ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): It was so wonderful to see Hitchcock's Rebecca via thick grain-drenched Blu-ray rendering this past week. Three Outlaw Samurai is a classic and Criterion have put out an amazing video transfer. Arrows Blu-ray of Schlöndorff's The Tin Drum offers new restorations of both the theatrical version and the brand new Director's Cut of the film. Watkins Punishment Park - now in a dual-format package from The Masters of Cinema seems more relevant than ever before. Synapse Blu-ray of Maniac Cop doesn't dynamically advance over Arrows. Happy, Happy is amusing but the 1080P package just doesn't cut the mustard. On DVD, I wouldn't say I am addicted to stuff like Roger Corman's Cult Classic's Lethal Ladies 2 Collection - but it's closer than ever before. Lot's of fun there. Lisandro Alonso's Liverpool from Second Run is a worthy spin for those who can appreciate minimalist cinema. I credit Criterion with exposing me to Eclipse Series 31: Three Popular Films by Jean-Pierre Gorin. Certainly recommended! Carol Reed's Outcast of the Islands looks amazing on the SD format but I wish I could say the same about Abe Lincoln in Illinois - a film very worthy of a stronger transfer. Eric covered The House on Sorority Row and I watched and reviewed the salaciously-titled The Platinum Pussycat. Ohh my. Have a great week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Rebecca BD - “Last night, I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” Rebecca’s haunting opening line conjures the entirety of Hitchcock’s romantic, suspenseful, elegant film. A young woman (Joan Fontaine) believes her every dream has come true when her whirlwind romance with the dashing Maxim de Winter culminates in marriage. But she soon realizes that Rebecca, the late first Mrs. de Winter, haunts both the temperamental, brooding Maxim and the de Winter mansion, Manderley. In order for Maxim and the new Mrs. de Winter to have a future, Rebecca’s spell must be broken and the mystery of her violent death unraveled. Blu-ray Release Date: January 24th, 2012

Three Outlaw Samurai BD - This first feature by the legendary Hideo Gosha is among the most beloved chanbara (sword-fighting) films. An origin-story offshoot of a Japanese television phenomenon of the same name, Three Outlaw Samurai is a classic in its own right. A wandering, seen-it-all ronin (Tetsuro Tamba) becomes entangled in the dangerous business of two other samurai (Isamu Nagato and Mikijiro Hira), hired to execute a band of peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of a corrupt magistrate. With remarkable storytelling economy and thrilling action scenes, this is an expertly mounted tale of revenge and loyalty. Blu-ray Release date: February 14th, 2012

Happy, Happy BD - Family is the most important thing in the world to Kaja. She is an eternal optimist in spite of living with a man who would rather go hunting with the boys, and who refuses to have sex with her because she "isn't particularly attractive" anymore. Whatever. That's Life. But when "the perfect couple" moves in next door, Kaja struggles to keep her emotions in check. These new neighbors open a new world to Kaja with consequences for everyone involved. And when Christmas comes around, it becomes evident that nothing will ever be like before even if Kaja tries her very best. Blu-ray Release date: January 24th, 2012

Roger Corman's Cult Classic's Lethal Ladies 2 Collection - Kidnapped by Roman soldiers, four beautiful women must battle for their lives in The Arena . . . while attempting to beat the Romans at their own game. Starring Pam Grier and Margaret Markov (The Hot Box and Black Mama, White Mama). Directed by Steve Carver (Big Bad Mama and Capone).
They’re fast. They’re beautiful. They’re deadly . . . they have to be. A fashion photography assignment teams three American models and inadvertently plunges them into the mystery and danger of international espionage in Cover Girl Models. When an invaluable roll of microfilm is sewed into one of the girls’ fashion gowns, they are drawn into the violence and intrigue of a spy-vs.-counterspy conspiracy. Starring Tara Strohmeier (The Great Texas Dynamite Chase), Pat Anderson (TNT Jackson), Lindsay Bloom (H.O.T.S.) and Vic Diaz.
In Fly Me, a group of martial arts assassins board a passenger plane. Once in the air, the group terrorizes the passengers and insists that the plane be rerouted to another destination. But they picked the wrong plane to hijack, as these stewardesses don’t just serve meals and beverages: their hands and feet are lethal weapons! Starring Pat Anderson (Cover Girl Models), Lenore Kasdorf (Missing In Action) and Vic Diaz. DVD Release Date: January 24th, 2012

Eclipse Series 31: Three Popular Films by Jean-Pierre Gorin - Jean-Pierre Gorin, widely known for his collaborations with Jean-Luc Godard in the Dziga Vertov Group (including Tout va bien), established his personal voice with this trio of fascinating, nontraditional documentaries. Made in Southern California after the filmmaker relocated there in the midseventies, Poto and Cabengo, Routine Pleasures, and My Crasy Life illuminate hidden corners of our culture. With these films, Gorin revealed himself as a major chronicler of American life at its most hauntingly enigmatic. DVD Release Date: January 17th, 2012

