ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Wow - 4 stellar Criterion Blu-ray releases reviewed this week. Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove gets top spot - a stellar Blu-ray package loaded with value and re-watchability. René Laloux's Fantastic Planet never ceases its impact and Criterion have given us a new 1080P transfer. Both Arrow's Noir Blu-rays; Norman Foster's Woman on the Run and Byron Haskin's Too Late For Tears appear to be exact duplicates of the previously reviewed Flicker Alley Blu-ray editions - and that's fine as it's hard to improve upon perfection. You know it's a strong week when Michelangelo Antonioni on Criterion Blu-ray is this far back on being mentioned. Le Amiche - a key film of the iconic director's middle-period gets a superlative Blu-ray treatment. It's almost impossible not to love Here Comes Mr. Jordan - and Criterion have transferred it to Blu-ray in another must-own package. There is immense value in Arrow's Nikkatsu Diamond Guys Vol. 2 Blu-ray with three classics from the famous Japanese  studio films. I really enjoyed the Icelandic film Rams - a wonderfully human story and modern film. Star-packed Venom has its moments and an appealing early 80's horror-thriller. Lana Turner in Madame X is very worthwhile - a sneaky story initially masquerading as a romance then morphing into a hidden identity, murder and blackmail. Nice to own on Blu-ray thanks top Panamint. Film Detective gives a superior Blu-ray transfer to Corman's The Terror with Jack - an odd film that also supports and odd appeal. Rudy Ray Moore is back as Dolemite in The Human Tornado - a raw Blaxploitation flic from the mid 70's. Softcore fluff Sorceress gets no recommendation despite the egregious Julie Strain nudity.

Film Quote of the week:

"Oh yes, the past can hurt. But you can either run from it, or learn from it.".

Stay safe - till next week - Gary

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Human Tornado BD - Dolemite (Rudy Ray Moore) is back and badder than ever in The Human Tornado! After being run out of town by a racist sheriff, Dolemite returns to LA only to discover that Queen Bee's (Lady Reed) club has been taken over by the mafia. On top of that they have also kidnapped two of Queen Bee's top girls! With the law hot on his tail, Dolemite rounds up the toughest Kung-Fu fighting badasses in Southern California to take on the mob, culminating in one of the craziest surprise endings in blaxploitation film history! Blu-ray Release Date: May 31st, 2016

Nikkatsu Diamond Guys Vol. 2 BD - Nikkatsu, the oldest film studio in Japan, inaugurated a star system in the late 1950s - early 60s, finding talent and contracting to their Diamond Line for a series of wild genre pictures. This collection celebrates these Diamond Guys with three classic films from directors Buichi Saito (Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in Peril), Ko Nakahira (Crazed Fruit), and Haruyasu Noguchi, who is a new discovery for the West. Blu-ray Release date: June 13th - 14th, 2016

Too Late For Tears (Arrow added) BD - Jane Palmer (Scott) and her husband Alan (Arthur Kennedy) mysteriously have $60,000 literally dropped in their laps. The circumstances seem mighty suspicious to Alan, who wants to turn the money over to the police. But in a materialistic rapture, Jane won t let it go. She doesn't care where it came from, or what danger might ensue - not if it will bring her the luxury she craves. Enter shady Danny Fuller (Duryea, as cocky and menacing as ever), who claims the money belongs to him. Let the games begin! Roy Huggins snappy script (adapted from his novel) is a complex, breezy and black-hearted homage to James M. Cain and Raymond Chandler. Rapacious housewife Jane Palmer is one of the juiciest female villains in Hollywood history, and Liz Scott's best role ever. Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: June 13th, 2016

Woman on the Run (Arrow added) BD - After witnessing a gangland execution Frank goes into hiding, while his wife, Eleanor (Sheridan), and the cops go on a wild chase around San Francisco before Frank is silenced by the mob. Eleanor is certain she ll lead them to her husband, whose testimony against the killer could bring down a crime kingpin. But Eleanor and her Frank are separated - she never wants to see him again. When roguish newspaperman Danny Legget (Dennis O Keefe, T-Men, Raw Deal) charms Eleanor into helping him track down the hidden husband - there are unexpected, stunning, and poignant results. Arrow Blu-ray Release Date: June 13th, 2016

Sorceress BD - In this dark tale of eroticism and the supernatural, Larry (Larry Poindexter) is an attorney rising through the ranks at a prominent law firm. Larry's wife Erica (Julie Strain) loves her husband very much and would do nearly anything for him -- which takes on a whole new meaning when one discovers that she's a witch with a firm command of her darker powers. Larry is in line for a promotion, but instead the senior partnership is given to Howard (Edward Albert), and Erica is just as upset as you might imagine; using both her sexual allure and her magical powers, Erica takes her revenge on Howard, leaving him in a wheelchair. However, it seems that Howard's wife Amelia (Linda Blair) is also a witch, and she's not about to allow the crippling of Howard to go unpunished. Sorceress also features Michael Parks and a cameo appearance from noted exploitation director Fred Olen Ray. Blu-ray Release date: June 14th, 2016

