ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Some important packages this week starting with Artificial Eye's essential Classic Bergman Blu-ray set with 5 of the director's films transferred to 1080P status. The first "epic" western of the talkie era, Raoul Walsh's The Big Trail comes in a magnificent Blu-ray that includes the 4X3 35-millimeter and also the 65-mm "Fox Grandeur" wide-screen process. The Beatles’ classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, has been digitally restored and the Blu-ray release is a wonderful prize. Criterion have rendered Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps in a new Blu-ray package loaded with valuable supplements. Zorba the Greek is a tremendous film experience and Fox have justly given it a stellar a/v in their new Blu-ray. Strongly recommended! Scorsese's The Color of Money with Paul Newman revisiting his memorable role as Fast Eddie Felson from The Hustler. I'm a huge fans of Hoosiers and MGM have stepped-up the Blu-ray transfer to AVC from the first kick-at-the-can BD from 2007. An easy buy in my opinion. While I thrill to The Strange Love of Martha Ivers going Blu-ray. I slump that it is HD Cinema Classics - overly digitized but less heavy-handed than their previous discs. Noir fans should check out our comparison captures and make their own decisions. Gregory focused on some Warner Pre-Code Double Feature DVDs with Office Wife / Party Husband and another 2-film set with Dorothy Mackaill - a mainstay of the era who retired early. Eric covered Countess Perverse - a telling title if ever there was one - as well as the highly lauded Brazilian film The Tenants and drug drama Street Days - along with horror throw-away The House and cheesy action-er Chained: Code 207.... Peace!

The 39 Steps BD - A heart-racing spy story by Alfred Hitchcock, The 39 Steps follows Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) as he stumbles upon a conspiracy that thrusts him into a hectic chase across the Scottish moors—a chase in which he is both the pursuer and the pursued—as well as into an unexpected romance with the cool Pamela (Madeline Carroll). Adapted from a novel by John Buchan, this classic wrong-man thriller from the Master of Suspense anticipates the director’s most famous works (especially North by Northwest), and remains one of his cleverest and most entertaining films. Blu-ray Release Date: June 26th, 2012

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers BD - In Lewis Milestone's classic Film Noir we open in the rain - 1928, where a feisty young heiress named Martha Ivers is thwarted in her attempt to run off with her friend Sam Masterson - a street-smart kid from the wrong side of the tracks. Her forced return home and his fatal goodbye produce the inadvertent murder of her aunt covered up by Martha and her young gold-digging friend, Walter. Blu-ray Release Date: May 29th, 2012

The House - Tired of doing stories on prostitution and child abuse, Shalinee (Intira Jaroenpura, BROKEDOWN PALACE) jumps at the opportunity to do a story on Dr. Wasson (Worapong Nimwijitr) who is accused of murdering his wife, even though no body was discovered. Employees of the hospital where he worked refuses to speak to her, so she visits the house where Wasson and his wife lived. The groundskeeper throws her out, but not before Shalinee catches the image of a woman in one of the windows with her video camera. She starts to dream of the house and an apparition of a dead woman who warns her to stay away. With the help of her tax lawyer husband Nuri (Natthakan Thayutajaruwit) - who is pressing her to quit her job so they can start a family - Shalinee is able to enter the house where she is plagued by more gruesome apparitions. DVD Release Date: June 4th, 2012

The Color of Money BD - Experience legendary actor Paul Newman in the role that earned him an Academy Award (Best Actor, 1986, The Color Of Money). Newman joins Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) in Academy Award winning Martin Scorsese’s (Best Director, 2006, The Departed) brilliant and powerful drama, The Color Of Money – now available for the first time on Blu-ray with an astonishing digital transfer. Revisiting one of his most memorable roles, Newman stars as Fast Eddie Felson from The Hustler. Eddie forms a profitable alliance with the flashy and talented young pool shark Vince (Cruise), but all bets are off when Vince’s arrogance costs them more than just a few matches. Blu-ray Release date: June 5th, 2012

