ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): I'll be brief this week. On Blu-ray, I liked Hirokazu Koreeda's Like Father, Like Son the most this past week. I enjoyed seeing Overlord again - now on Criterion Blu-ray. Stranger By the Lake was quite the experience. I found Home of the Brave a worthy viewing. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is a ton of fun for Noirists, but the Blu-ray is not premium. Johnny Come Lately will appeal to Cagney buffs. Amistad is both a fascinating historical and courtroom drama. The House on Sorority Row is in the upper tier of its genre. The Delta Force as Chuck Norris kicking terrorist butt. Flying Tigers is the first of John Wayne's many war films. Love Happy has The Marx brothers and Marilyn, while A Farewell to Arms has Rock and Jen Jones on Blu-ray. Eric DVD review has me keen to see Friedkin's The People vs. Paul Crump. I covered The Real Decameron and we also have a thriller entitled Truth.... “The story of life is quicker than the wink of an eye, the story of love is hello and goodbye...until we meet again” - Jimi Hendrix ...

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

The House on Sorority Row BD - Flirtatious young sorority sisters who are days away from graduation set out to throw one last decadent celebration. Unbeknownst to them, the strict matron of their house hides a horrendous secret thought long buried. A gruesome accident is witnessed by a hideous fiend, hidden within the once nurturing dwelling, which triggers a rampage of death and destruction. Before the end, the peril faced by this sisterhood will push them to the brink of annihilation. And rivers of blood will drown all who enter... The House On Sorority Row. Now see the cult classic in a 2 disc set, with a recent brand new HD master with additional color correction and the pre credit sequence re-color timed to director Mark Rossman's approval, to make this the final definite version! Blu-ray Release date: April 22nd, 2014

Flying Tigers BD - The Flying Tigers were a group of American volunteer aviators, flying against the Japanese on behalf of General Claire Chennault and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-Shek in the months just prior to World War II. John Wayne is the most responsible of the bunch, and John Carroll the least. It's bad enough that Carroll tries to beat Wayne's time with pretty Red Cross nurse Anna Lee; but when Carroll's negligence results in the death of veteran-flyer Paul Kelly, the man becomes a pariah to the rest of the pilots. Unable to serve in World War II due to health reasons, John Wayne spent the duration licking the Japanese and the Germans in front of a Republic Studios process screen. Blu-ray Release date: May 13th, 2014

Home of the Brave BD - Arthur Laurents' play Home of the Brave concerned a paralyzed Jewish war veteran who begins to walk again only when he confronts his fear of forever being an "outsider." The film version of the Laurents play changes the protagonist into an African-American, played by James Edwards. The soldier's comrades include his lifelong white friend Lloyd Bridges, whose death leaves Edwards racked with guilt; redneck-bigot corporal Steve Brodie; and troubled sergeant Frank Lovejoy. In the film's crucial scene, the doctor Jeff Corey forces Edwards to overcome his paralysis by yelling a racial slur; from this point on, Edwards will never again kowtow to prejudice. As corny and condescending as it may sound, Home of the Brave is one of the few films produced during the late-1940s "tolerance" cycle that plays as well today as it did when first released. Blu-ray Release date: May 13th, 2014

Amistad BD - This Steven Spielberg-directed exploration into a long-ago episode in African-American history recounts the trial that followed the 1839 rebellion aboard the Spanish slave ship Amistad and captures the complex political maneuverings set in motion by the event. Filmed in New England and Puerto Rico, the 152-minute drama opens with a pre-credit sequence showing Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) and the other Africans in a violent takeover of the Amistad. Captured, they are imprisoned in New England where former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman), viewing the rebels as "freedom fighters," approaches property lawyer Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), who attempts to prove the Africans were "stolen goods" because they were kidnapped. Blu-ray Release date: May 6th, 2014

Stranger By the Lake BD - One of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, STRANGER BY THE LAKE has been described as a modern-day Hitchcockian masterpiece. A picturesque cruising spot in the countryside of France sets the scene between desire and murder. Franck, a regular at the lake, meets the handsome Michel and soon falls in love with the mysterious stranger. When a body is discovered in the lake, Franck and Michel soon become primary suspects of the investigation. STRANGER BY THE LAKE is a unique, erotic thriller of seduction and sexual obsession that builds to an unforgettable and terrifying climax. Blu-ray Release date: May 12th, 2014

Like Father, Like Son BD - Ryota has earned everything he has by his hard work, and believes nothing can stop him from pursuing his perfect life as a winner. Then one day, he and his wife, Midori, get an unexpected phone call from the hospital. Their 6-year-old son, Keita, is not ‘their’ son – the hospital gave them the wrong baby. Ryota is forced to make a life-changing decision, to choose between ‘nature’ and ‘nurture.’ Seeing Midori’s devotion to Keita even after learning his origin, and communicating with the rough yet caring family that has raised his natural son for the last six years, Ryota also starts to question himself: has he really been a ‘father’ all these years… Blu-ray Release date: May 6th, 2014

The Delta Force BD - American Travel Ways Flight 282 has been hijacked by a group of terrorists claiming to represent the New World Revolutionary Organisation. The Delta Force, under the leadership of Captain Scott McCoy (Chuck Norris), is called in to handle the situation. Still smarting from an ill-fated hostage rescue mission several years prior, this elite squad of special forces are determined to succeed in their mission this time and assert the might of the American military once and for all. Blu-ray Release date: May 5th, 2014