Liverpool - Lisandro Alonso is one of cinema's most acclaimed new generation of filmmakers. Liverpool follows an enigmatically homesick shipworker, taking leave of his ship in a wintry Tierra del Fuego, compelled to visit the family he hasn't seen in years. When he finally arrives, he discovers that he's been forgotten by his ailing mother and is a complete stranger to his daughter, Analia. Liverpool was heralded at both Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals in 2008, proclaimed "one of the best undistributed films" by both INDIEWire and Film Comment, and 'Best Film of 2008' by CinemaScope. DVD Release Date: January 23rd, 2012

The Tin Drum BD - When Oskar Matzerath (the extraordinary David Bennent, just twelve at the time) receives a tin drum for his third birthday, he vows to stop growing there and then and woe betide anyone who tries to take his beloved drum away from him, as he has a banshee shriek that can shatter glass. As a result, he retains a permanent child s-eye perspective on the rise of Nazism as experienced through petit-bourgeois life in his native Danzig, the free city claimed by both Germany and Poland whose invasion in 1939 helped kick-start World War II. With the help of Luis Buñuel s favourite screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, director Volker Schlöndorff turns Günter Grass' magical-realist masterpiece into a carnivalesque frenzy of bizarre, grotesque yet unnervingly compelling images as Oskar turns his increasingly jaded eye and caustic tongue on the insane follies of the adult world that he refuses to join. Blu-ray Release Date: January 30th, 2012

Outcast of the Islands - Trevor Howard was always good at portraying insufferable blowhards and irredeemable bastards, but he excels himself as Peter Willems in this adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s second novel, a tumultuous tale of a late-19th Century trader who escapes scandal and infamy in Singapore to take up equally disruptive residence on a small Malayan island ‘belonging’ to sea captain Lingard (Ralph Richardson). DVD Release Date: January 23rd, 2012

Abe Lincoln in Illinois - Among the most masterful matchups of actor and role in screen history is this stirring film of Robert E. Sherwood's beloved play taking a thoroughly human look at the early years of our 16th President, with all his frailties and strength of character. Best Actor Oscar nominee Raymond Massey (who originated the role on stage) wonderfully plays the future Great Emancipator in a chronicle of his backwoods childhood through his first romance with Ann Rutledge (Mary Howard) to his phenomenal rise to President Elect, besting the great orator Stephen Douglas (Gene Lockhart). Ruth Gordon also does memorable work as driven, ambitious Mary Todd Lincoln, whose vision of Abe's leadership destiny will not be denied by anyone - including her often reticent husband. There's also no denying the enduring emotional power of this simple, magnificent movie. DVD Release Date: March 23rd, 2009

Punishment Park BD - Both controversial and relentless in its depiction of suppression and brutality, Punishment Park was heavily attacked by the mainstream press and permitted only the barest of releases in 1971. However, like Haskell Wexler's Medium Cool (1969) and Robert Kramer's Ice (1969), Peter Watkins' film has established itself as one of the key, yet rarely seen, radical films of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Giving voice to the disaffected youth of America that had lived through the campus riots at Berkeley, the trial of the Chicago Seven and who were witnessing the escalation of the Vietnam War, Punishment Park was named by Rolling Stone as one of their top ten films of 1971 and has earned many admirers in the four decades since its release. Blu-ray Release Date: January 23rd, 2012

Maniac Cop BD - Notorious video nasty creator William Lustig and B-Movie legend Larry Cohen return to the dirty streets for a unique high speed collision of the slasher movie and police thriller in Maniac Cop, a blood splattered tale of brutal cop vengeance from beyond the grave. When reports come in of a man in a police uniform committing gore drenched bloody murder on the city streets, officer Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell) stands accused. Now, with few friends, powerful enemies and a psychopathic slayer still at large, it s up to Jack to prove he s not guilty and bring down the killer. Synapse Blu-ray Release date: October 11th, 2011

The House on Sorority Row - Seven sisters of the Theta Pi sorority are graduating and they want to throw one last bash to remember; however, housemother Mrs. Slater (Lois Kelso Hunt) always closes up the house on the same day every year, and she does not want the girls staying on. When Mrs. Slater catches alpha female Vicki (Eileen Davidson, TV's THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS) with her boyfriend and slashes her mattress, Vicki decides that not only are they going to have their party, but the sisters are going to get even with her for four years of misery. Unfortunately, a real bullet finds its way among the blanks Vicki loaded into a gun she got to scare the old bat and now there's a body in the swimming pool. Good girl Katherine (Kate McNeil, MONKEY SHINES) wants to call the police, but Vicki convinces her and the other girls to hide the body and press on with the party. Mrs. Slater won't stay down, it seems, since her body disappears from the swimming pool and someone begins stalking the girls with the aged housemother's lethal walking stick. DVD Release Date: January 24th, 2012

The Platinum Pussycat - Betrayed, beaten and on the run from the mob! Framed for the brutal murder of her boyfriend, Dena (the gorgeous Sandy Roberts) goes on the lam to locate the killers and avenge his death. Enlisting the help of her former lover, a hard-boiled ex-cop, the duo outwits danger, degradation and the mob in an adventure that s as thrilling as it is bizarre. Part sexploitation film, part action-thriller, Platinum Pussycat serves up a dizzying dish of guns, gangsters, frogmen, car chases and naked flesh in a combination of b&w and color inserts that result in an absurdly satisfying piece of psychotronic cinema!
