ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Bertolucci's 1900 looks to have come through very solidly on Olive Films new Blu-ray transfer. Very pleasing to have this unforgettable film in such a strong 1080P transfer. Criterion's Blu-ray of Hal Ashby's Harold and Maude makes for a sweet, and very worthy, package. Super film. Also Criterion have upgraded from the AE Blu-ray of Kiarostami's Certified Copy and e suspect that the Japanese Blu-ray quality of David Lynch's Eraserhead will be indicative of the future individual and boxset releases. Miyazaki's Ghibli-esque adventure Castle in the Sky looks and sounds excellent on Disney's new Blu-ray. I liked The Grey as a survival tale with protagonists, including Liam Neeson, battling a pack of vicious wolves. Giallo lovers will gravitate to Raro's new Blu-ray of Murder Obsession - a tense horror mystery filled with that genre's funky style. The Pilot of for the TV Detective series Harry O, starring David Janssen; Smile Jenny, You're Dead has a pre-Taxi Driver Jodie Foster as a homeless beach urchin. It makes for some good viewing via the Warner Archive. Take more walks! - have a happy week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Castle in the Sky BD - From acclaimed Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki (2002, best animated feature, Spirited Away). Pazu, an engineer's apprentice, finds a young girl, Sheeta, floating down from the sky, and discovers they are both searching for a legendary floating island, Laputa. Together, they embark on a daring quest and encounter greedy air pirates, secret agents, and astounding obstacles that keep them from the truth - and each other. Blu-ray Release Date: May 22nd, 2012

The Grey BD - Liam Neeson (Schindler's List, Taken) stars as the unlikely hero Ottway in this undeniably suspenseful and powerful survival adventure. After their plane crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness, a roughneck group of oil drillers is forced to find a way back to civilization. As Ottway leads the injured survivors through the brutal snow and ice, they are relentlessly tracked by a vicious pack of rogue wolves that will do anything to defend their territory. Blu-ray Release date: May 15th, 2012

Smile Jenny, You're Dead - Harry Orwell has been retired from the force ever since he caught a bullet that lodged inoperably in his back. But that doesn’t mean the man called Harry O is out of the action. Moonlighting as a private sleuth, fighting off daily back pain and typically traveling by public bus instead of his own car (“It gives a man a chance to think”), he’s on the trail of the lowlife who murdered his pal’s son-in-law. It won’t be the only time the killer strikes before Harry closes in. David Janssen (The Fugitive) portrays dogged detective Harry in the telefilm that was the second of two pilots preceding his memorable Harry O series. Among the highlights: young Jodie Foster as Liberty, the wise-beyond-her-years homeless waif Harry befriends. DVD Release Date: August 1st, 2011

Certified Copy BD - From acclaimed director Abbas Kiarostami (Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us) comes the story of a couple's apparent chance meeting in beautiful Tuscany. He (William Shimell) is a British author in town to talk about his new book. She (Juliette Binoche) is a French gallery owner in search of originality. Together they tour the local galleries, cafes and museums and discover that nothing is quite what it seems and truth, like art, is always open to interpretation. A captivating film, Certified Copy marries post-modern reality games with mature romantic comedy in a single playful and provocative package. Blu-ray Release Date: May 22nd, 2012

Harold and Maude BD - With the idiosyncratic American fable Harold and Maude, countercultural director Hal Ashby fashioned what would become the cult classic of its era. Working from a script by Colin Higgins, Ashby tells the story of the emotional and romantic bond between a death-obsessed young man (Bud Cort) from a wealthy family and a devil-may-care, bohemian octogenarian (Ruth Gordon). Equal parts gallows humor and romantic innocence, Harold and Maude dissolves the line between darkness and light along with the ones that separate people by class, gender, and age, and it features indelible performances and a remarkable soundtrack by Cat Stevens. Blu-ray Release date: June 12th, 2012

Eraserhead BD - Eraserhead follows a sensitive young man as he struggles to cope with impending parenthood. Henry Spencer (Jack Nance) lives in a hopeless industrial landscape, lusting after the beautiful woman who lives in the apartment across the hall. Five years in the making, Eraserhead contains all of the trademark attributes of a Lynch film--haunting visuals, an ethereal score, unsettling sound design, and, most notably, a black sense of humour - creating a world onscreen that is exhilarating, terrifying, and truly unique. Blu-ray Release Date: April 27th, 2012

1900 BD - 1900 is an epic film of massive scope, power and controversy. It is both a vast history of the 20th Century Italy and an intimate portrait of two friends, both born on January 1, 1900. the son the socialist peasant farmer (Gerard Depardieu) and the son of the fascist landowner (Robert De Niro). The two young men pass through the upheavals of the modern world, as their personal conflicts become an allegory of the political turmoil of twentieth century Italy. 1900 features and award-winning international cast that includes Burt Lancaster, Donald Sutherland, Sterling Hayden, Dominique Sanda, Alida Valli and Stefania Sandrelli. Photographed by legendary cinematographer, Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now) with a beautiful and haunting score by Ennio Morricone (The Mission). Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor). Blu-ray Release Date: May 15th, 2012

Murder Obsession BD - While taking a break from shooting a horror film, actor Michael Stanford (Stephano Patrizi) visits his mother (Anita Strindberg) at their old mansion. Michael's girlfriend, Deborah (Silvia Dionisio), and some of their filmmaking friends join Michael at the mansion for a couple of days rest. Michael reveals that he murdered his father during a psychotic episode when he was a child making himself the primary suspect when his friends start getting killed.
