BIG THANKS!: DVDBeaver would not exist without the support of many patrons - those who generously donate, and especially those who use our Amazon(s), CD Japan, HKFlix and YesAsia links. That's it. When you go to Amazon - PLEASE use one of our links to get there (they are on every page - top and bottom - and we have 5000 webpages). It costs you absolutely nothing and we get a small commission on items you purchase. This helps pay our bills - in fact it's the only thing that pays our bills.
STRATEGIES: The best way to take full advantage of Amazon is to use...
PRE-ORDERs - lock in at the discount price by ORDERING - if perchance you decide against the purchase you have until the release date to cancel - at no charge AND if you will purchase more than 35 DVDs (or anything) in a 365 day period (and live in the Continental US) it makes excellent financial sense to subscribe to Amazon
NOTE:_

If there are DVD titles you'd like us to cover - please feel free to recommend!

ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Still recuperating from the holiday festivities - so Brief, Brief, Brief! Criterion's Belle de Jour is a fabulous Blu-ray package, as is the nostalgia of Godzilla. Masters of Cinema's Le Silence de la Mer is stunning - evoking Bresson at every turn. I got right into Contagion on Blu-ray - great Home Theater entertainment. And speaking of Soderbergh - Criterion's Traffic should be considered for the extensive supplements. And Oliver Stone's Salvador is an impacting film presence. Eric's has me intrigued with Murder Obsession and Lovely By Surprise looks... pretty weird! Enjoy the first week of the year!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Contagion BD - "Contagion" follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic... grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart. Starring Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, and Laurence Fishburne. Blu-ray Release date: January 3rd, 2012

Traffic BD - Intertwining vignettes frame this tale of America's escalating War on Drugs. Ohio Supreme Court judge Robert Wakefield has been appointed the nation's Drug Czar, his new position made more daunting by the discovery that his teenage daughter Caroline is a heroin addict. Meanwhile, DEA agents Montel Gordon and Ray Castro are pursuing Helena Ayala, wife of jailed kingpin Carlos Ayala, as she seeks to the control the business that her husband had kept hidden from her. South of the Border, duplicitous local constable Javier Rodriguez is fighting the battle with his own jaded, questionable ethical code. Blu-ray Release Date: January 17th, 2012

Godzilla BD - Godzilla (a.k.a. Gojira) is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama, made in Japan at a time when the country was reeling from nuclear attack and H-bomb testing in the Pacific. Its rampaging radioactive beast, the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears, became a beloved international icon of destruction, spawning almost thirty sequels. A thrilling, tactile spectacle that continues to be a cult phenomenon. Blu-ray Release Date: January 24th, 2012

Belle de Jour BD - Catherine Deneuve’s porcelain perfection hides a cracked interior in one of the actress’s most iconic roles: Séverine, a Paris housewife who begins secretly spending her afternoon hours working in a bordello. This surreal and erotic late-sixties daydream from provocateur for the ages Luis Buñuel is an examination of desire and fetishistic pleasure (its characters’ and its viewers’), as well as a gently absurdist take on contemporary social mores and class divisions. Fantasy and reality commingle in this burst of cinematic transgression, which was one of Buñuel’s biggest hits. Blu-ray Release Date: January 17th, 2012

Murder Obsession - With enough aliases to fill a hotel ledger, this downbeat horror film by Riccardo Fredo focuses on the past and present of Michael Stanford (Stefano Patrizi), a successful actor. His father was knifed to death years ago and now Michael and his girlfriend Deborah (Silvia Dionisio) are going to spend a week-end with Michael's mother. Joining them are the director and crew of a motion picture in the works. Oliver the housekeeper (John Richardson) does not extend a warm welcome to the guests, but that might just be his personality. After everyone is settled in, a deranged killer begins a series of murders. Is the occult at the heart of these killings? Or are Michael's fears about the past starting to come true? DVD Release Date: December 6th, 2011

Le Silence de la Mer BD - Melville's extraordinary first feature, an adaptation of Vercors' classic novella about the French Resistance, is in effect a triangular drama in which two people don't speak. A German officer (Vernon), convalescing from a wound, is billeted on an elderly Frenchman (Robain) and his niece (Stéphane). Respecting their obstinate refusal to address the hated invader, he meets their silence with a series of monologues, apparently ignored, in which he recalls his life before the war and all the things he values; but what he reveals about himself causes the girl to fall in love, without being able to declare her feelings. Filmed in the most daring way imaginable, using a new cinematic language of transient expressions and glances, the film was a root influence on Bresson and the whole French New Wave. Blu-ray Release Date: January 23rd, 2012

Salvador BD - Salvador recounts the conflict between the peasant revolution and the US-backed death squads in El Salvador in the early 1980s as seen through the eyes of American journalist Richard Boyle. Telling unpalatable truths condensed into intense fiction, Oliver Stone's film is typically confrontational, the real Boyle writing the source material for Stone's savage screenplay. The journalist is brought to life by James Woods in a brilliant hyper-kinetic performance: his powerful commitment to the truth balances his self-destructive, drink, drugs and danger-fuelled personality. Providing excellent support is James Belushi as partner in debauchery Dr Rock, while Stone delivers the most spectacular $4 million movie imaginable by conning the El Salvadorian military into lending tanks, planes and helicopters for a film which brands many of their leaders as war criminals. Blu-ray Release date: January 29th, 2010

Lovely By Surprise - Facing the age-old problem of writer's block, novelist Marian Walker (Carrie Preston) turns to her mentor and ex-lover, Jackson (Austin Pendleton). But his seemingly innocent advice to kill the book's protagonist unexpectedly leads one of her willful characters (Michael Chernus) to escape from the novel and stir up the unresolved issues in her life. DVD Release Date: December 26th, 2011
