ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Great week offering 60's era films and I thoroughly enjoyed Robert Wise's 1963 The Haunting Blu-ray - a truly chilling experience and perfect for the Halloween fright night! Shout! Factory's The Vincent Price Collection adds plenty of fuel for the end of the month's festivities. Usher, Phibes, Pendulum, Masque are all masterful horror films. This is a great collection - bordering on essential. I don't know how many times I've seen Fantastic Voyage but the Blu-ray gave, by far, the best presentation and the film's unique story and visuals never get tiresome. A little hokier but still carrying pleasing nostalgia is Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea -imperfect but good family boyhood-adventure fun. John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness has a very interesting premise and has some of the director's trademark spooky appeal. On DVD Eric covered Maison Close - Season Two has ,more exploits of the girls of 'Le Paradis' brothel. See you next week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Vincent Price Collection BD - 4 disc/ 6 films - Fall of the House of Usher (1960): A brooding nobleman is haunted by the dry rot of madness in his family tree. The Haunted Palace (1963): A man arrives at a small village to visit the house he inherited from his ancestor who died there 100 years ago. The Masque of the Red Death (1964): A European prince terrorizes the local peasantry while using his castle as a refuge against the "Red Death" plague that stalks the land. The Pit and the Pendulum (1961): A 16th century Spanish nobleman who thinks that his wife has been buried alive begins to go insane and commits murder. Witchfinder General (1968): A 17th-century British witch hunter terrorizes people and bends them to his will. The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971): A doctor/ scientist/organist/biblical scholar seeks revenge on the nine doctors he considers responsible for his wife's death. Blu-ray Release Date: October 22nd, 2013

Maison Close - Season Two - The girls of 'Le Paradis' are back and hotter than ever! The brothel, 'Le Paradis', now collectively managed by its prostitutes, enjoys a period of commercial success once again. However the Paris vice squad wants to put an end to that revived utopia and pushes for a return to public morality. Hortense, Rose and Véra must ally themselves with a young and flamboyant Parisian gangster who takes the opportunity to establish his quarters in the brothel. DVD Release Date: August 19th, 2013

The Haunting BD - No one lives in the 90-year-old Hill House. Or so it seems. But come in. Even if you don't believe in ghosts, there's no denying the terror of The Haunting. Robert Wise, whose started his directorial career with The Curse of the Cat People (1944), returned to psychological horror for this first screen adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. Four people (Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn) come to the house to study its supernatural phenomena. Or has the house drawn at least one of them to it? The answer will unnerve you. Blu-ray Release date: October 15th, 2013

In the Mouth of Madness BD - Hired to help locate a missing author, an insurance investigator discovers to his terror that the nightmarish events depicted in the writer's best-selling horror novels are coming true. Wishing to be both a horror film and a parody of the genre, John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness combines supernatural thrills with winking references. For instance, the vanished author, Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow), is modeled on writers like Stephen King and Howard Phillips Lovecraft, from his great popularity to his obsession with small-town New England. Indeed, it is to one such hamlet that investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) and Cane's female editor (Julie Carmen) travel, discovering a town filled with terrifying scenes right out of Cane's books, from random axe murders to far worse. Have Cane's fans gone psychotic and begun imitating his writings, or are Cane's stories of an otherworldly evil invading the earth actually true? In the Mouth of Madness's mix of self-referential satire and real frights anticipates the later Scream (1996). Blu-ray Release date: October 15th, 2013

Fantastic Voyage BD - Stephen Boyd heads a team of scientists sent on a bizarre experimental mission. Through a revolutionary and as-yet-untested process, the scientists and their special motorized vehicle are miniaturized, then injected into the blood stream of a near-death scientist (Jean del Val). Their mission is to relieve a blood clot caused by an assassination attempt. One member of the expedition is bent on sabotage so that the scientist's secrets will die with him. Another member is Raquel Welch, seemingly along for the ride solely because of how she looks in a skintight diving suit. The film's Oscar-winning visual effects (by Art Cruickshank) chart the progress of the voyagers through the scientist's body, burrowing past deadly antibodies, chunks of tobacco residue in the lungs, and other such obstacles. Blu-ray Release date: October 8th, 2013

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea BD - Walter Pidgeon is the nominal star of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, portraying Admiral Harriman Nelson, the designer of the submarine Seaview, a glass-nosed research submarine. The sub embarks on her shakedown cruise under the polar ice cap as the movie begins. Upon surfacing, however, the crew discovers that the entire sky is on fire -- the Van Allen radiation belt has been ignited by a freak meteor shower, and the Earth is being slowly burnt to a cinder. Nelson and his colleague, Commodore Lucius Emery (Peter Lorre), devise a plan to extinguish the belt using one of the Seaview's nuclear missiles, but they are denounced at an emergency meeting of the United Nations. Disregarding the UN vote against him, Nelson decides to go forward with his plan before the Earth is destroyed, hoping to get the approval of the president of the United States while his ship races from New York to the Marianas in the Pacific to launch its missile on time and target, with the world's navies hunting her down and communication with Washington impossible because of the fire in the sky.
