets an Austrian writer, Rathony. And Irina's gluttonous lips devour the living forces of her lover who surrenders to her his body and soul! DVD Release Date: March 6th, 2017

Helga the She Wolf of Stilberg - Thriller directed by Patrice Rhomm starring Patrizia Gori, Malisa Longo and Richard Allan. Stilberg is a brutal penitentiary for female political prisoners. It is managed by the cruel warden Helga (Longo), who unleashes her vicious nature and grotesque lust upon new inmate Elisabeth Vogel (Gori). DVD Release Date: March 13th 2017

Zombie Lake - French horror maestro, Jean Rollin directs this zombie classic where young, nubile women are disappearing without trace in a small lakeside town. The superstitious locals blame The Lake of Ghosts, but the town's mayor (Howard Vernon) is unwilling to investigate. When another woman is found dead with her throat ripped out, a reporter discovers that the lake harbours a terrible secret dating back to World War II. Now the locals must become resistance fighters once again - and take on the returning Nazi zombie Stormtroopers who are back from the dead! DVD Release Date: March 20th, 2017