Venom BD - It was supposed to be the perfect crime: the sexy maid (Susan George of STRAW DOGS), a psychotic chauffeur (Oliver Reed of THE BROOD) and an international terrorist (the legendary Klaus Kinski) kidnap a wealthy ten-year-old boy from his elegant London townhouse. But they didn't count on a murdered cop, a desperate hostage siege, and one very unexpected houseguest: a furious Black Mamba, the most lethal and aggressive snake known to nature. It can attack from ten feet away. Its bite brings excruciating death. And it is on the loose. Now, terror knows no antidote... and the ultimate in slithering mayhem is VENOM. Blu-ray Release Date: May 31st, 2016

Here Comes Mr. Jordan BD - Here Comes Mr. Jordan is one of those rare Hollywood classics that hasn't dated and never fails to raise one's spirits. It's one of the first and best of the Films Blanc, the splinter genre of light comedy-dramas that imagine the universe to be governed by a fanciful Hereafter. Screenwriters Sidney Buchman and Seton I. Miller put Robert Montgomery into a no man's land between heaven and earth, while sympathetic angels work to correct a cosmic error. Nominated for seven Oscars, the film won two, for Original Story and Screenplay. Blu-ray Release Date: June 14th, 2016

Fantastic Planet BD - Fantastic Planet tells the story of "Oms", human-like creatures, kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue giants called "Draags". The story takes place on the Draags' planet Ygam, where we follow our narrator, an Om called Terr, from infancy to adulthood. He manages to escape enslavement from a Draag learning device used to educate the savage Oms — and begins to organise an Om revolt. The imagination invested in the surreal creatures, music and sound design, and eerie landscapes, is immense and unforgettable. Blu-ray Release Date: June 21st, 2016

Le Amiche BD - A key film of Antonioni's middle-period, Le amiche [The Girlfriends] finds the Italian master expanding his palette in the realm of traditional narrative cinema by way of his powerhouse direction of an ensemble cast, while entrenching his devotion to expressing the emotional makeup of the modern woman. Clelia (Eleonora Rossi-Drago) embarks from Rome to set up a fashion-salon in Torino. Shortly after arrival, she finds herself caught up in the (melo)dramas of a bourgeoise circle of acquaintances (including the iconic Valentina Cortese), and their attendant attempts at suicide, their class prejudices, and the romantic alliances that threaten to transform the social clique into an emotional tar-pit. Le amiche represents the epitome of Antonioni's '50s period, and although it lays the groundwork for such '60s breakthroughs as L'avventura and La notte, it proves itself no less brilliant. Blu-ray Release Date: June 7th, 2016

Dr. Strangelove BD - Stanley Kubrick’s painfully funny take on Cold War anxiety is one of the fiercest satires of human folly ever to come out of Hollywood. The matchless shape-shifter Peter Sellers plays three wildly different roles: Royal Air Force Captain Lionel Mandrake, timidly trying to stop a nuclear attack on the USSR ordered by an unbalanced general (Sterling Hayden); the ineffectual and perpetually dumbfounded U.S. President Merkin Muffley, who must deliver the very bad news to the Soviet premier; and the titular Strangelove himself, a wheelchair-bound presidential adviser with a Nazi past. Finding improbable hilarity in nearly every unimaginable scenario, Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a subversive masterpiece that officially announced Kubrick as an unparalleled stylist and pitch-black ironist. Criterion Blu-ray Release Date: June 28th, 2016

The Terror BD - In one of his first-ever roles, a young Jack Nicholson stars as Lt. Andre Duvalier, a soldier in Napoleon's army in 19th century France, separated from his regiment. He awakens on a beach to the sight of a strange woman who leads him to the gothic, towering castle that serves as home to eerie Baron Von Leppe (Boris Karloff). But, as Duvalier soon discovers, nothing is what it seems in this ghastly, haunted mansion of death! This underground favorite was made in classic Roger Corman fashion, making the most of his resources to bring yet another film to life on a minimal budget for his producers at American International Pictures. AIP was a small, independent studio that specialized in low-budget teensploitation films, and Corman was one of their main men. Film Detective Blu-ray Release date: May 31st, 2016

Madame X BD - Based on a 1909 French play by Alexandre Bisson, Madame X was first filmed in 1916, with Dorothy Donnelly in the title role. In a 1920 remake, the celebrated stage actress Pauline Frederick played her. The first talkie version, in 1929, earned an Academy Award nomination for Broadway star Ruth Chatterton. MGM remade it in 1937 with Gladys George as the doomed lady, and there was a British version in 1948. Tuesday Weld received excellent reviews in the 1981 television adaptation. Perhaps the best of the lot -- and certainly the one with the highest production values -- is the 1966 version of Madame X starring Lana Turner. Blu-ray Release Date: May 24th, 2016

Rams BD - In a secluded valley in Iceland, brothers Gummi and Kiddi live side by side, tending to their prized ancestral sheep. But a long-term grudge means that they haven’t spoken to each other for four decades, passing messages via the sheep dog. When a lethal ovine disease suddenly appears in the valley, the authorities move in to cull all of the livestock. But Gummi and Kiddi don’t give up easily and each brother tries to stave off the disaster in his own fashion: Kiddi by using his rifle and Gummi by using his wits. As the authorities close in the brothers will need to come together to save the special breed of sheep passed down for generations - and themselves - from extinction.
