ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Comments will return next week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Wild Tales BD - From chance encounters on a plane, which may be more than they appear, to the frustrations of a man whose car is towed and the cracks in a couple's relationship that begin to show even before their wedding cake is cut, Szifron takes each situation and twists it into a tale of the unexpected. Elsewhere, a diner waitress toys with vengeance, road rage could prove fatal and a car accident leads to sinister scheming. Szifron has the sensibility and unpredictability of Roald Dahl, pushing his characters until they snap but never quite in the way we imagine they might. Blu-ray Release date: June 16th, 2015

The Hound of the Baskervilles BD - The best Sherlock Holmes film ever made, and one of Hammer's finest movies. Fisher, at the peak of his career, used Conan Doyle's plot to establish a stylish dialectic between Holmes' nominally rational Victorian milieu and the dark, fabulous cruelty behind the Baskerville legend. This opposition is expressed within the first ten minutes, when he moves from the 'legend' with its strong connotations of the Hellfire Club (the nobleman tormenting a young girl with demonic satisfaction) to the rational eccentricities of Baker Street. Holmes is indeed the perfect Fisher hero, the Renaissance scholar with strong mystical undertones, and Cushing gives one of his very best performances, ably supported by Morell (who does not make the usual mistake of overplaying Watson). Lee is in equally good form as the Baskerville heir, and Jack Asher's muted Technicolor photography is superb. Blu-ray Release date: June 1st, 2015

Dark Victory BD - Bette Davis' bravura, moving-but-never-morbid performance as Judith Traherne, a dying heiress determined to find happiness in her few remaining months, remains a three-hankie classic. But that success would never have happened if Davis hadn't pestered studio brass to buy Dark Victory's story rights. Jack Warner finally did so skeptically. Who wants to see a dame go blind? he asked. Almost everyone: Dark Victory was Davis! Blu-ray Release Date: June 9th, 2015

The Pillow Book BD - Peter Greenaway directed this elliptical and visually intricate tale of the far side of erotic and intellectual attraction. As a girl, Nagiko would receive a special gift each year from her father: a calligrapher (Ken Ogata) who would carefully paint a poem on her face, as her aunt (Hideko Yoshida) read aloud from The Pillow Book, a classic Japanese text on the art of love. As Nagiko (Vivian Wu) reached adulthood, her father insisted on putting a stop to this ritual, and he persuaded her to marry the nephew of his publisher (Ken Mitsuishi). But Nagiko is not satisfied with her husband, and after finding success as a model, she seeks a lover who will indulge her fondness for literature by writing verse on her naked body. Blu-ray Release Date: June 9th, 2015

The Hunchback of Notre Dame BD - Charles Laughton endured a daily five-and-a-half-hour makeup session to become Quasimodo, the mocked and vilified bellringer of Notre Dame. The result was one of his best performances: outsized yet nuanced, heartrending yet inspiring. Maureen O'Hara is the gypsy Esmeralda, whose simple act of pity frees the emotions within him. When she is wrongly condemned, he rescues her from hanging, sweeping all of Paris into a fight for justice. Blu-ray Release date: June 9th, 2015

The Bridge BD - Bernhard Wicki’s astonishing The Bridge was the first major antiwar film to come out of Germany after World War II, as well as the nation’s first postwar film to be widely shown internationally, even securing an Oscar nomination. Set near the end of the conflict, it follows a group of teenage boys in a small town as they contend with everyday matters like school, girls, and parents, before enlisting as soldiers and being forced to defend their home turf in a confused, terrifying battle. This expressively shot, emotionally bruising drama dared to humanize young German soldiers at a historically tender moment, and proved influential for the coming generation of New German Cinema auteurs. Blu-ray Release date: June 23rd, 2015

André Gregory & Wallace Shawn: 3 Films BD - When André Gregory and Wallace Shawn—theater directors, writers, actors, and longtime friends—sat down for a stimulating meal in 1981’s My Dinner with André, they not only ended up with one of cinema’s unlikeliest iconic scenarios but launched a film collaboration that would continue to pay creative dividends for decades. The subsequent projects they made together for the screen—1994’s Vanya on 42nd Street, a passionate read-through of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, and 2014’s striking Henrik Ibsen interpretation A Master Builder—are penetrating works that exist on the boundary between theater and film, and that both emerged out of many years of rehearsals with loyal troupes of actors. Gregory and Shawn’s unique contributions to the cinematic landscape are shape-shifting, challenging, and entertaining works about the process of creation. Blu-ray Release Date: June 16th, 2015

