ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): It was the most sedate week of the year, I was in awe of the beauty of Hou Hsiao-hsien's The Assassin - a film definitely worthy of repeat-viewing. Masters of Cinema give us two Pier Paolo Pasolini films in one Blu-ray package; The Hawks and the Sparrows and Pigsty (Porcile) have arrived in 1080P to the appreciation of the director's following. I found a lot to enjoy about Kino's Blu-ray of Curse of the Faceless Man including the commentary. In a similar vein Yongary, Monster From the Deep, a Korean monster film from the late 60's, also comes to Blu-ray from Kino - and includes a valued commentary. Eric covered a seminal 'gay coming of age story'; Edge of Seventeen on Blu-ray advancing substantially beyond the old letterboxed DVD. I'm afraid I didn't embrace the horrid The Giant Spider Invasion - now on flawed Blu-ray from VCI. Eric reviewed five DVDs this week and many of the films are highly acclaimed World Cinema features. Father's Chair is an award-winning drama-thriller out of Brazil, Sabina Rivas (our Feature DVD of the Month) is a multi-award-winning adventure-romance from Mexico, The Weather Station is an intriguing thriller out of Russia. On Broadway is an emotional drama out of the US and In the Basement looks like an amusing documentary out of Austria.

Quote for today:

Ann Miller (Virginia Huston): “She can't be all bad. No one is.
Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum): “Well, she comes the closest.”

Have a pleasant but exciting week! - Gary

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Edge of Seventeen BD - Called 'a classic gay coming of age story' by The Los Angeles Times, EDGE OF SEVENTEEN is now remastered and re-released in a new director-approved HD restoration. Set in the summer of 1984 in Sandusky, Ohio, teenager Eric Hunter is terrified and exhilarated by his sexual attraction to Rod, a college student and co-worker at a local fast food joint. But, Eric's sexual awakening is complicated by his new romance with his best friend Maggie. Featuring Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black) and an upbeat 80's soundtrack that includes the Eurythmics and Bronski Beat, this critically acclaimed film continues to set the standard for all generations. Blu-ray Release date: February 2nd, 2016

The Giant Spider Invasion BD - In this hilariously cheesy throwback to the giant-monster flicks craze of the 50s, giant spiders from outer space begin to invade Earth, when huge black hole appears in a farmer’s field outside a small town in Wisconsin. A NASA scientist deduces the invasion is the result of some sort of intergalactic gateway, as he devises a plan to stop the huge, hairy, creeping crawlers from devouring the local population. Blu-ray Release date: February 2nd, 2016

The Hawks and the Sparrows BD - From its sung opening credits, Hawks and Sparrows (Uccellacci e uccellini) is a wonderfully free-form picaresque fable that lampoons politics, religion and the state of modern Italy, as the beloved comic actor Totò, Pasolini regular Ninetto Davoli and a talking crow wander the landscape through a gauntlet of unexpected encounters. Blu-ray Release date: February 22nd, 2016

Pigsty BD - Pigsty (Porcile) is one of his most controversial works, interspersing the mute wanderings of cannibalistic savages against a barren, volcanic earth with the tale of Julian (played by Nouvelle Vague icon Jean-Pierre Léaud), his radically politicised fiancée Ida (Anne Wiazemsky, Au Hasard Balthazar), and the financial machinations of his father Herr Klotz in contemporary industrialised Germany. Blu-ray Release date: February 22nd, 2016

Yongary, Monster From the Deep BD - A monstrous creature creates destruction throughout Korea... as scientists running against time create a refrigerant that maybe the only weapon to stop the monster before it destroys the whole country. This cult-classics was Korea's first entry into the kaiju movie genre, made famous by the Japanese with classics Godzilla and Gamera. After a nuclear test causes a massive earthquake, scientists realize that the quake is the least of their problems… the intense radiation has awoke the legendary reptilian monster, Yongary. Martial law is declared and cities are evacuated as the armed forces battle the fearsome creature with all the arsenal firearms available to them. Blu-ray Release date: January 5th, 2016

The Assassin BD - Hou Hsiao-hsien, winner of the Best Director award at this year's Cannes Film Festival, transcends the wuxia genre and transports us into a land once upon a time that is charged with stillness and light and populated by women who take action, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, because it is. Shu Qi's movements are fantastic, her leaps nimble like a cat's, her landings on the ground without a sound. The power of telling a tale should not be underestimated. The story of the King's bluebird takes a prominent spot as the film's format literally widens. Blu-ray Release date: January 26th, 2016

