ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): There are so many great releases this week I don't know where to start. Despite three excellent Criterion packages reviewed, I'm going to choose The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst as the top pick this week. A mind-blowing documentary on bare-bones Blu-ray - great value - watch this! The Honeymoon Killers is deserved of all its extensive accolades and Criterion's new 4K Blu-ray restoration transfer supports the film to its highest level. Another strongly recommended documentary is Wim Wenders' The Salt of the Earth about photographer Sebastião Salgado on Artificial Eye Blu-ray - as is Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Dance of Reality which washes its eccentricities, its colors and taboo-leanings across the screen. A wild, touchingly human film experience that, visually, you will not soon forget on dual-layered UK Blu-ray. I've always liked the western Man With the Gun with Robert Mitchum and the new Blu-ray shows the film in widescreen and 1080P resolution. Merchant Ivory Productions' A Room With a View has never looked better for home theatre consumption as it does on Criterion's new Blu-ray. Strongly endorsed! My opinion of John Sturges' The Satan Bug significantly advanced by seeing the new Kino Blu-ray and indulging in the commentary. A huge advance over the old DVD. Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho gets a whole new look on Blu-ray from Criterion's new, restored 4K digital transfer. It positively provides a different experience from the viewer's standpoint. I enjoyed the stylish Giallo The Bloodstained Shadow on Blu-ray from 88 Films in the UK. Staying with horror, Arrow go to town with their Blu-ray of Tobe Hooper's Crocodile-infused screm-fest on the Bayou; Eaten Alive - a giant leap beyond the old DVD. Ken Loach's powerful political gem Hidden Agenda get a Blu-ray treatment. Ted Kotcheff's Billy Two Hats is a unique buddy-western worth a spin on Blu-ray for fans of the genre. Defiance marginally succeeds despite its one-dimensional revenge-based premise. Despite the strong story-line of Hornet's Nest with Rock Hudson it never really comes together, but is available on Blu-ray now. On DVD Eric covered strongly rated Bulgarian drama The Lesson, the German film The Chambermaid about a socially crippled woman and all-new BBC TV adaptation of Agatha Christie's Partners in Crime...... "Your goals, minus your doubts, equal your reality". - Ralph Marston.   Enjoy your Labor Day holiday!.

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

A Room With a View BD - Merchant Ivory Productions, led by director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant, became a household name with A Room with a View, the first of their extraordinary adaptations of E. M. Forster novels. A cherubic nineteen-year-old Helena Bonham Carter plays Lucy Honeychurch, a young, independent- minded, upper-class Edwardian woman who is trying to sort out her burgeoning romantic feelings, divided between an enigmatic free spirit (Julian Sands) she meets on vacation in Florence and the priggish bookworm (Daniel Day-Lewis) to whom she becomes engaged back in the more corseted Surrey. Funny, sexy, and sophisticated, this gargantuan art-house hit features a sublime supporting cast–including. Blu-ray Release date: September 29th, 2015

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst BD - Robert Durst, scion of NY’s billionaire real estate family has been accused of three murders over the past 30 years, but never convicted. Brilliant and reclusive, he has not spoken publicly – until now. HBO presents the The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, the groundbreaking six-part series that tracks Durst's strange history against the backdrop of unimaginable wealth and privilege. Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2015

Eaten Alive BD - Deep in the Louisiana bayou sits the ramshackle Starlight Hotel, destination of choice for those who like to check in but not check out! Presided over by the bumbling, mumbling Judd (and his pet croc which he keeps in a large pond out front), the patron of this particular establishment may seem like a good-natured ol' Southern gent - but he has a mean temper on him, and a mighty large scythe to boot... Blu-ray Release Date: September 22nd, 2015

The Dance of Reality BD - The Dance of Reality, written, produced and directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky is a mystical autobiography of Jodorowsky s childhood, blending his personal history with metaphor, mythology and poetry. The film reflects the director s view that reality is not objective but rather a dance created by our imaginations. After its world premiere at Cannes in 2013 and US premiere at SXSW in 2014, the film has received universal praise from all media outlets including the New York Times which hailed it as a near masterpiece and a NY Times Critics pick. Blu-ray Release date: September 14th, 2015

