ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Almost impossible to choose one highlight this week but if forced I'll propose a tie between Erle C. Kenton's Island of Lost Souls on Criterion Blu-ray and Francis Ford Coppola’s contemplative mystery/thriller The Conversation - also in 1080P. It wouldn't be DVDBeaver if we didn't give heavy exposure to an Antonioni film - now available on Blu-ray for the first time; Identification of a Woman is an enigmatic gem largely forgotten in the director's ironically respected oeuvre. Scorsese's relentless and intense remake of Cape Fear looks extremely impressive in the new format - for an exhaustive night in the Home Theater. Douglas Trumbull's Silent Running has an odd appeal - a thinking man's space-adventure with environmentalism a major theme. Masters of Cinema have created a solid package with plenty of supplements. Veering to more mainstream - I'm still a fan of Senor Spielbergo's Jurassic Park and despite some digital tinkering on the visual front gives a good presentation on Blu-ray. It's hard not to find multiple positives about Captain America: The First Avenger - a nostalgic battle and unassuming hero against WW2 baddies. Fulci's precisely-made The House by the Cemetery has more gore per frame than any film this reviewer can recall - a pure Giallo classic looking exponentially better in HD from Blue Underground. Under Suspicion has a noirish aura about a private eye who gets in too deep, The Crow remains a dark brooding revenge fantasy that offers good value and, unfortunately Tornatore's Baarìa doesn't get the treatment it deserves on Blu-ray. The films is worthy of much more. DVD offers a voyeuristic prison pic from Demark, entitled simply 'R' that would scare any would-be criminal permanently straight. Criterion throws us some humor-filled joy with Eclipse Series 29: Aki Kaurismaki's Leningrad Cowboys. Eric has reviewed Ordinary People which embodies the universal struggle of all soldiers to reconcile morality with service - as well as another Global Film Initiative The Shaft. Gregory covers Budd Boetticher's The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond as well a Bona-fide Joseph H. Lewis' Noir in The Undercover Man. I toast your week's incredible successes!

The House by the Cemetery BD - Norman Boyle (Paolo Malco, THE SCORPION WITH TWO TAILS), along with his wife Lucy (Catriona MacColl, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD) and son Bob (Giovanni Frezza, A BLADE IN THE DARK), leaves New York for the sleepy New England town of New Whitby to continue the research of a colleague who murdered his mistress and then hanged himself. They have rented the creaky Oaks Mansion, with its mysterious locked basement, a tombstone in he middle of the living room floor, and a slinky babysitter (Ania Pieroni, INFERNO) who job description also includes mopping up puddles of blood and making coffee. Norman discovers his late colleague's research took a tangential turn into the life of the house's previous resident, one Dr. Jacob Tess Freudstein who was expelled from the medical community for his experiments in cell regeneration. Blu-ray Release Date: October 24th, 2011

Jurassic Park BD - The synopsis of Jurassic Park is that former flea circus sideshow man John Hamilton (Richard Attenborough) has put a scientific theory into practical development. On an Costa Rican island he has created a 'biological preserve' filled with cloned dinosaurs that he intends to exhibit to the public in a 'theme park'. Nature cannot be controlled and the dinosaurs run amok when the security system is sabotaged. What is created is one of the most successful films in the history of cinema and I am not immune to its charms. Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park is a wonderful joyride of science-fiction, boy-hood fantasy and wholesome suspenseful adventure - all while exposing the potential encompassing pratfalls of our own scientific abilities. Blu-ray Release Date: October 25th, 2011

Silent Running BD - With its remarkable special effects (especially the robot drones Huey, Dewey, and Louie); glorious score (including songs performed by Joan Baez); memorable sound effects (created by Joseph Byrd from the cult band The United States of America); a screenplay co-written by Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter) and Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues), and an impassioned central performance from Dern, Silent Running remains a uniquely contemplative and haunting adventure that continues to make hippies of young children, even today. Blu-ray Release date: November 14th, 2011