Zorba the Greek BD - Nominated for seven Academy Awardsr - including Best Picture - and Winner of three. In the role he was born to play, Oscarr Winner Anthony Quinn lights up the screen as Zorba, the lovable rogue with an insatiable lust for life. When shy Englishman, Basil (Alan Bates), lands on the Isle of Crete seeking his fortune, Zorba sets out to teach him the ways of the world...Zorba's world. Through it all, Basil learns there's only one way to deal with life's triumphs and tragedies - never stop dancing! Blu-ray Release date: June 5th, 2012

Hoosiers BD - One of the most rousingly enjoyable sports movies ever made, this small-town drama tells the story of the Hickory Huskers, an underdog basketball team from a tiny Indiana high school that makes it all the way to the state championship tournament. It's a familiar story, but sensitive direction and a splendid screenplay helped make this one of the best films of 1986, highlighted by the superb performances of Gene Hackman as the Huskers' coach, and Oscar nominee Dennis Hopper as the alcoholic father of one of the team's key players. As the drama unfolds we come to realize that many of the characters (including Barbara Hershey as a schoolteacher with whom Hackman falls in love) are recovering from disappointing setbacks, and this depth of character is what makes the otherwise conventional basketball story so richly rewarding. Blu-ray Release Date: June 5th, 2012

Yellow Submarine BD - The Beatles’ classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, has been digitally restored for DVD and Blu-ray release. Yellow Submarine is a fantastic tale brimming with peace, love, and hope, propelled by Beatles songs, including “Eleanor Rigby,” “When I’m Sixty-Four,” “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “All You Need Is Love,” and “It’s All Too Much.” When the film debuted in 1968, it was instantly recognised as a landmark achievement, revolutionising a genre by integrating the freestyle approach of the era with innovative animation techniques. The film has been restored in 4K digital resolution for the first time by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film’s restored photochemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame. Blu-ray Release Date: June 5th, 2012

The Big Trail BD - The first "epic" western of the talkie era, The Big Trail is motivated by a hero's search for the murderer of his father. Twenty-three-year-old John Wayne, hitherto limited to bit parts, was thrust into the difficult leading role, a young mountaineer put in charge of a huge California-bound wagon train. Over the next several months, Wayne and his fellow pioneers face every imaginable hazard and disaster, from blistering desert heat to blinding snowstorms, negotiating steep cliffs, treacherous rivers, uncharted forests and other such natural obstacles. Meanwhile, Wayne's tentative romance with heroine Ruth Cameron (Marguerite Churchill) is continually thwarted by a charming but duplicitous gambler (Ian Keith), and all-around villain Red Flack (Tyrone Power Sr.) and his henchman Lopez (Charlie Stevens) ceaselessly plot to double-cross the other wagon-trainers for their own financial gain. Blu-ray Release Date: May, 2012

Classic Bergman BD - Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) is considered one of the most accomplished and influential European arthouse film directors of all times, who left behind an incredibly rich body of work in the history of modern cinema. His films marked the beginning and end of an era, since he was capable of explicitly taking on fundamental questions in a way that cinema didn't achieve before him and has hardly done since. This 5 set contains a selection of films which cover two decades of the director's work; from his first period - a reflection of his concerns and life experiences - to his thriving époque – a mature work for which he attracted wide international attention. Blu-ray Release Date: June 7th, 2012

The Tenants - Despite a recent wave of violent crime in the city, manual laborer and night student Valter lives a relatively content life with his family in working-class Sao Paulo. But when three young criminals move in next door, a bunker mentality sets in and Valter soon discovers he is not the only one perversely affected by the mounting chaos of a city under siege, or the unsettling presence of his new neighbors. Building tension throughout with stylish sequences that blend reality and fevered imagination, Sergio Bianchi s gripping domestic thriller offers a shrewd portrait of the social and psychological impact of urban violence, depicting a community beset yet also aroused by a permeating atmosphere of destruction. Dorothy Mackaill - Pre-Code Double Feature - Once nearly forgotten, now dearly rediscovered, Dorothy Mackaill’s work is in the midst of a well deserved renaissance, and we are pleased to present a pair of films that will only add luster to her legend. Unforgettable film director Michael Curtiz puts Dorothy through her paces in Bright Lights (aka Adventures in Africa), the tale of a hoofer who hulas her way from sleazy dives to the Great White Way, only to end up facing murder charges when her past comes back to haunt her. Mackaill ably struts her ex-Ziegfeld stuff, singing and dancing alongside Noah Berry and Frank Fay. Dorothy’s The Office Wife co-star, blondacious Joan Blondell, once again slips into the role of younger sib, supporting her in this tale of stolen virtue. Shop model Margaret (Mackaill) catches the eye of wealthy, dapper young Allen (Walter Byron). Unfortunately the primrose path Margaret sees in her future is lined with the broken rocks of her virtue… DVD Release Date: February 28th, 2012

