ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): It was very special to see Criterion's 4K restoration Blu-ray of Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up this week. A wonderful experience that we rate as our top pick in this incredible-film-filled week. BFI's double Blu-ray set of Lino Brocka: Two Films (Manila in the Claws of Light - 1975 + Insiang - 1976) was monumentally impacting. The same sentiment can be used for Felipe Cazals' Canoa: A Shameful Memory - another restored 4K digital transfer Blu-ray from Criterion. Indicator in the UK continue to bring us their magic with definitive Blu-rays of important films; Hal Ashby's realistically brilliant The Last Detail, Otto Preminger's mysterious Bunny Lake is Missing and Sidney Lumet's heist-surveillance drama The Anderson Tapes - all in exemplary, and region FREE, Blu-ray packages. I loved Kino Lorber's Blu-ray of Felix E. Feist's apocalypse pre-code wonder Deluge from 1933 - it's just great - nu'ff said. John Waters’ gloriously grotesque Multiple Maniacs looks fabulous on Criterion's 4K restored Blu-ray. Totally fascinating - in its creative unusual-ness. How did Fred Zinnemann's historical-biographical masterpiece A Man For All Seasons - on Blu-ray from Masters of Cinema - get so far back in this discussion. Unjust, I say! One of the best films mentioned! Arrow bring the genre-fusing Psychomania to region 'A' Blu-ray audiences - a Brit biker-horror with a charm of its own. New York Express (Blindfold) is a fun spy spoof adventure with Rock Hudson and Claudia Cardinale - now on Blu-ray from Explosive-Media . As is the Audie Murphy western The Guns of Fort Petticoat with a host of great gal performances. Phil Karlson's Framed is a harsh revenge flic from the 70's with perennial angry cracker Joe Don Baker seeking vengeance and now available on Blu-ray from Kino. A*P*E, also known as the Korean King Kong, gets the 3D Blu-ray treatment but it really is 'soo bad it's amusing' status. DVD reviews will return next week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Deluge BD - This remarkable early-talkie "disaster" flick was the first directorial effort of Felix E. Feist. An enormous tidal wave destroys New York City and most of the Eastern seaboard -- and that's only the beginning of the picture! The rest of the film deals with the aftermath of the deluge. Hero Martin (Sidney Blackmer), certain that his wife Helen (Lois Wilson) and his children have died in the disaster, begins a romance with bathing beauty Claire (Peggy Shannon). They must fight for their lives against Jephson (Fred Kohler Sr.) and his band of outlaws, who are using the apocalyptic crisis as an excuse to rape and pillage. Blu-ray Release date: February 21st, 2017

The Anderson Tapes BD - An early example of the techno-thriller, The Anderson Tapes--sharply directed by Sidney Lumet from the novel by Lawrence Sanders--follows just-out-of-stir Duke Anderson (a balding Sean Connery) as he plots the heist of an entire New York apartment building, enlisting a crew that includes Martin Balsam as a vintage 1971 gay stereotype and a very young Christopher Walken in perhaps the first of his jittery crook roles. The gimmick is that Anderson has been out of circulation so long that he doesn't realise his mafia backers are only supporting him because they feel nostalgic for the days before they were boring businessmen and that the whole setup is monitored by a criss-crossing selection of government and private agencies who don't care enough to thwart the robbery, which instead becomes unglued thanks to a gutsy young radio ham. Blu-ray Release date: February 27th, 2017

Bunny Lake is Missing BD - The vast range of responses to and assessments of this movie here are a tribute to what an odd film this is in many ways. And it's difficult to comment on some of its oddest features (chiefly the performances of Dullea and Lynley) without giving away aspects of the plot that it's best you don't know when seeing the movie. I guess it's safe to say that I found both of these performances underwhelming but adequate. To be fair, both of them come off better by the end of the film than they do in its first third. Your take on Lynley's character will definitely evolve as the film progresses, which must in some degree be to her credit. Indicator Blu-ray Release date: February 27th, 2017

Framed BD - Director Phil Karlson harks back to the no-nonsense, no-thrills directness of his 1950s "B" pictures in Framed. Joe Don Baker, Karlson's star in Walking Tall, plays Ron, a high-rolling gambler with a streak of integrity. Framed by the film's villains--including a cartel of corrupt cops--Ron is carted off to prison. Upon his release, he embarks upon a carefully calculated campaign of revenge. The film's stylistic ties to the enormously successful Walking Tall include the screenwriting contributions of Mort Briskin. Blu-ray Release date: February 28th, 2017

The Last Detail BD - Two Navy "lifers" and one military innocent briefly attempt to thumb their nose at Authority in Hal Ashby's The Last Detail (1973). "Badass" Buddusky (Jack Nicholson) and "Mule" Mulhall (Otis Young) are assigned to escort young sailor Meadows (Randy Quaid, who beat out John Travolta for the part) from their Virginia base to a New England military prison, where Meadows will serve an eight-year sentence for attempting to swipe the commander's wife's polio donation can. Buddusky thinks that the sentence is a waste of Meadows' formative years, and he convinces a skeptical Mulhall to show the hapless Meadows a good time by partying on their per diem for the rest of the detail's allotted week. Indicator Blu-ray Release date: February 27th, 2017

