  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Nightcrawler BD - pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story. Blu-ray Release date: February 10th, 2015

Deliverance (Digibook added) BD - Adapted from James Dickey's popular novel, John Boorman's 1972 movie recounts the grueling psychological and physical journey taken by four city slickers down a river in the backwoods of Georgia. At the behest of Iron John-esque Lewis (Burt Reynolds), the less adventuresome Ed (Jon Voight), Bobby (Ned Beatty), and Drew (Ronny Cox) agree to canoe down an uncharted section of the river before a dam project ruins the region. After warnings from the grimy, impoverished locals, and Drew's tuneful yet ominous "Dueling Banjos" encounter with a mute inbred boy, the four men embark on their trip, exulting in the beauty of nature and the initial thrill of the rapids. The next day, however, things begin to take a turn for the worse when Bobby and Ed decide to rest on shore after becoming separated from Lewis and Drew. Two rifle-wielding mountain men (Bill McKinney and Herbert "Cowboy" Coward) emerge from the woods, tying up Ed while one of them rapes Bobby and makes him "squeal like a pig." Lewis and Drew rescue them, but the attack irrevocably changes the tenor of the journey. As the river gets rougher and rougher, the men come to nightmarish grips with what it means to survive outside the safety net of "civilization." Blu-ray Release Date: July 2nd, 2013

World For Ransom BD - World for Ransom is an unofficial extension of the popular 1950s TV series China Smith. Most of the Smith personnel, including star Dan Duryea, director Robert Aldrich and cinematographer Joseph Biroc, are on hand for this inexpensive but well-mounted melodrama. Duryea plays a mercenary adventurer who gets mixed up in a scheme by foreign spies (who wear baggy suits and speak with Slavic accents) to kidnap a nuclear scientist. Actually it isn't the whole world that's held for ransom--only the city of Singapore, which the spies threaten with nuclear annihilation. World for Ransom star Dan Duryea is solidly supported by old pros Gene Lockhart, Patric Knowles, Reginald Denny and Nigel Bruce. Blu-ray Release date: January 20th, 2015

A Gorgeous Girl Like Me BD - A sociologist researching a book interviews murderess Camille, who tells him the story of her life. Put in a reform school as a child for suspected patricide, and later transferred to an orphanage, she escaped and tricked a young man called Clovis into marrying her. After attempting to kill Clovis' mother, she fled to Paris, where she began an affair with a night-club singer. Camille has left a trail of destruction and deceit in her wake, which now threatens to engulf the sociologist. Blu-ray Release Date: September 15th, 2014

Diner BD - Fries with gravy, a cherry cola. Friendship, bragging rights...and does Sinatra or Mathis croon the best makeout music? Before there was the counterculture of the '60s, there was the counter culture. From his Oscar-nominated script, Barry Levinson makes his directing debut with this endearing study of pals in transition. Film-debuting Ellen Barkin plays a neglected wife. Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon, Timothy Daly and Paul Reiser - chosen from over 600 hopefuls - play the up-all-night buddies who work out the remnants of adolescence during ritual grazings at a busy steel-and-vinyl hangout in 1959 Baltimore. Stars, laughs, interlocking stories: entertainment is the daily special in Diner. Blu-ray Release date: February 3rd, 2015

Track the Man Down BD - After the robbery of a dog-racing track goes awry, a hoodlum (George Rose) scrambles to evade the police and a gang of criminals, while maintaining control of a satchel of stolen funds. The loot falls into the hands of his girlfriend (Ursula Howells), then her sister (Petula Clark), who carries it on a long bus trip. Along the way, her path converges with that of an aging actress (Renee Houston), a snitch (Kenneth Griffith), and a story-hungry reporter (Kent Taylor). They end up confined in a deserted boathouse, where the fate of the money and the people pursuing it are resolved. Blu-ray Release date: January 20th, 2015

