ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Criterion's Blu-ray package of 2 Monte Hellman westerns, The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind, gets top spot this week with audio commentaries on both films and many interviews. I also enjoyed the BFI Blu-ray of Val Guest's The Day the Earth Caught Fire - the new restoration has some significant differences to the SD. There were two Silent Era films put to Blu-ray; Raoul Walsh directs the 1924 The The Thief of Bagdad and we've compared new Masters of Cinema package and we've been privy to Kino's new The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Blu-ray - also compared. I noted the vastly improved transfer of the new Blu-ray of the western More Dead Than Alive with the hulking Clint Walker and Louise Malle's fun Viva Maria! with Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau. Those interested in the nostalgia of the 3-D craze may wish to invest in the sci-fi effort The Bubble 3-D on Blu-ray. Fans of Burt Reynolds' southern-tough guy character Gator McKlusky should indulge in White Lightning on Kino Blu-ray. On DVD this week, Eric covered Fog and Crimes - Season One - a highly regarded Italian, mystery, TV series.. See you next week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The Thief of Bagdad BD - This swashbuckling tale out of The Thousand and One Nights was Hollywood mega-star and producer Douglas Fairbanks' pet project, and coming on the heels of previous costume successes The Three Musketeers, The Mark of Zorro, and Robin Hood, cemented Fairbanks' standing as both the leading action-adventure star of his day and one of the industry's first "multi-hypenate" powerhouses. The actor stars as the impious thief Ahmed who has made a reputation as Baghdad's premiere plunderer. When he falls in love with a beautiful princess (Julanne Johnston) and the two determine to marry, her father the caliph intervenes, forbidding the union. Thus erupts a chain of circumstances involving a crystal ball, a magic apple, a pegasus, an invisibility cloak... and, of course, a flying carpet. Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Release Date: November 24th, 2014

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari BD - Undoubtedly one of the most exciting and inspired horror movies ever made. The story is a classic sampling of expressionist paranoia about a hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to do his murders, full of the gloom and fear that prevailed in Germany as it emerged from WWI. There are plenty of extremely boring sociological/critical accounts of the film; best to avoid them and enjoy the film's extraordinary use of painted light and Veidt's marvellous performance. Incidentally, the influence of Caligari on the cinema is much more problematic than some historians suppose. Thematically it has rarely been copied, and the style only really infiltrated in dream sequences and other odd devices. Kino Blu-ray Release Date: November 18th, 2014

More Dead Than Alive BD - Saddle up for a thrilling tale of heroes and villains in this "thought-provoking" western with "an ending that is truly different" (Film and Television Daily). Starring "tall, dark and handsome" (Hollywood Citizen-News) Clint Walker (Sam Whiskey) and the legendary Vincent Price (The Last Man on Earth) in one of his most colorful roles, this action-packed drama aims high and hits its mark! After serving 18 years, "Killer" Cain (Walker) is released from prison, determined never to touch a gun again. But the only job he can get is with Dan Ruffalo's (Price) traveling sideshow as the sharp-shooting main attraction. As Cain works to build an honest future free of bullets and bloodshed, his enemies look to settle old scores. Now Cain must risk his new life to become the "Killer" once more…or be haunted by his past forever. Blu-ray Release Date: November 11th, 2014

Viva Maria! BD - Director Louis Malle and co-writer Jean-Claude Carriere satirizes everything from American westerns to revolutions, dictators, the Church, priesthood and even sex itself! When two women – both named Maria – unwittingly invent the striptease circa 1910, they become such a hit that enthusiastic audiences strip along with them! But when one of the Marias falls for a handsome revolutionary (George Hamilton), she finds that she has unwittingly embroiled the two of them in an armed peasant revolt! Blu-ray Release Date: November 4th, 2014

The Bubble 3-D BD - The eye-popping thrills and chills begin when a plane carrying pregnant Catherine (Deborah Walley) and her husband Mark (Michael Cole) is forced to land in a mysterious remote town. The townspeople are quite strange, indeed: they repeat certain phrases and movements ceaselessly and stagger through the streets like brain-dead automatons. Then there is an even more terrifying discovery - the zombie inhabitants live under an impenetrable dome, trapped like insects in a jar. Can Catherine, Mark and their newborn baby escape The Bubble, or will they become mindless drones trapped in a human zoo? Blu-ray Release date: November 18th, 2014

The Day the Earth Caught Fire BD - Val Guest writes and directs this sci-fi drama. After global nuclear testing knocks the world off its axis, temperatures begin to rise rapidly as the planet is sent careering towards the sun. In London the heat is causing the Thames to dry up as baffled Daily Express reporter Peter Stenning (Edward Judd), his colleague Bill Maguire (Leo McKern), and his girlfriend Jeanne Craig (Janet Munro), resolve to get to the bottom of the matter. After battling the Government for the truth, they are shocked to discover the fate of their planet and must search for a solution before it's too late. Blu-ray Release Date: November 17th, 2014

The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind BD - In the mid-sixties, the maverick American director Monte Hellman conceived of two westerns at the same time. Dreamlike and gritty by turns, the two films would prove their maker's adeptness at brilliantly deconstructing genre. As shot back-to-back for famed producer Roger Corman, they feature overlapping casts and crews, including Jack Nicholson in two of his meatiest early roles. The films -The Shooting, about a motley assortment of loners following a mysterious wanted man through a desolate frontier, and Ride in the Whirlwind, about a group of cowhands pursued by vigilantes for crimes they did not commit - are rigorous, artful, and wholly unconventional journeys into the American West. Blu-ray Release date: November 11th, 2014

White Lightning BD - "White lightning," of course, is another term for moonshine whiskey, the basis for this tale of backwoods intrigue and action. Reynolds is Gator, a bootlegger enlisted by the Treasury Department (or what Granny Clampett used to call "revenooers") to nab the corrupt (what else?) and bigoted Sheriff Connors, played by Ned Beatty, who had co-starred with Reynolds in Deliverance. Connors has his own moonshine business operating on the side. The lawman was also responsible for the death of Gator's brother, and that provides his real motive for working with the Feds. With the help of a souped-up car, another bootlegger (Bo Hopkins), and a sexy girlfriend (Jennifer Billingsley), Gator gets the goods on the sheriff. But not before engaging in the major delight and raison d'etre of movies of this type the uproarious antics of stunt drivers on dirt roads and through the swamps of the film's Arkansas location shoot. Blu-ray Release date: November 11th, 2014

Fog and Crimes - Season One - Inspired by the four famous novels by Valerio Varesi, each episode follows an investigation by Soneri, Ferrara Police Chief. He works with a faithful squad on a series of crimes, each hiding a disturbing mystery, with the startling and grotesque undertones of the apparently calm world of the wealthy countryside. DVD Release Date: October 27th, 2014