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid BD - In this post-modernist exercise, star/writer Steve Martin and director Carl Reiner spoof the film noir yarns of the '40s with Martin playing gumshoe Rigby Reardon, who interacts with a legion of Hollywood greats -- including Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Edward Arnold, Barbara Stanwyck, Ingrid Bergman, Veronica Lake, Bette Davis, Lana Turner and Joan Crawford -- in a succession of intercut clips from seventeen vintage Hollywood films. Rigby is a low-rent detective (his fee is $10 per day) sitting in his office, waiting for something to happen. That something happens when the voluptuous Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward) arrives in his office and faints dead away at the sight of a newspaper that reports on her father's death in a car accident. Blu-ray Release date: February 4th, 2014

Johnny Come Lately BD - For his first independently-produced starring effort, James Cagney chose the sentimental drama Johnny Come Lately. Cagney plays itinerant newspaperman Tom Richards, who wanders into a small corruption-ridden town. Striking up a friendship with elderly Vinnie McLeod (Grace George in her only movie appearance), the editor of the local newspaper, Tom tries to help Vinnie exposed the community's crooked politicians. He is thwarted in his efforts until Gashouse Mary (Marjorie Main), a wealthy dowager with a shady past, exposes the machinations behind a phony Orphan's Fund. At the insistence of star Cagney, the cast of Johnny Come Lately was filled with familiar character actors (Hattie McDaniel, Edward McNamara, George Cleveland, Margaret Hamilton, Lucien Littlefield) who are herein offered a lot more screen time than was customary. Blu-ray Release date: May 6th, 2014

Love Happy BD - The Marx Brothers' final starring feature Love Happy began life as a solo vehicle for Harpo. The financiers wouldn't go for this, insisting that all three Marx boys appear on screen. Thus, Chico was hastily written into the proceedings, while Groucho made what amounted to a guest appearance as narrator and last-minute problem solver. The story concerns a group of aspiring actors who are putting together a musical review called "Love Happy." Harpo, the troupe's mascot, keeps the actors from starving by cleverly filching canned goods from a local grocer. On one such excursion, he accidentally gets hold of a sardine can containing a fortune in stolen diamonds. This makes Harpo the target of icy adventuress Madame Egilichi (Ilona Massey) and her henchmen (Melville Cooper, Raymond Burr, Bruce Gordon). When he isn't fending off the villains, Harpo is making life a little brighter for "Love Happy"'s leading lady Maggie (Vera-Ellen). Blu-ray Release date: May 6th, 2014

Overlord BD - Seamlessly interweaving archival war footage and a fictional narrative, Stuart Cooper’s immersive account of one twenty-year-old’s journey from basic training to the front lines of D-day brings all the terrors and isolation of war to life with jolting authenticity. Overlord, impressionistically shot by Stanley Kubrick’s longtime cinematographer John Alcott, is both a document of World War II and a dreamlike meditation on man’s smallness in a large, incomprehensible machine. Blu-ray Release date: May 13th, 2014

A Farewell to Arms BD - Farewell to Arms is the second film version of Ernest Hemingway's World War One novel--and also the last film produced by David O. Selznick (Gone with the Wind). Rock Hudson plays an American serving in the Italian Army during the "War to End All Wars". Jennifer Jones is his lover, a Red cross nurse. They have a torrid affair, which results in Jones' pregnancy. As the months pass, Hudson and Jones lose contact with one another, and Jones believes that Hudson has forgotten her. Blu-ray Release date: October 14th, 2013

Truth - A chance internet encounter brings the cute, affable Caleb (Sean Paul Lockhart, in a star-making performance) and the hunky, older Jeremy (writer-director Rob Moretti) together. Jeremy seduces the vulnerable young man with compliments, attention and the promise of a secure relationship. But beneath Caleb's shy smile and innocent eyes lies a troubled young man. Trust is violated, tempers rise and the destructive side of love takes over in this riveting, edge-of-your-seat thriller. DVD Release Date: May 6th, 2014

The Real Decameron - Hot on the trails of Pasolini’s Decameron, the sleaze meisters of Italo-sexploitation unleashed a flood of similarly themed erotic sex comedies that held the Italian box-office hostage with its titillating crude politically incorrect jokes and the breathtaking raunchy beauty of its prima-donnas. The Real Decameron stars Rosalba Neri of Slaughter Hotel fame, Christa Linder (Jack Hill’s Alien Terror) and Orchidea De Santis (Rino Di Silvestro’s Red Light Girls) and is a must see for devout fans of euro sexploitation. Also known as The Sexbury Tales, this naughty gem is a romper stomper of a steaming comedy! DVD Release date: May 6th, 2014

The People vs. Paul Crump - Before going on to direct sophisticated genre films like The French Connection, The Exorcist, and Killer Joe, William Friedkin made one of the most powerful documentaries you ve never seen. On March 20, 1953, five black men robbed a meatpacking plant in Chicago s Union Stock Yards of $20,000. Their getaway went awry, and a security guard was shot and killed. Within a week, all five men were arrested. Four received jail sentences and were eventually paroled. The fifth, Paul Crump, then 22, confessed under questionable interrogation tactics, then retracted, only to be convicted and sentenced to the electric chair. DVD Release Date: May 27th, 2014