Every Man For Himself BD - After a decade in the wilds of avant-garde and early video experimentation, Jean-Luc Godard returned to commercial cinema with this star-driven work of social commentary, while remaining defiantly intellectual and formally cutting-edge. Every Man for Himself, featuring a script by Jean-Claude Carrière and Anne-Marie Miéville, looks at the sexual and professional lives of three people—a television director (Jacques Dutronc), his ex-girlfriend (Nathalie Baye), and a prostitute (Isabelle Huppert)—to create a meditative story about work, relationships, and the notion of freedom. Made twenty years into his career, it was, Godard said, his “second first film.” Blu-ray Release Date: February 3rd, 2015

The Weapon BD - When a young boy (Jon Whiteley) accidentally shoots a playmate with a pistol found in the rubble of a bombed-out building, he runs away from home and wanders the streets of postwar England. Ballistic analysis connects the weapon to the unsolved murder of a military officer ten years earlier. A gruff American captain, Mark Andrews (Steve Cochran), attempts to track down the missing gun, while trying to appease the boy’s anxious mother (Lizabeth Scott). The search for the missing boy (and the weapon he’s carrying) leads Andrews into the seedy London underworld, where a series of unsavory characters attempt to divert him from his quest. As depicted by director Val Guest the decayed urban setting resembles the Vienna of Carol Reed’s The Third Man, permeated by grime and shadow, and shot through with an oppressive sense of despair. Blu-ray Release date: January 20th, 2015

Woman They Almost Lynched BD - All suspense in The Woman They Almost Lynched would seem to be dissipated by title, but director Allan Dwan holds the viewers spellbound throughout. Part of the tension arises from fact that there are two leading female characters: Kate Quantrill (Audrey Totter), wife of infamous Confederate raider Quantrill (Brian Donlevy), and Sally Maris (Joan Leslie), virginal sister of Kate's ex-lover, saloonkeeper Bitteroot Bill (Reed Hadley). Sally herself falls in love with Lance Horton (John Lund), ostensibly a mine foreman but actually a Southern spy. Rest assured that one of the two ladies is going to wind up with a noose around her neck for keeping "bad" company -- and that the other will somehow come to the rescue. Blu-ray Release date: January 20th, 2015

A Day in the Country BD - Based on Guy de Maupassant's story of the same name "Une partie de campagne" is an unfinished film by Jean Renoir that has beautiful, romantic imagery of a contemplative nature and is based on the human conditions of love, emotion and frailty. The film was initially to be included as a two-part feature film, but the funding was never obtained for the second half. What we have left is a beautiful film unmarred by the economics of cinema and often stated as Renoir's best-loved of his films. On a country picnic a young girl leaves her family and fiancé for a while and succumbs to a brief romance. Renoir's sensuous tribute to the countryside - and to the river - has seldom been surpassed. Blu-ray Release Date: February 10th, 2015

Tiger Shark - A minor but highly enjoyable Hawks adventure, with Robinson in expansive form as the Portuguese tuna fisherman who marries a friend's daughter, only to find that she has lost her heart to his younger buddy. Warners revamped the love-triangle story countless times, and Hawks himself reworked it for Barbary Coast; but the film's virtues lie less in its plot (which, with its protagonist mutilated by a shark, occasionally drifts rather waywardly into Moby Dick territory) than in its jaunty mood and in the evocative tuna-fishing sequences, shot on location on the Monterey coast. DVD Release Date: February 24th, 2010

Spring in a Small Town - Regarded as the finest work from the first great era of Chinese filmmaking, Fei Mu's quiet, piercingly poignant study of adulterous desire and guilt-ridden despair is a remarkable rediscovery, often compared to David Lean's Brief Encounter (1945). After eight years of marriage to Liyan -once rich but now a shadow of his former self following a long, ruinous war - Yuwen does little except deliver his daily medication. A surprise visit from Liyan's friend Zhang re-energises the household, but also stirs up dangerously suppressed longings and resentments. DVD Release Date: February 23rd, 2015
