ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): This week we have a few highly important releases to recommend; The Blu-ray of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's The Merchant of Four Seasons has been given the Criterion-treatment with impressive results. I was thrilled with BFI's Bill Morrison: Selected Films 1996-2014 3 Blu-ray disc package. 17 works of art, beautifully scored, and the closest representation to impressionism in cinema. Alain Resnais' final film, Life of Riley, is available on Blu-ray and we have reviewed The Masters of Cinema package. It is a surprisingly affirmative farewell to life from a truly great artist. Jerzy Skolimowski's Moonlighting - both a political allegory and touching human drama - has arrived on very pleasing Blu-ray from the tiny label B2MP. Let's see more! Criterion have brought Mark Rydell's The Rose with Bette Midler's iconic 'fame and addiction' performance to Blu-ray in another complete and competent set. Brian Yuzna's off-the-wall Society has been brought to Blu-ray by Arrow films - another release available on both sides of the pond. Céline Sciamma's Girlhood is a sensitive and fresh gang-related film from France and now on Blu-ray. Michael Mann’s thriller Blackhat may offer more than is perceived in first viewing - a fascinating high-tec story gleaned from current events. Each viewing I grow more fond of Peckinpah's The Osterman Weekend and the 1080P presentation supports that despite an imperfect video appearance. I had never seen Flawless with the unusual pairing of Philip Seymour Hoffman as a flamboyant drag queen and retired security guard Robert De Niro. Worth seeing, if you have not - and available on Olive Films Blu-ray. River of Death may have a niche following but I couldn't get into this jungle-adventure with Michael Dudikoff from the late 80's. Disappointment of the week is VCI's Blu-ray transfer of Laurel and Hardy's The Flying Deuces - another MPEG2 looking soft and overly bright. Eric reviewed 3 DVDs this week; Michael Bartlett's fantasy-thriller House of Last Things, the highly touted documentary American Interior, and the drama-romance The Comedian. "I guess goodbyes are the only perfect things left for us."

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Merchant of Four Seasons BD - New German Cinema icon Rainer Werner Fassbinder kicked off a new phase of his young career when he made the startling The Merchant of Four Seasons. In this anguished yet mordantly funny film, Fassbinder charts the decline of a self-destructive former policeman and war veteran struggling to make ends meet for his family by working as a fruit vendor. Fassbinder had gained acclaim for a series of trenchant, quickly made early films, but for this one he took more time and forged a new style—featuring a more complexly woven script and narrative structure and more sophisticated use of the camera, and influenced by the work of his recently discovered idol, Douglas Sirk. The result is a meticulously made, unforgiving social satire. Blu-ray Release date: May 26th, 2015

Flawless BD - Can a homophobic former rent-a-cop find happiness learning to sing with a man in a dress? That's the big question in this comedy-drama. A retired security guard Robert De Niro, deeply conservative and set in his ways, falls victim to a debilitating stroke. His doctors prescribe an extensive program of physical therapy once he's released from the hospital, including singing lessons to help him regain his full powers of speech. As it turns out, there's a vocal instructor living next door to the guard, so he signs up only to discover that his new teacher is a flamboyant drag queen awaiting a sex-change operation Philip Seymour Hoffman. Written and directed by Joel Schumacher, Blu-ray Release date: May 19th, 2015

Moonlighting (Skolimowski) BD - Jerzy Skolimowski wrote and directed this brilliant story about four foreign workers who come to London under false pretense to restore an apartment. Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons stars as Nowak, the only one of the four Polish workers who speaks and understands English. While they are deep in the midst of reconstruction, Poland is swept by political turmoil. The military have imposed martial law, outlawed the unions and put the free world on alert. Nowak, aware of the situation through phone calls and news reports, must keep knowledge of it from his co-workers until the job is finished, and also figure out a way to get his fellow workers home before it's too late. The film won the best screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival the year it was screened. Blu-ray Release date: May 8th, 2015

The Flying Deuces BD - The happy reunion of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy after a characteristic interlude of reproachful squabbling may not be as handsomely celebrated by "The Flying Deuces" as it might be, but their new picture at the Rialto is reason enough for a glad-hand and a bit of hatchet-burying all around. Anything which contributes to the generation of laughter in the body politic is okay by this department, even though it be the oldest jokes. And since laughter is what our honored friends are able to provoke plenty of (even though it be with the oldest jokes), their latest effort is recommended. Blu-ray Release date: May 19th, 2015

River of Death BD - This jungle adventure features an extremely complicated plot that involves a megalomaniacal Nazi doctor who continues to perform inhuman experiments in the Amazon jungle and helms the Lost City of the Nazis, a mecca for war criminals and new followers. He is pursued by three vengeful people: a former colleague whom he double-crossed near the end of the war, a young woman who saw him murder her father, and an angry American physician, whose daughter the doctor kidnapped after they came to the jungle to help the ailing Indians who are dying from a mysterious disease. Blu-ray Release date: May 26th, 2015

The Osterman Weekend BD - What would you do if a total stranger proved to you that your three closest friends are enemy agents? For investigative TV host John Tanner (Rutger Hauer), the news comes on the eve of a reunion weekend at his home where the traitors (Craig T. Nelson, Dennis Hopper and Chris Sarandon) are all placed under intense surveillance by a mysterious CIA operative (John Hurt). But as the get-together turns deadly, are Tanner and his family being set up for the most shocking betrayal of all? From its stinging look at media manipulation to its stunning final twist, the ultimate conspiracy will be uncovered by whoever survives THE OSTERMAN WEEKEND. Blu-ray Release date: May 19th, 2015