Billy Two Hats BD - Though Desi Arnaz plays the title role, Gregory Peck is top billed in Billy Two Hats. Arnaz plays a thief who teams up with Scottish bank bandit Peck. A botched robbery results in a tiny amount of cash and an accidental killing. Peck rescues the captured Billy, enduring a leg wound in the process. While resting in the home of an old rancher, Peck goes off in search of a doctor, while Billy enjoys the sexual favors of the rancher's young wife. This interruption in the bandits' escape enables Indian-hating sheriff Jack Warden to catch up with Arnaz and Peck. A last-reel shoot-out ensues, involving sheriff's deputies, the rancher, and a band of Indian renegades. Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2015

My Own Private Idaho BD - River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves star in director Gus Van Sant’s haunting tale of two young street hustlers: Mike Waters, a sensitive narcoleptic who dreams of the mother who abandoned him, and Scott Favor, wayward son of the mayor of Portland and the object of Mike’s desire. Navigating a volatile world of junkies, thieves, and johns, Mike takes Scott on a quest from the grungy streets to the open highways of the Pacific Northwest, in search of an elusive place called “home.” Groundbreaking and visually dazzling, My Own Private Idaho is a stirring look at unrequited love and life at society’s margins. Blu-ray Release Date: October 6th, 2015

The Honeymoon Killers BD - Martha Beck (Shirley Stoler) is sullen, overweight and heartbreakingly alone. Desperate for affection, she joins Aunt Carrie’s Friendship Club and strikes up a correspondence with Ray Fernandez (Tony Lo Bianco), a suave, charismatic smooth talker who could be the man of her dreams—or a wicked con artist bound for trouble. Based on a true story and filmed in documentary-style black and white, The Honeymoon Killers is a stark portrayal of the desperate lengths to which a lonely heart will go to find true love, from brutally immoral killings to a passion that transcends all bounds. Blu-ray Release Date: September 29th, 2015

Man With the Gun BD - A striking, compact first feature from esteemed screenwriter Wilson. Mitchum is the taciturn 'town-tamer', whose extreme methods of law enforcement are available for hire when local marshals have run out of options. Arriving in a frontier community to look up old-flame Sterling, he finds himself engaged in lethally dismantling the influence of the area's Mr Big. His ruthless efficiency has the townsfolk appalled, but Mitchum, scarred by childhood memories which saw his unarmed father gunned down, channels his inner demons into the task at hand. It's among his finest performances, but by no means a one-man show, given Wilson's deft placement of wry humour amid the carnage, and North's fine score expressing the sense of an open-air America ill at ease with itself. Forget the unofficial Michael Winner remake Lawman. Blu-ray Release Date: September 29th, 2015

The Satan Bug BD - Adapted from an Alistair MacLean novel, The Satan Bug is one of the best efforts in the "deadly virus at large" genre. Insane scientist Dr. Hoffman (Richard Basehart) steals several vials containing a lethal germ culture from a government lab. Hoffman has been unhinged by the notion of the government playing God and now it's his turn to do the same. Hot on his trail are Lee Barrett, a scientific investigator (George Maharis) and Ann, a general's daughter (Anne Francis). The climax, which seems to have been borrowed from the 1939 Bela Lugosi serial The Phantom Creeps, finds Maharis wrestling with the controls of a runaway helicopter, wherein the deadly vials are being jostled about. Blu-ray Release Date: September 22nd, 2015

Hidden Agenda BD - This political thriller is set against the backdrop of Northern Ireland's "Troubles" and directed in the documentary fashion common to British filmmaker Ken Loach's films. Paul Sullivan (Brad Dourif) and Ingrid Jessner (Frances McDormand) are American attorneys serving on a human rights group working to monitor cases of prisoner mistreatment in war-torn Belfast. When Paul learns of some information that may be injurious to the Thatcher government, he is killed, and a top-secret tape disappears. Assigned to the case, Inspector Kerrigan (Brian Cox) is joined by Ingrid in probing Paul's death, which seems to be related to rumors of a high-ranking cabal within the British government working to undermine the Irish Republican Army and liberal policies toward Irish separatists through violent and illegal means. Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2015

