ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Kenji Mizoguchi's The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum is a must own and Criterion have gone the extra mile with a 4K restored Blu-ray transfer and excellent new extra. Arrow continue to impress and their new Blu-ray package of Female Prisoner Scorpion: The Complete Collection is desirable on many levels. It probably won't last long at only 4.000 copies. Tony Richardson's A Taste of Honey is a wonderful, touching "kitchen sink" drama, and looks outstanding on Criterion's new Blu-ray filled with valuable extras. Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker gets a Blu-ray treatment from Artificial Eye but may visually underwhelm. On DVD, Gregory reviews another Spanish SD of an important Noir - Hunt the Man Down - and the disc represents the only game in town at present. I covered two vintage British crime-thrillers; The Night Won't Talk revolves around the murder of an artist's model with the police suspecting her fiancé... and his new lover. Headline stars David Farrar and is an excellent, investigative crime drama..

“I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do..”.- HAL (2001)

Have a 'summer' week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum BD - This heartrending masterpiece by Kenji Mizoguchi about the give-and-take between life and art marked the first full realization of the hypnotic long takes and eloquent camera movements that would come to define the director’s films. Kikunosuke (Shotaro Hanayagi), the adopted son of a legendary kabuki actor who is striving to achieve stardom by mastering female roles, turns to his infant brother’s wet nurse for support and affection—and she soon gives up everything for her beloved’s creative glory. Offering a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of kabuki theater in the late nineteenth century, The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum provides a critique of the oppression of women and the sacrifices required of them, and represents the pinnacle of Mizoguchi’s early career. Blu-ray Release Date: September 13th, 2016

Female Prisoner Scorpion: The Complete Collection BD - Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion introduces Nami, a gullible young woman unjustly imprisoned, who must find a way to escape in order to exact revenge upon the man who betrayed her. The visually avant-garde Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 sees director Shunya Ito and star Meiko Kaji re-unite as Nami and six other female convicts escape prison once more. The Gothic horror-inspired Beast Stable finds Nami branded public enemy #1 and on the run. She soon finds refuge with a sympathetic prostitute, but runs afoul of a local gang. The final film in the series, #701's Grudge Song (from director Yasuharu Hasebe, Retaliation, Massacre Gun), shows a gentler side of Nami as she falls in with Kudo, an ex-radical suffering from physical and psychological trauma caused by police torture. Blu-ray Release Date: August 8th-9th, 2016

Stalker BD - Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker, an allegorical science fiction film like his earlier Solaris, was adapted from the novel Picnic by the Roadside by brothers Boris Strugatsky and Arkady Strugatsky. The film follows three men -- the Scientist (Nikolai Grinko), the Writer (Anatoliy Solonitsyn), and the Stalker (Alexander Kaidanovsky) -- as they travel through a mysterious and forbidden territory in the Russian wilderness called the "Zone." In the Zone, nothing is what it seems. Objects change places, the landscape shifts and rearranges itself. It seems as if an unknown intelligence is actively thwarting any attempt to penetrate its borders. In the Zone, there is said to be a bunker, and in the bunker: a magical room which has the power to make wishes come true. Blu-ray Release Date: August 22nd, 2016

A Taste of Honey BD - The revolutionary British New Wave films of the early 1960s were celebrated for their uncompromising depictions of working-class lives and relations between the sexes. Directed by Tony Richardson, a leading light of that movement, and based on one of the most controversial plays of its time, A Taste of Honey features Rita Tushingham in her star-making debut role as a disaffected teenager finding her way amid the economic desperation of industrial Manchester, and despite her absent, self-absorbed mother. With its unapologetic identification with social outcasts and its sensitive, modern approach to matters of sexuality and race, Richardson’s classic is a still startling benchmark work of realism. Blu-ray Release date: August 23rd, 2016

Hunt the Man Down - James Anderson, working as a dishwasher in a bar that's held up after hours, shoots and kills the intruder; in the resultant publicity, he's spotted as the man who went on the lam before being sentenced for murder some years before. It falls to the public defender (Gig Young) to prove his innocence. With the help of his father, a one-armed retired cop (Harry Shannon), he tries to locate the guests at the impromptu drinking party in 1938 which (as such shindigs so often do) ended in the violent death of one of the merry-makers. He finds the original witnesses elusive, dissembling, deranged or dead. He also finds that, once a habit for homicide takes hold, it's hard to break... DVD Release Date: August 28th, 2013

The Night Won't Talk - London's riverside 'village' awakens to the news that a murder has been committed. The victim, discovered strangled in bed, is Stella Smith, a beautiful young artist's model. Stella, however, was a girl with many enemies a deceiver of men who was ruthless in the pursuit of money and her career. While there are many who may have had the motive to kill her, the suspicions of Scotland Yard's Inspector West are soon narrowed down to just three people... DVD Release Date: June 27th, 2016

Headline - David Farrar stars as an intrepid reporter in this 1940s British crime drama. Fleet Street reporter Brooks (Farrar) is sent by his editor Ellington (John Stuart) to investigate a story involving a woman who is said to have witnessed a recent murder. But, unbeknownst to Ellington, his wife Margaret (Antoinette Cellier) is involved and she has also been having an affair with Paul Grayson (Anthony Hawtrey). With so much deception afoot, it is up to Brooks to solve the murder mystery. DVD Release Date: February 29th, 2016
