ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Raul Ruiz’s Mysteries of Lisbon has reached Blu-ray of the week status. A pure masterpiece. A not-so-far-off second if Godard's Film Socialisme - a visual extravaganza that is pristine in 1080P. I also loved Criterion's textured The Moment of Truth - strongly recommended! Alex Cox' Sid and Nancy is always enjoyable to revisit and is a definite improvement via Blu-ray. On DVD, Captain Nemo and the Underwater City evokes childhood memories with The Last Dinosaur not achieving similar. Eric covers a lot this week including the acclaimed Putty Hill (that had mention in our 2001 Poll.) The Devil Within Her with Joan Collins sounds intriguing for horror fans. I am less enthused by titles like Satan's Blood and Punished but Nothing But the Night sounds like it may have some appeal. Enjoy!!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Mysteries of Lisbon BD - Raul Ruiz’s masterful adaptation of the eponymous nineteenth-century Portuguese novel (by Camilo Castelo Branco) evokes the complex intertwined narratives of Victor Hugo and Charles Dickens. The core story centers on Joao, the bastard child of an ill-fated romance between two members of the aristocracy who are forbidden to marry, and his quest to discover the truth of his parentage. But this is just the start of an engrossing tale that follows a multitude of characters whose fates conjoin, separate and then rejoin again over three decades in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. Blu-ray Release date: January 17th, 2011

Captain Nemo and the Underwater City - Oscar-nominee Robert Ryan ("The Wild Bunch," "Crossfire") plays Captain Nemo, the infamous submarine captain. The Captain rescues six shipwreck survivors and brings them to his underwater fortress, where they may be trapped for the rest of their lives. Nanette Newman ("The Wrong Box") and Chuck Connors ("Soylent Green," "Old Yeller") co-star in this fantasy-adventure. Enjoyable for the entire family. Directed by Oscar-winner James Hill. DVD Release Date: March 23rd, 2009

The Last Dinosaur - "It eats meat! Us!!" It is a Tyrannosaurus, ruler of a lost world hidden within a dormant polar volcano. Us are members of expedition led by a big game hunter and uberzillionaire (Richard Boone). And eats - well, you get the idea, tyrant lizard fans! Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass, who charmed families with The Year Without a Santa Claus and more animated and stop-motion holiday heartwarmers, relied on dinomight for The Last Dinosaur, the sort of thrill-a-minute popcorn-seller that gives bad movies a good name. Join the adventurers as they encounter a perilous array of prehistoric beasts, a tribe of savage cavemen and a T. rex who, despite its less-than-special effect appearance, can kick some serious Triceratops butt. DVD Release Date: March 22nd, 2011

The Moment of Truth BD - The Moment of Truth (Il momento della verità), from director Francesco Rosi, is a visceral plunge into the life of a famous torero—played by real-life bullfighting legend Miguel Mateo, known as Miguelín. Charting his rise and fall with a single-minded focus on the bloody business at hand, the film is at once gritty and operatic, placing the viewer right in the thick of the ring’s action, as close to death as possible. Like all of the great Italian truth seeker’s films, this is not just an electrifying drama but also a profound and moving inquiry into a violent world—and it’s perhaps the greatest bullfighting movie ever made.
Blu-ray Release date: January 24th, 2011

Satan's Blood - Terror, sex and Satanic rituals are on a one-way ride to Hell in Satan's Blood, one of the most horrific and sexiest thrillers from Spain! In this occult chiller, Andy and Anna are a bored couple who decide to go for a drive in the country. On the way, they meet another couple who claim to know them from many years before. Despite their uncertainty, Andy and Anna agree to visit the mysterious couple's country house and end up staying the night. DVD Release Date: November 8th, 2011

Nothing But the Night - Already three trustees of the Van Traylen fund have died during the last months, looking like suicides. However after a mysterious accident of a bus with the last three trustees and 30 orphan kids in it, police colonel Bingham starts investigating. First question is, how came that the dead bus driver is burnt when there was no fire during the accident? Dr. Ashley uses hypnosis to find the truth about the mysterious happenings. DVD Release Date: October 18th, 2011

Punished - The story centers on real estate tycoon Wong Ho-Chiu. While sheltered in the luxurious trappings afforded by his wealth and power, he suffers an unbearable loss when his daughter Daisy is kidnapped and killed: a victim of her decadent lifestyle and cocaine addiction. Wong Ho-Chiu turns to his trusted bodyguard Chor to seek out the perpetrators and exact revenge. Chor does his employer's bidding with an unflinching determination and scarcely contained rage thinly hidden beneath the surface. Wong Ho-Chiu goes one step further and orders Chor to videotape each of their executions, an order to which he complies, revealing the depths of depravity to which he will sink to match hand with his former underworld brethren in his quest for revenge. DVD Release Date: January 24th 2012

Film Socialisme BD - Legendary director Jean-Luc Godard (Breathless) returns to the screen with Film Socialisme, a magisterial essay on the decline of European Civilization. As a garish cruise ship travels the Mediterranean (with rock legend Patti Smith among its guests), Godard embarks on a state of the EU address in a vibrant collage of philosophical quotes, historical revelations and pure cinematographic beauty.
Blu-ray Release date: January 10th, 2012

Sid and Nancy BD - 'A lacerating love story', Sid & Nancy chronicles the brief, intense attachment of two of punk’s most notorious poster children, Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. Director Alex Cox balances a bleak evocation of star-crossed love with surreal humor and genuine tenderness, creating a compelling portrait of the late ’70s punk scene. With brilliant performances by Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb, the film’s haunting imagery and black comedy resonate long after the final frames.
Blu-ray Release Date: December 27th, 2011

Putty Hill - A beautifully realized portrait of a close-knit community on the outskirts of Baltimore, Putty Hill is the second feature from celebrated young filmmaker Matt Porterfield. At a neighborhood karaoke bar, friends and family gather to remember a young man who passed away. Knowing little about his final days, they attempt to reconstruct his life. In the process, they offer a window onto their own lives, an evocative picture of working-class America, dislocated from the progress and mobility around them, but united in pursuit of a shared dream. Exquisitely shot and employing surprising documentary techniques, Putty Hill is one of the most exciting American indie films in years. DVD Release Date: November 8th, 2011

The Devil Within Her - Former stripper Lucy Carlesi (Joan Collins, QUEST FOR LOVE) gives birth to Nicholas, an unusually strong child who scratches the new mother the first time she picks him up. When she and her husband Gino (Ralph Bates, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE) return home, things get worse. The child bites the housekeeper Mrs. Hyde (Hilary Mason, DON'T LOOK NOW) and tries to drown nanny Jill (Janet Key, THE VAMPIRE LOVERS), and demolishes his nursery. Lucy is convinced that the child hates her while Gino confides in the child's doctor Finch (Donald Pleasance, HALLOWEEN) who believes that Lucy is stressed and that Nicholas may possibly have a genetic condition. Since Lucy and Gino have healthy family backgrounds, Lucy suspects that the child may actually have been fathered by strip-club owner Tommy (John Steiner, SALON KITTY) and that the aggression has a supernatural cause since her spurned midget partner Hercules (George Claydon, BERSERK) cursed her to have a child possessed by the devil. DVD Release Date: September 20th, 2011
