ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I was blown away this week by Criterion's Blu-ray of John Cassavetes' Love Streams. WOW, what a package. You could easily make the case that Criterion's All That Jazz on Blu-ray is also worthy of top spot this week. Twilight Time's Blu-ray of Woody Allen's Radio Days looks beautiful and the film is a nostalgia gem. More from Criterion with their Blu-ray of Alfonso Cuarón's Y tu mamá también - another must-own film in 1080P. Pedro Almodóvar’s Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! is a sexy, beautifully layered film also offered by Criterion on vibrant Blu-ray. There is quite a difference between the Masters of Cinema Blu-ray of Shohei Imamura's Vengeance is Mine and the upcoming Criterion. Our comparison lets you judge for yourself. Violent Saturday is a masterful Noir-story directed by Richard Fleischer and Twilight Time provide a pristine transfer with commentary in one of their limited edition releases. Sliding Doors is a superior romance/drama - now available on region FREE Blu-ray out of Germany. The Children's Hour is an impressive film and Kino-Lorber have brought it to bare-bones Blu-ray. Absolutely recommended! The Sicilian Clan is a gangster film with the trifecta of classic stars Delon, Gabin and Ventura and is available on another region FREE Blu-ray. The Bankers of God: The Calvi Affair is a solid Italian bio-drama in 1080P. Brannigan is a tired example 70's cop lore now on modest Blu-ray. On DVD, I enjoyed the melodrama Night Song with Merle Oberon and Dana Andrews. Gregory reviewed the lauded Murder Without Crime directed by J. Lee Thompson while Eric covered series 4 of the Nordic Noir Unit One Series Four, the heartwarming The Amazing Catfish and the highly rated modern comedy Wet Behind the Ears. Have a happy week!... Gary.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

All That Jazz BD - The preternaturally gifted director and choreographer Bob Fosse turned the camera on his own life for this madly imaginative, self-excoriating musical masterpiece. Roy Scheider gives the performance of his career as Joe Gideon, whose exhausting work schedule—mounting a Broadway production by day and editing his latest movie by night—and routine of amphetamines, booze, and sex are putting his health at serious risk. Fosse burrows into Gideon’s (and his own) mind, rendering his interior world as phantasmagoric spectacle. Assembled with visionary editing that makes dance come alive on-screen as never before, and overflowing with sublime footwork by the likes of Ann Reinking, Leland Palmer, and Ben Vereen, All That Jazz pushes the musical genre to personal depths and virtuosic aesthetic heights. Blu-ray Release Date: August 26th, 2014

Vengeance is Mine BD - A thief, murderer, and charming lady-killer, Iwao Enokizu (Ken Ogata) is on the run from the police. Director Shohei Imamura turns this fact-based story, of the seventy-eight-day killing spree of a remorseless man from a devoutly Catholic family, into a cold, perverse, and at times diabolically funny tale of the primitive coexisting with the modern. More than just a true-crime case, Vengeance Is Mine bares mankind’s snarling id. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: August 26th, 2014

The Bankers of God: The Calvi Affair BD - Directed by Giuseppe Ferrara, the political thriller I Banchieri Di Dio (God's Bankers) is based on the true-crime saga of the corrupted Banco Ambrosiano and the unsolved murder of bank president Roberto Calvi in 1982. Co-written by Ferrara and Armenia Balducci, the complex story involves the discovery of a trillion lire deficiet in the bank accounts. Calvi (Omero Antonutti) is blamed and thrown in prison. With the help of his wife (Pamela Villoresi), Calvi goes between the corrupt system of political and religious leaders who can get him out of jail. Rutger Hauer appears as Cardianle Marcinkus, the head of the Vatican bank. Blu-ray Release date: August 5th, 2014

