ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I was moved by Paul Schrader's Hardcore this week - another potent performance by George C. Scott of a disturbing topic and a typically solid Blu-ray from Twilight Time. I was also very keen on Arrow's Woody Allen Blu-rays I reviewed; Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask and one of my favorites, Love and Death. Both brilliant comedies in stellar 1080P transfers. Criterion take on both Valley of the Dolls and, sequel in name only, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls for stacked Blu-ray packages of the enigmatic and wildly different films. Two Giallos get covered - Dario Argento's classic of the genre Tenebrae on impressive Blu-ray from Synapse Films and one of Mario Bava's better efforts, Hatchet for the Honeymoon on Blu-ray from Wicked Vision. Yet another horror gets a Blu-ray release - Stigmata - a creepy take on the physical body affliction associated with the Roman Catholic faith. The 1999 film has some positives if you are in the mood.:

Love and Death BD - Woody Allen's Love and Death is purportedly a satire of all things Russian, from Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky novels to Sergei Eisenstein films, but it plays more like a spin on Bob Hope's Monsieur Beaucaire. Allen plays Boris, a 19th century Russian who falls in love with his distant (and married) cousin Sonja (Diane Keaton). Pressed into service with the Russian army during the war against Napoleon, Boris accidentally becomes a hero, then goes on to win a duel against a cuckolded husband (Harold Gould). He returns to Sonja, hoping to settle down on the Steppes somewhere, but Sonja has become fired up with patriotic fervor, insisting that Boris join a plot to kill Napoleon. Intellectual in-jokes abound in Love and Death, and other gags are basic Allen one-liners; for instance, after being congratulated for his lovemaking skills, Boris replies nonchalantly, "I practice a lot when I'm alone." The pseudo-Russian ambience of Love and Death is comically enhanced by the Sergey Prokofiev compositions on the musical track. Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: October 3rd, 2016

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask BD - Allen's third feature consists of seven short stories illustrating the answers to such crucial questions as Do aphrodisiacs work? , What are sex perverts? and What happens during ejaculation? via a wide range of settings including medieval Britain, present-day Manhattan, an Italy straight out of an Antonioni film and a mad scientist's underground laboratory, before Allen anticipates Pixar's Inside Out by over four decades as he explores the inside of a man's brain (and other areas) at a crucial moment of passion. Blu-ray Release date: September 26th, 2016

Tenebrae BD - Generally - and rightly - regarded as one of Italian horror maestro Dario Argento's finest films, Tenebrae marked the director's return to the giallo genre which he implicitly popularised, after his detour into supernatural gothic horror with Suspiria and Inferno. Based on the filmmaker’s own experiences of an unhinged fanatic obsessed with his work, Tenebrae follows the story of American mystery-thriller novelist Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa), whose arrival in Rome to promote his latest title coincides with a series of violent murders – the perpetrator of which claims to have been inspired by Neal’s latest book. When the author himself begins to receive death threats from the killer he must use his literary know-how to snare the slasher before he becomes the next victim. Blu-ray Release Date: September 13th, 2016

Stigmata BD - A young woman with no strong religious beliefs, Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette) begins having strange and violent experiences, showing signs of the wounds that Jesus received when crucified. When the Vatican gets word of Frankie's situation, a high-ranking cardinal (Jonathan Pryce) requests that the Rev. Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne) investigate her case. Soon Kiernan realizes that very sinister forces are at work, and tries to rescue Frankie from the entity that is plaguing her. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: October 17th, 2016

Hatchet for the Honeymoon BD - Rosso Segno Della Folia, an Italian horror film written, directed and photographed by Mario Bava, is the bloody story of an impotent man who turns to murder to vent his frustrations. The designer and owner of a fashion design business (Stephen Forsyth), frustrated with his own sexual failure, murders the new brides who have modelled his fashions. When he decides to murder his wife, she becomes the ghost who will not leave him alone. Director Bava, who began his career as a cinematographer, while directing mostly low-budget horror films, has become a cult figure among some fans and critics who admire his unique and beautiful visual style and his often very amusing exaggeration of the clichés of the genre. Rosso Segno Della Folia, released in the United States as Hatchet for a Honeymoon is not the best of Mario Bava's work, but this above-average horror film is a must see for those who love the genre and admire stylish horror films. Wicked Vision Blu-ray Release Date: March 30th, 2016

Hardcore BD - Writer-director Paul Schrader’s brilliant, horrifying Hardcore (1979) follows the grim pilgrimage of a Calvinist Midwestern businessman (the great George C. Scott) searching for his vanished daughter in the scuzzy subculture of the West Coast porn industry. In his effort to trace the girl, he joins forces with a young hooker (Season Hubley) he hopes will help; their growing emotional relationship is the beating heart of this harrowing film. Shot by Michael Chapman, and with a score by Jack Nitzsche. Blu-ray Release date: August, 2016

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls BD - In 1970, Twentieth Century-Fox, impressed by the visual zing “King of the Nudies” Russ Meyer had been bringing to bargain-basement exploitation fare, handed the director a studio budget and the title to one of its biggest hits, Valley of the Dolls. With a satirical screenplay by Roger Ebert, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls follows three young female rockers going Hollywood, in hell-bent sixties style, under the spell of a flamboyant producer—whose decadent bashes showcase Meyer’s trademark libidinal exuberance. Transgressive and outrageous, this big-studio version of a debaucherous midnight movie is an addictively entertaining romp from one of cinema’s great outsider artists. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: September 27th, 2016

Valley of the Dolls BD - Cutthroat careerism, wild sex, and fierce female protagonists are all on offer in this adaptation of Jacqueline Susann’s sensational and wildly popular novel. Patty Duke, Barbara Parkins, and Sharon Tate star as three friends attempting to navigate the glamorous, pressurized world of big-time show business—the “valley” is not a place but a narcotized state of mind, and the “dolls” are the pills that rouse them in the morning and knock them out at night. Blending old-fashioned gloss with Madison Avenue grooviness, director Mark Robson’s slick look at the early days of sexual liberation and an entertainment industry coming apart was a giant box-office hit, and has become an unforgettably campy time capsule of the 1960s. Blu-ray Release Date: September 27th, 2016