Curse of the Faceless Man BD - Archeologists excavating the ruins of Pompeii discover what seems to be a perfectly preserved human figure, encased in lava. A scientific team led by Dr. Paul Mallon (Richard Anderson) begins to piece together the history and identity of the stone figure. Using surviving records from the city and the location where the figure was found as a starting point, the archeologists uncover the story of Quintilus, an Etruscan gladiator-slave who was tortured and sentenced to death for daring to love a noblewoman. He vowed to kill anyone who kept him from the woman he loved, and was in the process of being executed when the eruption of Vesuvius destroyed the city and buried Quintilus in molten lava. Their research takes on tremendous urgency when evidence -- in the form of a rising number of dead bodies -- begins to show that Quintilus may not only still be alive, in some impossible-to-fathom manner, but bent on carrying out his final wish, of rescuing and escaping with his beloved, and that the woman he loved has been reincarnated, in some manner, in the person of Mallon's fiancée. Blu-ray Release date: February 16th, 2016

Father's Chair - After an argument triggered by the birthday gift of a chair to Pedro from Theo's long-estranged father, Pedro announces that he is spending the weekend before their birthday dinner on a trip with his best friend. When he fails to turn up on Sunday, Pedro's parents learn from his friend that there was no trip and that Pedro was desperately in need of money for unknown purposes. When they learn that he has adopted a horse with a forged ID, Theo starts following his trail by car while Branca waits at home in case Pedro turns up. DVD Release Date: January 18th, 2016

Sabina Rivas - In the Mexican-Guatemalan border, young teenage lovers, Sabina and Jovany, both Hondurans, accidentally meet again after some years without seeing each other. She plans to get to the United States and dreams about being a great singer; he commits all the required atrocities to be accepted by the gang: la Mara Salvatrucha. Sabina and Jovany crashed with the most adverse conditions at the border like white slavery, the Mexican and American migratory agents Burrona and Patrick, the brothel matron Doña Lita, Don Nico the Mexican Consul in Tecún Umán, the drug trafficking networks, the army and la Mara Salvatrucha. DVD Release Date: January 18th, 2016

The Weather Station - Two cops must unravel a mystery in one of the most forbidding locales on Earth in this thriller, shot in Russia by Irish filmmaker Johnny O'Reilly. Andrey (Alexei Guskov) and Slava (Anton Shagin) are a pair of police detectives who've been dispatched to a remote weather station in the Russian arctic after the two meteorologists in charge, Drozdov (Sergey Garmash) and Ivanov (Vladimir Gusev), abruptly lose contact with their superiors. Both Drozdov and Ivanov are experienced weather monitors who have interests to keep them occupied during the long months of isolation -- Drozdov studies lore about the Abominable Snowman, while Ivanov builds sculptures from household objects -- but their new housekeeper, a disturbed young man named Romash (Pyotr Logachev), doesn't fare so well and spends much of his free time in hiding. Soon the three men are joined by a wealthy businessman, Vadim (Sergey Yushkevich), and his young bride Irina (Marina Alexandrova), who got lost while exploring caves in the frozen wastes. But when Andrey and Slava arrive on the scene, the post is abandoned and in a shambles. What happened to the meteorologists and their guests? Is there a murderer on the prowl, or is the answer something more mysterious? DVD Release Date: January 18th, 2016

On Broadway - Emotionally devastated by the death of his uncle, Boston carpenter Jack O'Toole (McIntyre) writes a play inspired by the man's wake. When nobody will produce the play, Jack quits his job to produce it himself, imagining that this play will give a new start to the strained relationship Jack has with his father. But the only stage Jack can afford is in the back room of a neighbourhood pub. In this humble environment, Jack pulls together a theatre company of sorts and brings his story to the stage, and in the process he brings together his family and friends and helps them move beyond their loss. DVD Release Date: January 18th, 2016

In the Basement - Maverick director Seidl delves into yet another exploration of the dark underside of the human psyche with a look at Austrian basements fitted out as private domains for secrets and fetishes. No desire or proclivity is off limits to Seidl's camera, which takes in the opera-singing gunslinger, the Hitler-loving brass band, a hunter of exotic species, and the passionate devotees of S&M with an equal measure of curiosity and compassion. DVD Release Date: 12 January 12th, 2016
