ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Some great films this week on Blu-ray with Criterion's The Four Feathers 1080P transfer advancing the incredible film substantially beyond the old MGM interlaced DVD. Although modest on Blu-ray Manoel de Oliveira's The Strange Case of Angelica is a must-see film for fans of the director's deliberately paced work. Quentin Tarantino’s highly lauded Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown - derived from the character driven Elmore Leonard novel - both get the bump to the new format via Lionsgate/Miramax. Scott Frank’s The Lookout is solid and entertaining film experience and the bastardization of the aspect ratio can be compared in our Blu-ray to Blu-ray comparison. I liked Amer - an 'eroticized homage to 1970s Italian Giallo horror films' that has many visual impressions through the Blu-ray format. I saw some positives in Matthew Chapman's The Ledge but I am not keen on the Cannibal Holocaust genre. Lightening our emotional load we have Our Beloved Month of August on Second Run DVD and we strongly endorse but Treasures 5: The West, 1898-1938 also has incredible value as a '10-hour set celebrating the dynamic, gender-bending, ethnically diverse West that flourished in early movies'. We recommend the older Anchor Bay edition but C.H.U.D. is still a fun creature feature. Gregory has exposed another Alpha release of an important Noir film in his review of The Second Woman. Eric has covered two Code Red Double Features with a Detective Double Bill and a similar Espionage Double Bill.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Cannibal Holocaust BD - NYU anthropologist Harold Monroe (Robert Kerman, SPIDERMAN) leads a rescue mission into the Amazon to track down four young documentary filmmakers - director Alan Yates (Carl Gabriel Yorke, IDLE HANDS), script girl Faye Daniels (Francesca Ciardi, FAREWELL MOSCOW), and cameramen Jack Anders (Perry Pirkanen, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD), and Mark Tamoso (Luca Barbareschi, THE INTERNATIONAL) - and their guide who went in search of the Yacumo, or "tree people" and never returned. Blu-ray Release Date: September 26th, 2011

The Four Feathers BD - This Technicolor spectacular, directed by Zoltán Korda, is considered the finest of the many adaptations of A. E. W. Mason’s classic 1902 adventure novel about the British empire’s exploits in Africa, and a crowning achievement of Alexander Korda’s legendary production company, London Films. Set at the end of the nineteenth century, The Four Feathers follows the travails of a young officer (John Clements) accused of cowardice after he resigns his post on the eve of a major deployment to Khartoum; he must then fight to redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow officers (including Ralph Richardson) and fiancée (June Duprez). Featuring music by Miklós Rózsa and Oscar-nominated cinematography by Georges Périnal and Osmond Borradaile, The Four Feathers is a thrilling, thunderous epic. Blu-ray Release Date: October 11th, 2011

Our Beloved Month of August - A tantalizing mix of documentary, fiction and everything in between, Miguel Gomes' multi-award-winning love song to rural Portugal is an intoxicating blend of visuals, sound and music. Gorgeously photographed it set one's eyes ablaze and toes tapping, but Gomes goes further to work the brain as a narrative slowly, sneakily emerges out of the (seeming) documentary melody-making. DVD Release Date: September 26th, 2011

Jackie Brown BD - Combining an explosive mix of intense action and edgy humor with a sizzling all-star cast, director Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction) scores with the entertaining Jackie Brown. What do a sexy stewardess (Pam Grier), a street-tough gun runner (Samuel L. Jackson), a lonely bail bondsman (Robert Forster), a shifty ex-con (Robert De Niro), an earnest federal agent (Michael Keaton) and a stoned-out beach bunny (Bridget Fonda) have in common? They're six players on the trail of a half million dollars in cash! The only questions are... who's going to get played... and who's going to make the big score? Blu-ray Release Date: October 4th, 2011

Pulp Fiction BD - “Nothing less than a cultural phenomenon” (Moviemaker Magazine), Quentin Tarantino’s PULP FICTION has been hailed by critics and audiences worldwide as a film that redefined cinema. Tarantino delivers an unforgettable cast of characters – including a pair of low-rent hit men (John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson), their boss’s sexy wife (Uma Thurman) and a desperate prizefighter (Bruce Willis) – in a wildly entertaining and exhilarating blend of crime-thriller-drama-comedy that is completely original and entirely unforgettable. Nominated for 7 Academy Awards® including Best Picture and Best Director, PULP FICTION packs the punch like an adrenaline shot to the heart. Blu-ray Release Date: October 4th, 2011

Amer BD - An eroticized homage to 1970s Italian giallo horror films… Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s pastiche tour-de-force plays out a delirious, enigmatic, almost wordless death-dance of fear and desire. Its three movements, each in a different style, correspond to the childhood, adolescence, and adulthood of its female protagonist. Drawing its stylized, hyperbolic gestures from the playbooks of Bava, Leone, Argento and De Palma and taking them into a realm of near-abstraction. Amer has genre in the blood. Its bold widescreen composition, super-focused sound and emphatic music (lifted from original giallo soundtracks), and razor-sharp cuts make for an outrageous and intoxicating cinematic head-trip. Featuring music from composers Stelvio Cipriani, Bruno Nicolai and the legendary Ennio Morricone. Blu-ray Release date: October 4th, 2011