Captain America: The First Avenger BD - Captain America leads the fight for freedom in the action-packed blockbuster starring Chris Evans as the ultimate weapon against evil! When a terrifying force threatens everyone across the globe, the world’s greatest soldier wages war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving, The Matrix). Eclipse Series 29: Aki Kaurismaki's Leningrad Cowboys - In the late eighties, Aki Kaurismäki, a master of the deadpan, fashioned a waggish fish-out-of-water tale about a U.S. tour by “the worst rock-and-roll band in the world.” Leningrad Cowboys Go America’s posse of fur-coated, outrageously pompadoured hipsters struck such a chord with international audiences that the fictional band became a genuine attraction, touring the world. Later, Kaurismäki created a sequel, Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses, and filmed a gigantic outdoor concert that the band put on in Helsinki, for the rollicking documentary Total Balalaika Show. With this Eclipse series, we present all three crackpot musical and comic odysseys, along with five Leningrad Cowboys music videos also directed by Kaurismäki. DVD Release Date: October 18th, 2011

The Shaft - THE SHAFT tells the intertwined stories of three members of a family in a small village where the only destiny seems to be working for the mine. As a woman working for the mine's security office, miserable Ding Jingshui (Zheng Louqian) is subject to various rumors about how she got the job, including one that she is having an affair with the manager. Her aunt wants her to leave the town and meet a wealthy husband in the city, but she wants a better life for herself and her miner boyfriend Song Daming (Li Chen, ASSEMBLY). DVD Release Date: September 20th, 2011

The Devil's Kiss - The extravagant Duke de Haussemont (Jose Nieto, FRANKENSTEIN'S BLOODY TERROR) throws a fashion show and has invited Claire Grandier (Silvia Solar, THE WEREWOLF AND THE YETI) to conduct a surprise seance. Claire is the former Countess of Moncoran, whose husband killed himself after his family fortune's dwindled and the duke's late brother bought up his stables. Now, she has gone back to her maiden name and lives in anonymity as a spiritualist in collaboration with Dr. Gruber (Olivier Mathot, REVENGE IN THE HOUSE OF USHER) who has been experimenting with cell regeneration and also possesses powers of telepathy. The Conversation BD - Francis Ford Coppola’s provoking mystery/thriller stars Gene Hackman as Harry Caul, an expert surveillance man. A routine wiretapping job turns into a nightmare when Harry hears something disturbing in his recording of a young couple in a park. His investigation of the tape and how it might be used sends Harry spiraling into a web of secrecy, murder and paranoia. Set against the backdrop of San Francisco, THE CONVERSATION is a harrowing psychological thriller that costars Cindy Williams, Frederic Forrest and Harrison Ford and symbolizes the uneasy line where technology and privacy cross. Identification of a Woman BD - Antonioni is of course best known for such films as "Blow Up", "L'avventura", "The Red Desert", and "The Passenger"." I have been asked the question: "Isn't this one of Antonioni's minor works?" The purpose of this brief article is to argue the contrary and urge lovers of his films to take this one very seriously. It is incredibly rich and not in any way second class in comparison to his other great works. Blu-ray Release Date: October 25th, 2011

Island of Lost Souls BD - A twisted treasure from Hollywood’s pre-Code horror heyday, Island of Lost Souls is a cautionary tale of science run amok, adapted from H. G. Wells’s novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. In one of his first major movie roles, Charles Laughton is a mad doctor conducting ghastly genetic experiments on a remote island in the South Seas, much to the fear and disgust of the shipwrecked sailor (Richard Arlen) who finds himself trapped there. This touchstone of movie terror, directed by Erle C. Kenton, features expressionistic photography by Karl Struss, groundbreaking makeup effects that have inspired generations of monster-movie artists, and the legendary Bela Lugosi in one of his most gruesome roles. Blu-ray Release Date: October 25th, 2011

R - The prisoner R arrives to Denmark’s toughest prison, where he’s to serve his sentence for a violent assault. R is reduced to a number, a letter, and just another inmate. The prison is a parallel world filled with rules, honor, and debts. A world, in which bars cover the windows and blood stains the floor. R is placed in the most hardcore ward. Here he must find his place in the system, learn to navigate, and fight for survival. This New York Times Critic’s Pick was directed Michael Noer and Tobias Lindholm, both making their feature-film debuts. DVD Release Date: October 18th, 2011

