ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): It is impossible to position one of our top three Blu-ray packages this week ahead of the other two. If we go by most recently reviewed, Universal's new Stanley Kubrick-directed Spartacus (Restored) BD is a jaw-dropping upgrade over the 2012 Blu-ray. Possibly, the easiest purchase of the year. Criterion does David Lynch is enough of a thrill - how about a 4K, director-approved, Blu-ray transfer of Mulholland Drive?... looking stunning in your Home Theatre? Am I dreaming? and Masaki Kobayashi's memorable Kwaidan defines the presentation as the definitive for the 'original cut' of this masterpiece on Criterion Blu-ray. Massive. For those versed in the genre, Flicker Alley's Blu-ray of Masterworks of American Avant-garde Experimental Film 1920-1970 is an essential - a premiere position in any avante-garde digital library. Kino Lorber shows an impressive upgrade with Rupert Julian's The Phantom of the Opera (1925 + 1929) 2 Blu-ray package with very strong visual results. Awesome. Karel Reisz' Isadora with Vanessa Redgrave is a wonderful bio-pic and it's now on region FREE Blu-ray from Odeon Entertainment in the UK. Cushing. Lee. Freddie Francis. Amicus. The Skull. Blu-ray. Buy. Nicholas Meyer's Company Business with Gene Hackman has many appealing thriller qualities. The Blu-ray is definitely worth your consideration. Burt plays Burt in Malone - a simple, violent, revenge-justice based pop-corner that is now available on Blu-ray. You could do worse. We'll finish with two Lee Van Cleef westerns on Blu-ray - I certainly enjoyed Captain Apache more than Bad Man's River but the actor has his own unique charisma for the genre fan..... Henry Stevenson (Burt Lancaster) to wife Leona (Barbara Stanwyck): “I want you to do something. I want you to get yourself out of the bed, and get over to the window and scream as loud as you can. Otherwise you only have another three minutes to live.” . Work. Rest. Relax. Cinema.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Isadora BD - Isadora Duncan was the most iconic free-style dancer of the twentieth century who courted both admiration and scandal in equal measure. Her unique style of dancing made her the guests of King's, Queen's, nobility and Russian revolutionaries, ultimately making her the `peoples` dancer`. But her Bohemian lifestyle and unorthodox morality led to a personal life that was marred by misunderstanding, tragedy and ultimately her own untimely death. Available for the first time with an enormous selection of extras, this Oscar and BAFTA nominated film stars Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave in a stunning portrayal of Isadora Duncan. Blu-ray Release date: May 18th, 2015

Spartacus (Restored) BD - Stanley Kubrick directed a cast of screen legends – including Kirk Douglas as the indomitable gladiator that led a Roman slave revolt – in the sweeping epic that defined a genre and ushered in a new Holywood era. The assured acting, lush Technicolor cinematography, bold costumes and visceral fight sequences won Spartacus four Oscars; the blend of politics and sexual suggestion scandalized audiences. Today Kubrick’s controversial classic, the first film to openly defy Hollywood’s blacklist, remains a landmark of cinematic artistry and history. Blu-ray Release Date: October 6th, 2015

Malone BD - Burt Reynolds as a former CIA agent who runs up against a fanatical group of right-wing survivalists trying to take over a small Oregon community. Some anonymous work from Reynolds, as well as the rest of the cast, but director Harley Cokliss obviously wants it that way. Cokliss, whose Black Moon Rising set some kind of record for action dissociation, puts the same sensibility to work here: faces loom with an odd King Vidor-esque monumentality, and Cokliss never seems so happy as when he's stylishly blowing things up or finding eccentric camera angles to frame the fractured narrative. Blu-ray Release date: October 13th, 2015

The Phantom of the Opera (1925 + 1929) BD - When film director Rupert Julian was presented with the script for The Phantom of the Opera, he declared simply: "Lon Chaney, or it can't be done!" For the film, "the man of a thousand faces" transformed himself into his most recognizable character. Using chemicals to dilate his pupils, cotton and celluloid discs to heighten his cheekbones, fanged teeth to create a horrific grin and wires to pull his nose upwards, Chaney became the menacing Phantom who lurks in Box 5 of the Opera - and in the dark cellars below. Blu-ray Release Date: October 13th, 2015