The Children's Hour BD - A child's lie has life-shattering consequences in this daring adaptation of Lillian Hellman's celebrated play. Screen legends Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine and James Garner star in this landmark film that is one of the most finely wrought dramas in the history of the screen (Motion Picture Herald). Karen (Hepburn) and Martha (MacLaine) are the headmistresses of an exclusive school for girls. When they discipline a malicious little girl, the vindictive child twists an overheard comment into slander and accuses her teachers of questionable behavior. Soon the scandalous gossip engulfs the school's community, with repercussions that are swift, crushing... and tragic. Produced and Directed by William Wyler (Ben-Hur) and co-starring Miriam Hopkins, Fay Bainter and Veronica Cartwright. Nominated for 5 Academy Awards® including Best Supporting Actress (Bainter). Blu-ray Release date: August 12th, 2014

Y tu mamá también BD - This smash road comedy from Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón is that rare movie to combine raunchy subject matter and emotional warmth. Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna shot to international stardom as a pair of horny Mexico City teenagers from different classes who, after their girlfriends jet off to Italy for the summer, are bewitched by a gorgeous older Spanish woman (Maribel Verdú) they meet at a wedding. When she agrees to accompany them on a trip to a faraway beach, the three form an increasingly intense and sensual alliance that ultimately strips them both physically and emotionally bare. Shot with elegance and dexterity by the great Emmanuel Lubezki, Y tu mamá también is a funny and moving look at human desire. Blu-ray Release Date: August 19th, 2014

Love Streams BD - The electric filmmaking genius John Cassavetes and his brilliant wife and collaborator Gena Rowlands give luminous, fragile performances as two closely bound, emotionally wounded souls who reunite after years apart. Exhilarating and risky, mixing sober realism with surreal flourishes, Love Streams is a remarkable film that comes at the viewer in a torrent of beautiful, erratic feeling. This inquiry into the nature of love in all its forms was Cassavetes’s last truly personal work. Blu-ray Release Date: August 12th, 2014

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! BD - Pedro Almodóvar’s colorful and controversial tribute to the pleasures and perils of Stockholm syndrome, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! is a rambunctious dark comedy starring Antonio Banderas as an unbalanced but alluring ex-mental-patient and Victoria Abril as the B-movie and former porn star he takes prisoner in the hopes of convincing her to marry him. A highly unconventional romance that came on the spike heels of Almodóvar’s international sensation Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, this is a splashy, sexy central work in the career of one of the world’s most beloved and provocative auteurs, radiantly shot by the director’s great cinematographer, José Luis Alcaine. Blu-ray Release date: August 19th, 2014

Radio Days BD - Writer-director Woody Allen’s tenderly nostalgic, joyously funny Radio Days (1987) is a vignette-packed memory piece about growing up in Brooklyn in the 1940s, obsessed with the music, entertainment, and news of the wide world brought into every household via the magic of radio. A young Allen surrogate (played by a teeny red-headed Seth Green) lives with his parents (the wonderful Julie Kavner and Michael Tucker) and extended family in the wind-swept Rockaway neighborhood, their daily routines spiced by the glamour, excitement, thrills, and even occasional doses of grim reality coming to them over the airwaves. Also starring Mia Farrow, Dianne Wiest, and Josh Mostel. Blu-ray Release date: July, 2014

Brannigan BD - John Wayne is the eponymous Chicago cop in Brannigan (1975), sent on a fish-out-of-water journey to England to pick up a bail-jumping thug (John Vernon) for extradition. But to the chagrin of Scotland Yard, handsomely represented by Richard Attenborough, the mobster is abruptly kidnapped from under their noses, and Brannigan has to join forces with a whole different breed of cops—including Judy Geeson as a fetching if no-nonsense Detective-Sergeant—to track him down…all over a gorgeous 1970s-era London. Featuring a jazz-inflected score by Dominic Frontiere, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track. Blu-ray Release date: July, 2014