Spider Baby BD - The credits dub this the maddest story ever told, a promise that s well on the way to being fulfilled in the opening scene alone, when Virginia traps and kills a hapless deliveryman in her makeshift web. She s one of three siblings who suffer from a unique genetic disorder that causes them to regress back to childhood, while retaining the physical strength and sexual maturity of adults. US Blu-ray Release Date: June 9th, 2015

The Sadistic Baron Von Klaus BD - A series of grisly murders in the remote village of Holfen convinces the locals that the town is still cursed by the spirit of a 17th-century baron who maintained an elaborate torture chamber in the dungeon of his estate. Undaunted by the villagers' superstitions, a detective (Georges Rollin) quickly focuses his investigation upon the creepy Max Von Klaus (Howard Vernon). Meanwhile, the youngest male descendent of the Von Klaus bloodline (Hugo Blanco) returns home to mourn the death of his mother, and must wrestle with his own connection to the cursed family history. Blu-ray Release date: June 9th, 2015

Five Easy Pieces BD - Jack Nicholson plays the poignantly named Robert Eroica Dupea, an angry, insubordinate smartmouth precariously employed as an oil-rigger out west, and trapped in a toxic relationship with Rayette (Karen Black), a diner waitress and would-be country singer. It is only when we learn that his father is dying, and Robert must travel back to the family home in Washington state for a last goodbye, that we learn that Robert is in retreat from his poisoned vocation: once a brilliantly promising classical pianist, he has angrily given up music, having failed to reach the standards set by his father and by himself. So Robert and poor, uncomprehending Rayette are guests in his ramshackle family home chock-full of decaying and defeated musical talent, like something from Dickens or Chekhov. Blu-ray Release Date: June 30th, 2015

Sekal Has To Die BD - The film begins with the arrival of Wallachian blacksmith Jury Baran (Olaf Lubaszenko) to Lakotic, a village in Hana, where he needs to hide from the Gestapo (a letter of recommendation to the local mayor). Because of his evangelical faith by the local landlords take quite hostile. Baran soon realizes ratios in the village - farmers live in fear of the informer Ivan Sekal (Boguslaw Linda), which receives the occupants arrested Grunty neighbors. Farmers decide to use Baranov difficult situation (letter from the mayor knows where to hide his wife and daughter) and blackmail to force him to murder. Meanwhile, it turns out that Sekalova monstrosity stems from humiliation, which he received in childhood for bastardy. In a knife fight Baran Sekal actually kills himself, however, is seriously wounded. Blu-ray Release date: February, 2015

Kingsman: The Secret Service BD - Based on a comic book — isn't everything these days? — the idea spun from Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons' "The Secret Service" is as rich with possibilities as the spy genre is for spoofing. So is the bizarre weaponry, always good for a laugh in "Kingsman," from basics like a lethal fountain pen or cigarette lighter/hand grenade to the exotic Oscar Pistorius-style racing blades of one sultry Gazelle (Sofia Boutella) that can slice a man in half in mere seconds. Blu-ray Release date: June 9th, 2015

Imagine - Ian arrives at a Lisbon clinic for the visually impaired to teach blind patients navigational skills. The clinic's international community greet his unorthodox methods with both anticipation and scepticism. For Ian, orientation flows from the mind and imagination - then sensory perception follows. His methods, though effective, are not without risk... DVD Release Date: October 2014

The Accursed - Suspense and suspicion power this absorbing postwar drama from writer-director Michael McCarthy. When Col. Charles Price (Donald Wolfit) receives a phone call from a man claiming that one of the former German resistance members gathered in his home is responsible for a friend's death, Price asks him to the house. But when the informant arrives, he is stabbed to death before he can name the traitor! When an American intelligence officer, Major Shane (Robert Bray) then arrives under mysterious circumstances, the tension escalates until a shocking plot twist reveals all. Also starring Jane Griffiths and Anton Diffring, The Accursed is murder mystery at its best. It's widely held that Donald Wolfit inspired Ronald Harwood's play The Dresser (later adapted into the 1983 Albert Finney film), about a difficult stage actor. Harwood was Wolfit's personal dresser for nearly five years. Renown Pictures DVD Release Date: June 27th, 2011

Time Table - In this suspenseful detective yarn, an insurance investigator finds himself unbearably bored by his routine life and decides to become a criminal. Following the robbery he engineers, he begins to investigate the theft himself. Unfortunately, he is trailed by a determined railroad cop, a dear friend who remains professional despite the mixed emotions he feels. The film is the feature debut of TV actor Jack Klugman. DVD Release Date: March 31, 2015
