(aka "Mon Roi" )

directed by Maïwenn
France 2015

"We'll only have good times together," Georgio (Vincent Cassel, LA HAINE tells his pregnant bride Tony (Emmanuelle Bercot, INNER CITY) as a way of explaining his plan to have a separate apartment to escape to when they fight in HIGH TENSION actress-turned-director Maïwenn's follow-up to 2011's POLISSE. A tale of amour fou after marriage, MY KING finds lawyer Tony making the first move on overgrown teen playboy restaurateur Georgio but is herself swept off her feet when he expresses the desire to settle down with a "normal girl" and demands a baby from her. Whether or not she has always desired to have a child and a family, that is now the desire she expresses to her brother Solal (Louis Garrel, REGULAR LOVERS) who is the only one in the family who has not warmed to Georgio. She forgives Georgio's little backslides - including his codependent relationship with model Agnes (Chrystèle Saint Louis Augustin, CELEBRITY) who overdoses when she learns Tony is pregnant but nevertheless becomes "Aunty Agnes" to the newborn - as she uncovers a host of insecurities he masks with alcohol and medication, but soon finds herself self-medicating to mask her own depression as Georgio slips away from her. The relationship is shown as a series of flashbacks as Tony undergoes in-patient physical rehabilitation for a skiing "accident" (her doctor resorts to pop psychology to explain the significance of knee injuries to emotional well-being), reflecting on the worst of her marriage with a clear head as she learns to walk again and makes friends with fellow patients and searching for an explanation to her son Simbad about why she and daddy are no longer together beyond "it stopped being fun."

Comments

Film Movement's progressive, anamorphic dual-layer encode of MY KING has a certain softness and digital flatness that seems to be due more to the camerawork than the encode. A degree of edge enhancement is present but no more than we seen with some other HD-to-SD MPEG-2 downscaling. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is generally front-oriented but the surrounds are active with varying degrees of atmosphere in the exteriors. Both optional English subtitles and closed captioning are included. The only extras related to the film are a deleted scenes, outtakes, and the trailer, but the disc does contain director Maïwenn's earlier short film "I am an Actress".