The Bloodstained Shadow BD - Antonio Bido ("Watch Me When I Kill") helms his second and last giallo (Italian for yellow, which is derived from the covers of the pulp paperback thrillers on which many of these films from the 1960s through the 1970s were based on), and co-writes with Marisa Andalo and Domenico Malan this set in Venice twisty suspense story, that's neither good nor bad. It suffers from a poor script, a poor dubbing translation and a lack of character development. But it's well-crafted, features one of the last scores by the noted jazzy state of the art giallo inspired musicians called Goblin, is adequately paced (though it could have trimmed 20 minutes, including an unnecessary soft-core sex scene and been the better off for it) and its photography of Venice's labyrinthine streets and canals and the eerie rustic island village are eye-catching. Blu-ray Release date: May 25th, 2015

The Salt of the Earth BD - For the last 40 years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He has witnessed some of the major events of our recent history; international conflicts, starvation and exodus. He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of wild fauna and flora, and of grandiose landscapes as part of a huge photographic project which is a tribute to the planet s beauty. Sebastião Salgado's life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last travels, and by Wim Wenders, himself a photographer. Blu-ray Release date: September 14th, 2015

Defiance BD - Although it is far from a perfectly contrived drama, Defiance has its moments of high emotions and rising fear. Tommy (Jan Michael Vincent) takes up temporary housing in a New York neighborhood plagued by a violent gang, the Souls. Tommy is waiting for his next assignment as a seaman and though he tries to avoid the gang and his neighbors, it does not work. Soon he is single-handedly battling the Souls and not only changing their attitudes, but the attitudes of his previously intimidated neighbors as well. They quickly back him up as the one person who can make the neighborhood safe again. Blu-ray Release date: September 8th, 2015

Hornet's Nest BD - Captain Turner (Rock Hudson) is the American paratrooper who employs Italian children to blow up a strategic dam controlled by the Nazis. He is the only survivor of his unit gunned down during the jump. Rescued by the moppets, he slaps and rapes German medico Bianca (Sylva Koscina), which implausibly leads her to trust Turner and help in the clandestine mission. Aldo (Mark Colleano) is the youthful leader who helps Turner carry out the bombing in exchange for an attack on his village. When the Nazis control the small town, their allegiance quickly changes as they fight the Germans they once considered allies. Blu-ray Release date: September 8th, 2015

The Chambermaid - Lynn is the most thorough chambermaid at the hotel where she works. Crippled by her own shyness, she rummages through the guests belongings and even hides under their beds, vicariously experiencing their discreet interludes. When she finds herself present during a session with the call girl Chiara, Lynn cannot help but let her curiosity get the better of her. Bold and unrestrained, Chiara soon draws Lynn out of her shell, opening her up to a new intimacy Lynn had previously only experienced as an intrepid voyeur. DVD Release Date: September 1st, 2015

The Lesson - Nade is an honest, hard-working elementary school teacher struggling to keep her life together. With the home she shares with her husband and young daughter on the brink of repossession and no money to her name Nade resorts to measures her former self, untouched by the realities of economic desperation and moral compromise, would have found depraved, as she makes one last extreme effort to secure the money she needs. DVD Release Date: September 1st, 2015

Agatha Christie's Partners in Crime - Agatha Christie’s famed sleuthing duo come to the screen in an exciting all-new BBC T V adaptation starring David Walliams and Jessica Raine as Partners in Crime. Set in the leafy suburbs of 1950s London, Partners in Crime finds Tommy and Tuppence Beresford in need of some adventure in their lives. With Tommy undertaking a variety of business opportunities, and Tuppence trying to dissuade him, the couple find themselves in the wrong place at the right time to solve a mystery – or two – and perhaps save someone’s life. They are about to enter a world of espionage and skulduggery guided by Tommy’s mysterious Uncle, Major Carter. It is a world which will prove easier to enter than to leave. This six part drama draws on two classic novels by Agatha Christie: The Secret Adversary and N or M? DVD Release Date: August 31st, 2015