The Sicilian Clan BD - Roger Santet (Alain Delon) is a convicted murderer sprung from prison by the Sicilian clan headed by the aging Vittorio Manalese (Jean Gabin). They conspire to steal a large cache of jewels from an exhibit in Rome. As they are preparing for the heist, the mobster's American friend Tony Nicosia (Amedeo Nazzarri) suggests that a better way to get the rocks would be to hijack the transport plane while it is en route to New York. The dogged inspector Le Goff (Lino Ventura) is using all the available resources to thwart their plans. Though the heist itself is successful, Santet finds himself trapped by the mob because of his fling with Manalese's daughter-in-law (Irina Demick.) Blu-ray Release date: January 23rd, 2014

Sliding Doors BD - British actor Peter Howitt wrote and directed this British romantic comedy-drama with a "road not taken" premise recalling the 1921 play +If by Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1946), and O.Henry's short story Roads of Destiny (1909). Howitt's storyline branches in two directions: Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) loses her job at a classy London PR firm, has a run-in with a purse-snatcher, and just misses catching her boyfriend Gerry (John Lynch) in bed with his former girlfriend Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn). But what if it were one of those days when everything goes right? As the sliding doors close while she stands on a subway platform in the London underground, Helen ponders the events in her alternate reality. Blu-ray Release date: May 30th, 2014

Violent Saturday BD - A number of otherwise insignificant small-town stories erupt into drama when a gang of hoodlums decides to rob the local bank. A father looking for pride in his son's eyes, a timid clerk who is a peeping tom by night, a man striving to re-win his wife's love, an Amish farmer faced with viciousness, and a proper older woman turned thief, all find themselves entangled with the bank robbers as a peaceful weekend turns violent. Twilight Time Blu-ray Release Date: July, 2014

Unit One Series Four - Series 4 of the long-standing Nordic Noir thriller series that tells the story of a group of staunch crime experts from an elite unit within the Danish police force. We follow their fascinating yet frightening work in the Danish underworld and witness their unflinching commitment and affectionate solidarity when pitted against horrifying, yet all-too-real, examples of the extremes of human nature they face in the line of duty. Unit One is based on true criminal cases through the last 10 years. DVD Release Date: July 7th, 2014

Night Song - In this melodrama, a brilliant pianist is struck blind in an accident and stops working on his equally brilliant concerto. A wealthy woman pretends to be poor and blind to help him regain his confidence, and holds a contest with a large prize for the best musical composition. She, as the blind girl, encourages him to finish his work and enter it. He wins the prize, uses the money to have his sight restored, falls in love with the wealthy woman, and is thrilled to find that his two loves are one and the same. DVD Release Date: March 22nd, 2012

Murder Without Crime - Slick noirish thriller atmospherically directed by J. Lee Thompson and adapted from his successful West End play “Double Error”. As one would expect the story is fairly stagebound with much of the action confined to the flat of Derek Farr, echoes of Hitchcock’s “Rope”, and despite an annoying pseudo-American narrator and a plot which stretches the bounds of credibility, the psychological duel between guilt-ridden tenant and duplicitous landlord makes this modestly-budgeted film eminently watchable. DVD Release Date: August 26th, 2013

The Amazing Catfish - THE AMAZING CATFISH is a heartwarming tale of two unique women who bond while recuperating in a hospital. Martha, a mother of four rambunctious and imaginative children, finds solace when she meets the younger woman, Claudia, and quickly the two build a strong relationship. When Martha invites Claudia to live with her family, Claudia unwittingly takes on the responsibility of becoming a surrogate mother to Martha's children. DVD Release Date: July 29th, 2014

Wet Behind the Ears - When Samantha, a bright-eyed graduate who plans to live in the city with her best friend, Victoria, can t find employment due to lack of experience, she is forced to move back home and take a job at an ice cream parlor, where she is further demoralized by old classmates. Meanwhile, feeling abandoned by her friend, Victoria struggles to find a suitable replacement roommate, while enduring corporate life and her boss egomaniacal demands. But when Samantha convinces Victoria to use her corporate position as part of a shady business opportunity to solve their problems, the strain on their friendship comes to a head. Now, Samantha must figure out how to get her friend back, while still searching for a way to get her life on track. DVD Release Date: July 22nd, 2014