Ordinary People - Dzoni (Relja Popovic), a young recruit, is one of seven soldiers bussed out into the placid Serbian countryside for an unknown mission. As the new guy, Dzoni is estranged from the other soldiers who are more efficient and seem generally to be "in the know" and Dzoni is left wandering and puzzling out the ways in which to behave. Dzoni wakes from a nap to see a group of civilian men arriving. The commanding officer Narednik (Boris Isakovic) explains to Dzoni and the other men that they are "taking care" of the enemy and uses Dzoni in a demonstration of how to dispose of them. DVD Release Date: September 27th, 2011

Under Suspicion BD - Two people come together in a dangerous liaison turned deadly affair. This is the provocative premise for Under Suspicion, a brilliantly crafted thriller starring Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson (Best Actor in a Leading Role, Schindler's List, 1993) and Laura San Giacomo (Sex, Lies and Videotape). Tony Aaron (Neeson) is a private eye who makes his living setting up phony adultery cases with the help of his wife. But a routine set up fatally backfires when Tony's wife and his client – a wealthy artist– are murdered. At first, all clues point to the artist's mysterious mistress, Angeline (San Giacomo), but Tony is also named as a prime suspect. Both maintain their innocence, and guilt seems even harder to assign when the two plunge into a steamy, forbidden affair. One is guilty, the other is innocent - but the real killer might ultimately get away with murder. Blu-ray Release date: October 18th, 2011

The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond - The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond is Budd Boetticher's cold look at a cool customer. The low temperature extends to Lucien Ballard's crisply composed black-and-white cinematography and to Ray Danton's chilly assumption of the title role. With his `matinee-idol' looks and devil-may-care attitude, he prefigures another kind of `cool' that would arrive on screen a year or so later, that of James Bond. DVD Release Date: July 12th, 2011

Kenneyville - Private investigators Patrick (Dany Gehshan, ZOMBIE WEREWOLVES ATTACK!) and Megan (Vanessa Broze, THE DARKNESS) go undercover as Charlie and Kelly in search of Kim (Kelsey Oluk), a young woman who went missing in the Northern Ontario town of Kenneyville in the vicinity of a filtration plant. Posting as backpackers, they run into siblings Ben (Josef Malonzo, ROBODOC) and Victoria (Irena Angelousta) - who look nothing alike - who invite them back to their cabin for a drink. By phone, Victoria informs someone of the couple's presence. Patrick and Megan are creeped out by the siblings' jittery behavior - including Ben's warnings for them to get away quickly - and are about to leave when Marshall (Nick Maiorino) bursts in, beats Patrick unconscious, and abducts Megan and takes her to the mysterious Dr. Adrian Black... DVD Release Date: October 11th, 2011

The Undercover Man - [Glenn Ford]'s an undercover government agent; his worn-down wife, Nina Foch, joins him occasionally on his assignments but for the most part stays at home near Washington, D.C. where she's come to accept his extended absences with a long face. Ford and his partner James Whitmore find their frequently flipped Treasury credentials carry little weight in big-shouldered Chicago, where the syndicate's ruthlessness strikes witnesses blind and dumb even when victims are gunned down in broad daylight. DVD Release Date: April 19th, 2011

The Crow BD - Based on the graphic novel by James O'Barr, this fantasy follows Eric Draven (Brandon Lee), a rock musician who is murdered... along with his fiancée Shelly (Sofia Shinas) by a group of marauding thugs who terrorize the decaying city in which they live. One year to the day after his death (which happens to be Devil's Night), a mystical crow appears at Eric's grave; Eric rises from the dead and, with the bird as his guide, goes on a mission to avenge himself against Top Dollar (Michael Wincott), the leader of the gang who killed him. Star Brandon Lee was killed while filming a scene in which he was shot with a shell from an improperly cleaned gun that was supposed to be loaded with blanks. Like his father, martial arts superstar Bruce Lee, Brandon was fated to enjoy his greatest popular success after his premature death. Blu-ray Release Date: October 18th, 2011
