directed by Zalman King
USA 1989
From director Zalman King (Two
Moon Junction) comes a tale of sex, passion and
erotic taboos set against the backdrop of the rich and
powerful. Set in the sultry splendor of Rio de Janeiro,
Wild Orchid stars Mickey Rourke (9
1/2 Weeks),
Jacqueline Bisset (Bullitt)
and supermodel Carre Otis in a ''torrid'' (Variety)
adventure of the senses. Filled with ''exotic settings''
(The Hollywood Reporter), it is a hypnotic odyssey that
will leave you breathless and spellbound. Beautiful young attorney Emily Reed (Otis) travels to Rio to work with international negotiator Claudia Lirones (Bisset) on a multi-million dollar deal. But once exposed to the raw sensuality of her surroundings, Emily is increasingly drawn into a world of erotic fantasy. Eager to guide Emily through this underworld is Claudia's old flame Wheeler (Rourke). Mysterious and seductive Wheeler unleashes Emily's most primitive desires... even as she threatens to unlock his world-weary heart. |

NOTE: The below
Blu-ray captures were
taken directly from the
Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Eureka - Region 'B' - Blu-ray (February 2016): The 'painful-to-watch' Wild Orchid gets a 1080P release in region 'B' but they add the 6 1/4 minute longer 'unrated' version - absent from the US Blu-ray edition (but previously available on the DVD) and include the R-rated - on one lone dual-layered Blu-ray. So what does that mean? Well, from 3 sources, there are four additional scenes in the R-Rated version, running approximately 0:45, and eight additional scenes in the Unrated version (over 5.5 minutes worth) and supposedly 1 slightly alternate scene between the two (no confirmation.) More nudity? sex? graphic naughty bits? It appears so but I'm not bothering to document it visually. The HD improves over the SD in the expected areas - warmer skin tones (lose the orange-ness and compression artifacts of the DVD), prevalent grain texture and occasional depth. The higher resolution looks significantly better. Eureka go linear PCM 2.0 channel at 2304 kbps (24-bit) and it sounds quite adept - the carnival-esque sounds are rich. The score is by Geoff MacCormack + Simon Goldenberg (their only feature film credit compositions). Of course the soundtrack has some Ofra Haza, Underworld and other mix-n-match music. No complaints about the uncompressed sound quality and the Blu-ray disc is region 'B'-locked. Only extra is a 4:3 trailer (unless you consider the other version an extra.) I only have the screener disc so there nay be some liner notes. I'm not sure. The only saving grace of the film is Miss Bisset - but her screen time is, unfortunately, limited. With a glance she shows the difference between real star power and blank-faced wannabes. The Eureka Blu-ray is the way to go if you insist on seeing this... - Gary Tooze |