Society BD - Teenager Bill Whitney (Billy Warlock) has always felt like the odd one out in his wealthy, upper-class Beverly Hills family. For some reason, he just doesn't seem to fit in. But his sense of alienation takes a sinister turn when he hears an audio recording of his sister s coming-out party, which seems to implicate his family and others in a bizarre, ritualistic orgy. And then there are the strange things he s been seeing glimpses of people with their bodies contorted impossibly out of shape... Is Bill going mad or is there something seriously amiss in his neighborhood? Blu-ray Release date: June 8th, 2015

Bill Morrison: Selected Films 1996-2014 BD - Over the past twenty years, Bill Morrison has built a filmography of more than thirty striking and original works which have been presented in cinemas, museums, galleries and concert halls worldwide. Making use of rare archival footage, which has often been decayed by the passing of time, Morrison explores the power of film as a medium which is evocative of memory and gives rise to a sense of collective mythology. Morrison's exquisite and timeless films are scored by the cream of the US underground / avant-garde music scene, including Dave Douglas, Henryk Górecki and Bill Frisell. Blu-ray Release date: May 4th, 2015

Life of Riley BD - In the midst of rehearsals for a new play, amateur dramatics proponents Colin and Kathryn receive the shattering news that their friend George is fatally ill and only has a few months to live. Life begins to come apart at the seams not just for Kathryn, who was once George's partner, but also for her friends Tamara and Monica. The full force of the emotional turmoil they experienced in their youth and their long-buried dreams are rekindled. Much to the chagrin of their respectable, middle-class husbands, the women begin to argue about which of them should be allowed to accompany George on a final journey... Blu-ray Release date: May 25th, 2015

The Rose BD - Bette Midler exploded onto the screen with her take-no-prisoners performance in this quintessential film about fame and addiction from director Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond). Midler is the rock-and-roll singer Mary Rose Foster (known as the Rose to her legions of fans), whose romantic relationships and mental health are continuously imperiled by the demands of life on the road. Incisively scripted by Bo Goldman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and beautifully shot by Blow Out’s Vilmos Zsigmond (with assistance on the dazzling concert scenes by a host of other world-class cinematographers, including Conrad L. Hall, László Kovács, Owen Roizman, and Haskell Wexler), this is a sensitively drawn and emotionally overwhelming melodrama that made the popular singer into a movie star as well. Blu-ray Release date: May 19th, 2015

Girlhood BD - The first shot of the movie is of a football game — the American kind, with pads and helmets and hard contact at the line of scrimmage. This may come as a surprise in a French movie. Shouldn’t they be playing soccer? Another surprise: All of the players are girls, mostly of African descent and residents of a high-rise housing complex on the outskirts of Paris. So right from the start, before the plot has gotten underway, “Girlhood” insists that the world will not conform to easy categories or lazy expectations. Blu-ray Release date: May 19th, 2015

Blackhat BD - Michael Mann’s thriller “Blackhat,” a story about the intersection of bodies and machines, is a spectacular work of unhinged moviemaking. By turns brutal and sentimental, lovely and lurid, as serious as the grave and blissfully preposterous, it combines a truckload of plot with many of the obsessions, tropes, sights and sounds that distinguish his other movies, from kinetic gun battles to cool beauties gazing into the distance in sunglasses. Here those beauties are a pair of improbable computer savants, played by Chris Hemsworth and Tang Wei, who race, jet and furiously bang on keyboards across the globe while chasing villainy, lines of code and millions in loot. Blu-ray Release date: May 12th, 2015

House of Last Things - ALAN (Randy Schulman) is a successful classical music critic as reflected in his spacious Portland home. His wife SARAH (Diane Dalton) is an obsessively grieving woman, struggling with an unspoken tragedy, even after months of institutionalized therapy. Upon Sarah's release, Alan forces Sarah into a trip to Italy. He has already arranged for a house sitter in KELLY (Lindsey Haun), a young woman lonely for commitment and the better things in life. Kelly is quickly joined by her younger brother TIM (RJ Mitte), and her trashy boyfriend JESSE (Blake Berris). DVD Release Date: February 10th, 2015

American Interior - Welsh musician Gruff Rhys documents his latest Investigative Concert Tour™, retracing the fantastical adventure of his 18th Century relative, the explorer John Evans. In search of a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans, John Evans left Wales for America in 1792 with only a $1.75 in his pocket. Alone and without a horse, he walked into the wilderness of the Great Plains and reappeared 7 years later as Don Juan Evans having changed the shape of American history. American Interior is an exploration of how wild fantasies interact with hard history and how myth-making can inspire humans to partake in crazy, vain pursuits of glory, including exploration, war and the creative arts. DVD Release Date: April 7th, 2015

The Comedian - Ed is a stand up comedian in his early thirties. He is handsome, charming, witty and lost. Trying to make it on the London comedy circuit, he spends his nights performing in small rooms above pubs and his days making ends meet working at a call center. He lives with Elisa, a beautiful French singer, and the two like brother and sister: inseparable, loving and asexual. One night though on the bus home, Ed meets Nathan, a young black artist, blunt, honest and free. They immediately connect and begin a passionate affair. Suddenly the intimate bond between Ed and Elisa is threatened and Ed is faced with a choice between his attraction to a man and his love for a woman. Set in the modern metropolitan, The Comedian is an authentic, moving drama that finds the comedy (and tragedy) in everyday life. DVD Release Date: April 14th, 2015