Office Wife / Party Husband - Early Talkie titanness Dorothy Mackaill stars in this steamy pairing of racy dramas that tested the limits of the censors - and of marriage! The Office Wife features Mackaill playing a “welcome danger to the tired businessman” while sharing the screen alongside a scene-stealing and clothes-shedding Joan Blondell (in her sophomore screen appearance!). Party Husband finds ex-Ziegfield Girl Dorothy playing the better half of a thoroughly “modern marriage” whose openness threatens to bring about its premature end. Fellow Ziegfield alum Mary Doran plays the coquette whose intended conquest of the free-thinking hubby (James Rennie) starts to throw the couple’s “understanding” awry. DVD Release Date: December 13th, 2011

Street Days - Heroin addict Checkie (Guga Kotetishvili) is arrested while trying to score and the police want him to entrap Ika (Irakli Ramishvili), the son of his more prosperous former classmate Zaza (Zura Sharia), now a politician. Although Checkie is reluctant to betray the young man, who has asked him to procure drugs for him even though he has never used them, Checkie's wife Nino (Rusiko Kobiashvili) cannot pay their child's school fees and they are in danger of losing their apartment (the police have promised to help his family, suggesting that their motive for entrapping the politician's son are less than noble). Checkie becomes even more conflicted about betraying Ika since the young man takes an active interest in trying to help out his financial situation (even though he hopes to profit as well). When Ika's father proves unwilling to help Checkie, Ika strikes upon the idea to kidnap and ransom the daughter of his father's best friend for a suspiciously meager amount that will take care of Checkie's financial troubles and score Ika his first hit of heroin. DVD Release Date: May 15th, 2012

Countess Perverse - A pair of decadent and debauched aristocrats turn their private island into a human hunting ground where they stalk their naked prey. The captured meat is then cooked and fed to their unsuspecting guests, who themselves will become the next victims of this cruel game. Starring the suave Howard Vernon (Seven Women for Satan) and the stunningly sexy Alice Arno (Justine de Sade), this is one of controversial director Jess Franco's most outrageous and delirious films. We present, for the first time ever the original restored director's cut, taken from the rare camera negative. Packed with sex, sleaze and outrageous behavoir, this is wicked entertainment of the most shocking kind. DVD Release Date: June 12th, 2012

Chained: Code 207 - When Army ranger Mack (writer/director Tino Struckmann, RED ROSE OF NORMANDY) busts a sex trafficker ring (who deal in black market organs [sealed in sandwich baggies] on the side), ringleader Savage (Jack Dimich, DON'T LOOK UP) kidnaps Mack's wife Tiffany (Tiffany Anne Hughes) in retaliation for the death of his brother. Detective Altman (Cole Schaefer) - obviously corrupt an in cahoots with the kidnappers from his first close-up - is no help to him or Ruth (Connie Maynord) whose daughter Haley (Claudia Crawford) has also been nabbed. Mack tracks down the kidnappers and wages a one man war against the enemy. Struckmann and the various baddies he tussles with are certainly athletic, but the camera and editing coverage of the fights is laughable. The bad acting, cartoon character villains (although Dimich is entertainingly over-the-top), and laughable action (complete with CGI gunfire) would work for fans of the lovably dumb eighties and nineties DTV action flicks were if not for the impression that star/director Struckmann was taking it all seriously (and apparently trying to seriously address the sexual exploitation of women since a portion of the film's profits supposedly went to womens shelters and organizations). DVD Release Date: May 15th, 2012