Masterworks of American Avant-garde Experimental Film 1920-1970 BD - A premiere collection of 37 films created by some of the most acclaimed names of American Avant-garde experimental filmmaking, including Charles Sheeler, Paul Strand, Fernand Le ger, James Agee, Amy Greenfield, Phil Solomon, Stan Brakhage and many more. To watch these films is to see the world anew through innovative cinematic interventions: fast cutting, expressive camerawork, abstract animation, surrealistic collage, distorted and superimposed imagery, and many more extraordinary techniques. Essentially the filmmakers ask us to open our eyes and see, to permit the reception of pure sensations uninhibited by any complex web of predetermined associations dominant in mainstream Hollywood film and television. Blu-ray Release date: October 6th, 2015

Kwaidan BD - Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, Kwaidan features four nightmarish tales adapted from Lafcadio Hearn's classic Japanese ghost stories. For this lavish, 'scope production, Kobayashi drew extensively on his own training as a student of painting and the fine arts. Indeed, the breadth of the film's poetic expression is unmatched in all of Japanese cinema: breathtakingly photographed on handpainted sets, the film is at once a miniature writ large, and an abstract wash of luminescent colors that seem to hail from another world. On the soundtrack, an electronic score by avant-garde composer Toru Takemitsu plays hauntingly with the natural sounds — crickets, rain, the cracking of wood, the loud silence of snow. Blu-ray Release Date: October 20th, 2015

Mulholland Drive BD - Blonde Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) has only just arrived in Hollywood to become a movie star when she meets an enigmatic brunette with amnesia (Laura Harring). Meanwhile, as the two set off to solve the second woman’s identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project. David Lynch’s seductive and scary vision of Los Angeles’s dream factory is one of the true masterpieces of the new millennium, a tale of love, jealousy, and revenge like no other. Blu-ray Release Date: October 27th, 2015

The Skull BD - Peter Cushing stars as Dr. Christopher Maitland, a writer and collector of occult items (with a preference for those with a somewhat macabre history), who is offered the chance to purchase a highly expensive and unusual item the skull of the Marquis de Sade. Warned against obtaining the item by fellow collector (Christopher Lee in a rare non-villainous role), the skull s influence draws Maitland in, madness and death soon follow... Blu-ray Release date: October 26th, 2015

Company Business BD - The demise of the Cold War rendered this flat and obsolete spy thriller, written and directed by Nicholas Meyer, mute upon its release in 1991. Gene Hackman plays Sam Boyd, a retired CIA agent, now making ends meet by engaging in industrial espionage. But Sam is recalled to duty and ordered to deliver a captured Russian spy, Pyiotr Grushenko (Mikhail Baryshnikov), to East Berlin for a prisoner exchange. Along with Pyiotr, Sam is also transporting $2 million in Columbian drug money to East Berlin. But due to a series of set-ups, Sam and Pyiotr finds themselves working together to keep from getting killed. Sam tries to get help from the CIA, but it turns out that the CIA (along with the KGB) wants them both dead. Blu-ray Release date: October 6th, 2015

Captain Apache BD - This is "Captain Apache," whose mean, funny opening line, not suitable to a family newspaper, pegs the entire jape. Anyway, this slapdash slaughterfest has Lee Van Cleef, as an iron-jawed Indian captain in the Union Army, trying to solve an officer's murder. Peering in, under the broiling sun, are such artists as Carroll Baker and Stuart Whitman, who must have been hankering for Hollywood greenery. Generally, under Alexander Singer's direction, the film simply lets fly, as the chips and bodies fall. In the last reel the story rather snugly works in a surprise or two aboard one of those old-time trains, carring the principals. You can't criticize a choo-choo. Blu-ray Release date: October 6th, 2015

Bad Man's River BD - Roy King (Lee Van Cleef) is a wanted bank robber out west, who after his last job in El Paso meets on a train the attractive widow Alicia (Gina Lollobrigida) and marries her when he learns she's traveling with a priest, only to find she ties him up and escapes with the bank loot as he's taken off the train to a loony bin on her request. Later, after he breaks out of the loony bin, she gets him and his gang a job through her next husband, the Mexican diplomat double-agent revolutionary, Francisco Montero (James Mason), to blow up the arsenal of the Mexican army at their headquarters. When the mission is accomplished, there's no payoff of the $10,000 promised but a promise of a million dollars if King and his gang pull off the next job. Alicia explains that now the Mexican government will spend a million dollars to buy new guns through Montero, and King will steal the money from Montero. Blu-ray Release date: October 6th, 2015
