ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Brief comments this week - I always get a kick out of Harry Kumel's Daughters of Darkness - it's another ripe-for-purchase Blue Underground Blu-ray. Tony Scott's Unstoppable was a fun ride with Denzel and Chris Pine and the documentary Waiting For Superman was very worthwhile. Unfortunately, the Italian Blu-ray of Fritz Lang's You Only Live Once is flawed - as is Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre although many may be able to live with the weaknesses. Gregory covers an essential Noir on DVD, 99 River Street, from director Phil Karlson and Eric covers a South Korean horror; The Uninvited. There is also an arty, Estonian film, The Temptation of St. Tony, evoking Tarkovsky - for those keen to investigate..

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Daughters of Darkness BD - In The Shining (1980) Stanley Kubrick makes a small visual homage to Last Year at Marienbad, (1961) when he references the garden maze that Jack is about to go into in search of his son. It's fitting that Kubrick should be thinking of  Last Year at Marienbad, since that classic film by Alain Resnais deals with ghostly memories trapped in a large, luxury hotel. Belgian director Harry Kumel actually does Kubrick's homage one better in his acclaimed art-house, lesbian-vampire film Daughters of Darkness (1971) - he actually got Marienbad's lead, Delphine Seyrig, to once again play a major role that competes for attention with an enigmatic and cavernous hotel. It's a heck of a battle because Seyrig puts on a mesmerizing show that has often been compared to an over-the-top Marlene Dietrich impersonation, and the imposing hotel locations include the Grand Hotel des Thermes in Ostend and the Hotel Astoria in Brussels. Blu-ray Release Date: March 1st, 2011

You Only Live Once BD - Henry Fonda and Sylvia Sidney play ill-fated lovers in Fritz Lang's fatalistic psychological thriller, You Only Live Once. The film opens as Joan (Sidney), a secretary in the public defender's office, excitedly awaits the release of her thrice-convicted criminal lover Eddie (Fonda). The two try to build a life together, despite the scepticism of Joan's sister and boss, and succeed for a while until destiny seems to take control. Eddie butts up against a society that refuses to give ex-cons a second chance and tumbles back into contact with old gang connections. When he winds up back in jail--this time with a death sentence--he once again escapes only to commit a murder in the process and take Joan and their new baby with him as he wildly flees. The images are stark, as Lang darkly portrays the doomed couple's headlong descent through a cold society and the inescapable forces of fate. The suspense runs high and the cinematography is sweeping as the camera follows the couple from their ramshackle honeymoon to their desperate getaway and ultimately to their tragically climactic demise. Blu-ray Release Date: February 2nd, 2011

Waiting For Superman BD - Every morning, in big cities, suburbs and small towns across America, parents send their children off to school with... the highest of hopes. But a shocking number of students in the United States attend schools where they have virtually no chance of learning--failure factories likelier to produce drop-outs than college graduates. And despite decades of well-intended reforms and huge sums of money spent on the problem, our public schools haven't improved markedly since the 1970s. Why? There is an answer. And it's not what you think. Blu-ray Release date: February 15th, 2011

Unstoppable BD - A massive unmanned locomotive, nicknamed "The Beast" and loaded with toxic cargo, roars through the countryside, vaporizing... anything put in front of it. A veteran engineer and a young conductor, aboard another train in the runaway's path, devise an incredible plan to try and stop it -- and prevent certain disaster in a heavily populated area. Blu-ray Release date: February 15th, 2011

The Temptation of St. Tony - “The Temptation of St. Tony” is a film about a man, who has reached middle age, and finds himself in exactly the kind of darkening forest that Dante describes. An unusual problem intrudes upon his moderately prosperous and quiet life - morality. Is it possible to be a “good person”? What does that mean anyway? And what’s in it for you? On his journey towards a clearer conscience but an increasingly complicated reality, Tony meets several typical specimens familiar from contemporary Estonian society and lives through exciting adventures, not without some diverting humour. And it starts to seem that slowly, and quite inevitably, the man loses his job, his family, and finally reality, itself. Compassion incurs capital loss. DVD Release Date: February 22nd, 2011

Santa Sangre BD - Like some Fellini-esque nightmare, this heady mix of circus freaks (a tattooed lady, an exotic midget, sad-faced clowns) and weird religious and hallucinatory imagery (an armless virgin saint, writhing snakes, zombie brides) is pregnant with disturbing psychological undercurrents. Traumatised at an early age by a violent argument between his knife-throwing father (Stockwell) and trapeze-artist mother (Guerra), former child magician Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky), now 20, escapes from an asylum into the outside world. Reunited with his jealous mother, Fenix becomes her 'arms' in a bizarre pantomime act, a role which spills dangerously over into real life... Blu-ray Release Date: January 25th, 2011

99 River Street - A down-on-his-luck boxer, who is reduced to driving a cab, offers to help a would-be actress who is accused of murdering a stage producer...but finds that he must clear his name as well when his wife's lifeless body turns up in the back of his cab. Based on a story by George Zuckerman. DVD Release Date: January 18th, 2011

The Uninvited - Interior designer Jung-won (Park Shin-yang, WHITE VALENTINE) falls asleep on the train home, but wakes up at the last stop. He is not alone on the train. There are unattended two children in the seats beside and opposite him. He learns the next morning that the children were found dead on the train. Soon the child specters start showing up at his kitchen table. His fiancee Hee-eun (Seon Yu, the Korean adaptation of BLACK HOUSE) is impatient about his growing listlessness. His pastor father is concerned about Jung-won's nightmares, but has enough to worry about keeping his church from falling apart. His sister has arranged for Jung-won to take some parishioners home. DVD Release Date: October 5th. 2009