The Strange Case of Angelica BD - The new film from master filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira, The Strange Case of Angelica is a magical tale of a young photographer who falls madly in love with a woman he can never have, except in his dreams. Late one night, Isaac is summoned by a wealthy family to take the last photograph of a young bride, Angelica, who mysteriously passed away. Arriving at their estate, Isaac is struck by Angelica s beauty. But when he looks through his lens, the young woman appears to come to life. From that moment, Isaac will be haunted by Angelica day and night. Blu-ray Release date: September 20th, 2011

Treasures 5: The West, 1898-1938 - Before High Noon, Unforgiven, and True Grit, there was a wilder, wider West on film. Treasures from the American Film Archives: Volume 5: The West (1898-1938), is a 10-hour set celebrating the dynamic, gender-bending, ethnically diverse West that flourished in early movies but has never before been seen on video. DVD Release Date: September 26th, 2011

C.H.U.D. - Beneath the streets of New York city, there are hundreds of miles of subterranean tunnels unfit for anything human, unauthorized for anything experimental and unlikely to come to the surface...until now. Something horrible is loose in the sewers of Manhattan, and the city’s homeless population has begun to mutate into ‘Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers.’ They are C.H.U.D. - hideous, hungry and headed for the streets. John Heard, Daniel Stern and Kim Greist star in this wildly original horror shocker, filmed on (and below) the streets of New York City where hundreds of tourists every year are still devoured by actual C.H.U.D. . DVD Release Date: September 27th, 2011

The Lookout BD - The Lookout marks Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter Scott Frank’s ("Out of Sight"), directorial debut. The intelligent... crime drama is centered around Chris, a once promising high school athlete whose life is turned upside down following a tragic accident. As he tries to maintain a normal life, he takes a job as a janitor at a bank where he ultimately finds himself caught up in a planned heist. Echo Bridge Blu-ray Release date: August 9th, 2011

Detective Double Bill - John Marley is BLADE, a Dirty Harry-wannabe fighting a "psycho-karate killer who brutalizes his victims AND YOUR EMOTIONS" while Franco Nero is a menace to society, "but it's okay, 'cause he's a cop" in RING OF DEATH (aka UN DETECTIVE aka DETECTIVE BELLI), the two films on Code Red's DETECTIVE DOUBLE BILL. Jon Cypher, Keene Curtis, and Joe Santos also star in BLADE, while RING OF DEATH features Florinda Bolkan, Marino Mase, Adolfo Celi, Maurizio Bonuglia, and Roberto Bisacco. DVD Release Date: August 16th, 2011

Espionage Double Bill - Stoney (1969) Caught up in an international mishmash of espionage and double crosses in the Philippines, two gunrunners hunt for buried treasure and are disrupted by the quest for the same woman. The Killer Likes Candy (1968) Shrewd and evasive ex-Nazi and top assassin Oscar Snell is determined to rub out the King of Kafiristan. His sole weakness is his sweet tooth; he leaves candy wrappers at the scene of every crime. It’s up to no nonsense CIA agent Mark Stone to find Snell and stop him before it’s too late. DVD Release Date: August 16th, 2011

The Second Woman - A better-than-average psychological thriller, The Second Woman blends aspects of Rebecca and Gaslight into a savvy, neo-Gothic style (there's even an ultramodern, Manderley-like pile of memories high above the crashing ocean; it, too, ends in conflagration). Robert Young plays a young architect who can't wriggle out from under a jinx. The night before their wedding, a car crash claimed the life of his fiancée, for whom he'd built the cantilevered "house with wings." Now it's a mausoleum where he broods to the Tchaikovsky on the sound track. Lapses of memory and moody episodes undermine his work. His horse, his dog, even his prize rosebush die mysteriously. He's sinking, an object of pity and, increasingly, apprehension. DVD Release Date: April 15th, 2003

Blood Runs Cold - After the first year in her new career, singer Winona heads back to her home town for a few weeks to wind down and find inspiration to write new songs. She finally settles into a house her manager has rented for her, but becomes disturbed by the unsettling noises. When she meets some old friends in town she invites them over to keep her company. At the same time, something remains awake in the house at all times, roaming the corridors, waiting, watching them for the right time to strike. Scary and shocking, Blood Runs Cold has been officially selected for the 2011 Frightfest Film Festival. DVD Release Date: October 3rd, 2011

The Ledge BD - Gavin (Charlie Hunnam, Cold Mountain) is on the ledge. Hollis (Terrence Howard, Crash), who just learned that he is not the biological father of his children, is tasked with talking Gavin down. Their conversation eventually reveals Gavin s deep-rooted conflict with his fundamentalist Christian neighbor Joe (Patrick Wilson, Watchmen), whose theological opposition to Gavin was intensified by Gavin s gay roommate and later by Joe s wife's infidelity. The negotiations take a drastic turn when Hollis learns that Gavin has a deadline, and his life is not the only one hanging in the balance. Writer/director Matthew Chapman (Runaway Jury) returns after a long hiatus to helm this unpredictable thriller that asks challenging questions about faith and reason; the nature of belief; and the value of human life. Blu-ray Release date: September 27th, 2011