Canoa: A Shameful Memory BD - One of Mexico’s most highly regarded works of political cinema, Canoa: A Shameful Memory reimagines a real-life incident that had occurred just eight years before its release, when a group of urban university employees on a hiking trip were viciously attacked by residents of the village of San Miguel Canoa who had been manipulated by a corrupt priest into believing the travelers were communist revolutionaries. Director Felipe Cazals adopts a gritty documentary style to narrate the events in Canoa while referencing the climate of political repression that would lead to the massacre of student protesters in Mexico City shortly thereafter. The resulting film is a daring commentary on ideological manipulation, religious fanaticism, and mass violence, as well as a visceral expression of horror. Blu-ray Release date: March 14th, 2017

The Guns of Fort Petticoat BD - In 1864, during the American Civil War, Texan Lt. Frank Hewitt (Audie Murphy) is serving with the U.S. Cavalry under Colonel John Chivington. On patrol, Hewitt meets a group of Indians who are unarmed and returning to the Sand Creek reservation which they were not supposed to leave. While being briefed by Hewitt, the colonel orders the attack known to history as the Sand Creek Massacre. Hewitt not only disagrees with the punishment of the Indians, but realizes they will use the attack as an excuse to unite and spread terror throughout the Southwest, including his own hometown in Texas which has been emptied of the majority of its men who are fighting for the Confederacy. Colonel Chivington sees Indian attacks on Texas as a bonus to create havoc in the Confederacy. Violently objecting, Hewitt is placed under arrest and confined to quarters. Blu-ray Release date: July 22nd, 2016

New York Express (Blindfold) BD - When top-level scientist Arthur Vincenti (Alejandro Rey) suffers a nervous collapse, his military handlers fear he may be at risk of being kidnapped by a group of international terrorists who sell their victims to the governments of communist nations. Vincenti's psychiatrist, Dr. Bartholomew Snow (Rock Hudson), and fractious sister, Vicky (Claudia Cardinale), are drawn into a web of intrigue alongside the mysterious Fitzpatrick (Guy Stockwell), who claims Vincenti may already be an enemy agent. Blu-ray Release date: August 5th, 2016

A*P*E BD - A freighter peacefully glides the still waters of a soft Pacific night; their cargo: a recently captured 36-foot ape. A giant fist comes up through the deck sending the sailors sprawling and in a matter of seconds, the A*P*E (Attacking Primate monster) is loose! After battling a very large snake and a giant white shark, A*P*E defies the JAWS of the great white and is the victor. American actress (Joanna Kerns, TV's Growing Pains) arrives in South Korea to appear in a film, at the same time, A*P*E has also arrived and lays waste the city of Inchon and continues his march forward, destroying everything in his path. Blu-ray Release date: February 28th, 2017

Multiple Maniacs BD - John Waters’ gloriously grotesque second feature is replete with all manner of depravity, from robbery to murder to one of cinema’s most memorably blasphemous moments. Made on a shoestring budget in Waters’ native Baltimore, with the filmmaker taking on nearly every technical task, this gleeful mockery of the peace-and-love ethos of its era features the Cavalcade of Perversion, a traveling show mounted by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine, out for blood after discovering her lover’s affair. Starring members of Waters’ beloved regular cast, the Dreamlanders (including David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, Susan Lowe, Edith Massey, George Figgs, and Cookie Mueller), Multiple Maniacs is an anarchic masterwork from an artist who has doggedly tested the limits of good taste for decades. Blu-ray Release dates: March 21st, March 27th, 2017

A Man For All Seasons BD - Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield), Englands Roman Catholic Chancellor, is forced into a difficult position when corrupt King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw, From Russia with Love) demands his approval to divorce his wife and marry his mistress. Torn between his conscience and duty to the crown, Sir Thomas chooses to say nothing, sparking the rage of the king. What unfolds is a battle of wills packed with palace intrigue, political brinkmanship and the fate of man, church and country. In the end, his silence spoke loudest of all. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: February 20th, 2017

Blow-Up BD - In 1966, Michelangelo Antonioni transplanted his existentialist ennui to the streets of swinging London for this international sensation, the Italian filmmaker’s first English-language feature. A countercultural masterpiece about the act of seeing and the art of image making, Blow-Up takes the form of a psychological mystery, starring David Hemmings as a fashion photographer who unknowingly captures a death on film after following two lovers in a park. Antonioni’s meticulous aesthetic control and intoxicating color palette breathe life into every frame, and the jazzy sounds of Herbie Hancock, a beautifully evasive performance by Vanessa Redgrave, and a cameo by the Yardbirds make the film a transporting time capsule from a bygone era. Blow-Up is a seductive immersion into creative passion, and a brilliant film by one of cinema’s greatest artists. Blu-ray Release Date: March 28th, 2017

Lino Brocka: Two Films BD - Filipino director Lino Brocka was a force of nature in world cinema, his powerful work illuminating the harsh social realities of life in his home country. His films have been largely unavailable on DVD and Blu-ray but now, thanks to Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project, his two finest works have been rescued from obscurity and restored in 4K. Blu-ray Release date: March 20th, 2017

Psychomania BD - Upon discovering a dark family secret Tom Latham (Nick Henson), the leader of hell-raising teen motorcycle gang 'The Living Dead', decides to take drastic measures to ensure his gang's superiority. Through his devil-worshipping mother (Beryl Reid), Tom makes a pact with Satan to ascertain the secret of immortality. Using this information he encourages his fellow riders to end their lives, safe in the knowledge that they'll soon return from the dead to invulnerably terrorise the locals. Packed with gothic tropes, black humour and eccentric performances (including George Sanders final screen role), Psychomania is a cult horror classic brimming with exciting action and fantastical mayhem.
