ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): We have a few revealing comparisons this week. Kenji Mizoguchi's The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum gets a new Region 'A' Blu-ray release via Shochiku Home Video and it has some notable differences from the previous Artificial Eye transfer. Kino offer Blu-rays of two Fritz Lang Silent Era masterworks; Spione (Spies) has some positives, and negatives, when compared to the 2014 Masters of Cinema transfers - as does their Woman in the Moon Blu-ray package. Essential films. Orson Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons gets a less-satisfactory Blu-ray release out of Japan. Arrow do their usual impressive job with a mid-1980s slasher-flic; The Mutilator on Blu-ray is stacked with extras and will appeal to some. VCI show some promise with their new Blu-ray release of Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things - a limited Bob Clark horror that is steeped in 70's nostalgia. I added another SD release comparison to our 1963' Day of the Triffids webpage. It's not the news we are looking for - but it does further expose the poor state of the film on digital!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things BD - In Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, an above average slasher/horror film, a group of amateurs decide to experiment with witchcraft with deadly results. This film has a small cult following, due to some extent to the fact that one of the lead characters is played by writer and makeup effects artist Alan Ormsby. Ormsby gives one of the three or four most obnoxious screen performances in history as Alan, the leader of a troupe of actors who try out a voodoo ritual on a corpse only to find out that it has worked on all the corpses in the graveyard. The acting is terrible and the special effects are obvious and cheap, but the film somehow manages to overcome all of this and be quite entertaining, but only for those with strong stomachs. Blu-ray Release Date: February 23rd, 2016

Woman in the Moon BD - In this, Lang’s final silent epic, the legendary filmmaker spins a tale involving a wicked cartel of spies who co-opt an experimental mission to the moon in the hope of plundering the satellite’s vast (and highly theoretical) stores of gold. When the crew, helmed by Willy Fritsch and Gerda Maurus (both of whom had previously starred in Lang’s Spione), finally reach their impossible destination, they find themselves stranded in a lunar labyrinth without walls — where emotions run scattershot, and the new goal becomes survival. Kino Blu-ray Release Date: February 23rd, 2016

Spione (Spies) BD - Newly restored to its original length, Fritz Lang's penultimate silent film, Spione [Spies], is a flawlessly constructed labyrinthine spy thriller. Hugely influential, Lang's famous passion for meticulous detail combines with masterful storytelling and editing skills to form a relentless story of intrigue, espionage, and blackmail. Kino Blu-ray Release Date: February 23rd, 2016

The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum BD - Not the best known of Kenji Mizoguchi's period masterpieces, but conceivably the greatest (1939). The plot, which oddly resembles that of There's No Business Like Show Business, concerns the rebellious son of a theatrical family devoted to Kabuki who leaves home for many years, perfects his art, aided by a working-class woman who loves him, and eventually returns. Apart from the highly charged and adroitly edited Kabuki sequences, the film is mainly constructed in extremely long takes, and an intricate rhyme structure between the two time periods is developed by matching camera angles in the same locations. Never before nor after (with the possible exception of The 47 Ronin) would Mizoguchi's refusal to use close-ups have more telling effect, and the theme of female sacrifice that informs most of his major works is given a singular resonance and complexity here. Blu-ray release date: January 6th, 2016

The Mutilator BD - When Ed receives a message from his father asking him to go and lock up the family s beach condo for the winter, it seems like the perfect excuse for an alcohol-fuelled few days away with his friends. After all, his dad has forgiven him for accidentally blowing mom away with a shotgun several years ago... hasn t he? But no sooner are the teens on the island than they find themselves stalked by a figure with an axe (and a hook, and an onboard motor) to grind... Blu-ray Release date: February 15th-16th, 2016

The Magnificent Ambersons BD - Orson Welles' followup to Citizen Kane (1941) was utterly different from Kane in style and texture, but just as brilliant in its own way. Writer/director Welles does not appear on camera, but his voiceover narration superbly sets the stage for the movie's action, which fades in valentine fashion on Amberson Mansion, the most ostentatious dwelling in all of turn-of-century Indianapolis. Its mistress is the haughtily beautiful Isabel Amberson (Dolores Costello). When Isabel's beau, erstwhile inventor Eugene Morgan (Joseph Cotten), inadvertently humiliates her in public, she breaks off the relationship and marries colorless Wilbur Minafer (Donald Dillaway). Blu-ray release date: January 29th, 2016

Day of the Triffids - Adapted from the novel by John Wyndham, this intelligent British monster movie begins with a meteor shower so intensely bright that it blinds the majority of the world's population, rendering them vulnerable to attack from hordes of carnivorous plants known as "Triffidus Celestus" grown from meteor-borne spores. As the plant-monsters continue to multiply and seek human prey, the remaining sighted people join forces to combat the veggie invaders. One such survivor, an American seaman (Howard Keel) whose eyes were bandaged during the meteorite impact, battles his way through the Triffid ranks. Meanwhile, a couple (Kieron Moore and Janette Scott are trapped in a lighthouse. Good production values make this low-budget effort look more expensive than it probably was; the uncredited assistance of Freddie Francis -- who directed several scenes with a second unit -- also helps. Second Sight DVD Release Date: April 2nd, 2001
