DVD Review: High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story HERE

After pestering Gary, owner of DVDBeaver, he has reluctantly allowed me to review some poker DVDs on his wonderful website. I appreciate the formatting he has done of the cryptic text and screen captures that I have sent him (especially those pop-up screen samples!).  What fascinates me about this are the sociological and cultural manifestations that this explosive craze has created. A whole community has arose - in many cases the success of many of these young stars is due to their immature disregard and disrespect for the huge sums of money they are playing for. This is not a slight - there are some mathematically smart chaps, but one of the attributes of this lifestyle appears to be the ability to gamble, at times looking quite reckless with inordinate sums of cash. Celebrity fascination is another interesting new factor to this monstrously popular pastime.

Although I have been a poker player for 20 years I never cease to learn about the game - as well as its unique characters - viewing these interesting DVDs is more education. Some friends have asked me before why I waste my time watching poker DVDs. By observing the situations, and being allowed to see the cards that are normally hidden, has not only made me a far better player, but given me a keener understanding of the skill involved. It certainly has the ability to level the playing field until you understands it further. It's decision-making in the extreme. Another huge appeal is in the factor of luck that is a part of the game - it expand the myth that anyone a winner - although the purpose of these DVDs is to instill that it can be possible. The remuneration involved is astounding - often more than The Masters, The Kentucky Derby and Wimbledon prize monies combined.

We will continue to review more as they become available so stay tuned, there are more poker DVDs coming out every month! If you have recommendations please let me know (click on my name in blue below).

NOTE: When these tournaments are actually played (in real time) they take much longer to conclude. All these DVDs have condensed the play by excluding the less exciting (often mundane) robotic elements of the poker ballet. People who view this should not get the idea that attrition is not a key factor in the ability to find success. 'Patience' is poker's 'prime directive' and an essential element that constitutes every strong player.

Description

The first season of Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament, which aired for 12 consecutive weeks. An invitational tournament follows game after game of the same 8 players (regarded as the best in the world) each week playing for positioning in the 13th week finale.

Comments:

I started with this review as it is my #1 favorite of all the poker DVDs I own. The absolute proven best players from the history of the game; names like Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese, Johnny Chan etc. playing in 7 mini-tournaments against each other building to an incredible finale. I've re-watched this about 5 times. The play of Danish, and sometimes noted world backgammon player, Gus Hansen is without question the most amazing poker I have ever seen anyone play... ever. His instincts are uncanny - he reads each unique player based on their bets and the intricacies of the situation and it seems he's never wrong.

<SPOILER> Hansen doesn't just beat the best players of the game, he destroys them single handedly removing each one in turn from the final table. It was unbelievable! </SPOILER>

The commentating was very well done - the clear visuals display relevant statistics - most importantly the positioning (dealer and blinds) and chip total amounts of each player. I'm not as diligent as Gary about DVD quality, but I do know these were all dual layered discs and looked fine on my system (tube). This is very professionally done with adept camerawork and excellent detail. I strongly recommend this to poker fans everywhere!

Comments:

This is great value for the money and the players are all world-class. Expert player commentaries are optional on many segments. Sexton and Van Patten's commentary is quite good and it is quite refreshing to see a new environment in each segment including Paris, Vegas, Mexico, and the Caribbean. These WPT DVDs are being recognized as the premium class of the current productions. The extras on this, like on most are kind of fluffy, but some may get something out of the player profiles and poker corners although they are simply repeats of the ones shown during each segment.

Comments:

Less professionally done than the WPT DVDs its still has some good value. One of my complaints is that you are hardly ever shown player chip totals which, as many poker aficionados are aware, is paramount to betting and action. It is as important as the number of players at each session. You can't, or really shouldn't, make judgments solely on the basis of the cards - you won't learn anywhere near as much as you could.

The players are much less talented than what you may be used to in other DVDs - which is a good thing to see an inferior caliber now and again for comparison. This is another way to learn. It is kind of humorous and insightful to hear the 'poker expert' commentary for each episode make statements like 'Wow - that's new - I'd never do that...' in regards to some of the plays that are made. It is educational to follow what the reported errors are. This is something that you wouldn't see in an all-pro game where the only missteps are slight judgment calls that are within the realm of the percentages. So from that perspective it again has value and the camera positioning and detail are pretty acceptable. Yes, I recommend this package.

Description

2003 World Series Of Poker-THE WORLD'S PREMIERE POKER EVENT. "Moneymaker makes his mark as every man's champion." In what will be long remembered as the most improbable win at the 34th annual World Series Of Poker, amateur Chris Moneymaker parlayed an online entry fee of $40.00 into the dream of a lifetime. A record 839 players were part of the incredible tournament in Las Vegas that saw today's best professional players pay an upfront entry fee of $10,000 for a chance to win a life's fortune. But in the end, the 27-year-old Moneymaker held a full house of fives over fours to beat the odds and walk away a multi-millionaire.

Comments:

This 2-disc DVD set contains all of ESPN Original Entertainment's telecast of the 2003 World Series Of Poker in a condensed form. This is the one that helped put No-limits Hold'em on the map thanks to Moneymaker's victory.

The selected scenes seems to highlight more of the flamboyant chance plays not the serious and calculated decisions and hence it is not as good a learning tool as it could be but I understand that is how much of the tournament went. Most unfortunately it is very tardy in showing both player totals and positions, relying more on the cards as the focus. In my opinion this is a bad choice. I was not happy with the commentary either which consistently left out player options, ie. what I mean by that is the the two announcers state the facts as they can see all the cards, not explaining why a player, who cannot see as they do, has made the decision that he/she has. They both seem to miss the flush options a lot as well. There was a bit of filler in between play but not excessive. This definitely has some value to poker fans as it gets a little inside the WSoP championship and the ending is quite exciting. Great for appreciating recent poker history and some of the quirky nuances of the game.

Desc. Las Vegas is the setting for wicked bluffs and nasty gutshot draws as five of poker’s most notorious personalities strut their stuff during championship play. Watch as three-time WPT winner Gus Hansen goes up against brash Antonio Esfandiari, smooth-as silk Paul "The Truth" Darden, hooded genius Phil Laak and the devil himself, David "Devilfish" Ulliott. Thrown into the group, like a lamb to the wolves, is Illinois bank teller Mark Richards who won his seat at the table during a WPT satellite tournament.

Comments:

This is an okay tournament although the 'Bad Boy' moniker is a cheap selling tool. A couple of the players use some contrived 'acting-up' and don't seem to be taking the play seriously, although I am sure that they were.

An amateur player, Mark Richards, plays against 5 professionals and once again Gus Hansen pulls off the most unexpected 'call' I've ever seen... and it works to his benefit, yet again. He continues to be the greatest enigma of the poker world.

Typical World Poker Tour quality with Sexton and Van Patten commentating and sexy Shana Hiatt introducing things. The camera shows important details - discards, totals, dealer and blinds. This also has a separate commentary track with Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak that is only amusing and far less educational than one might anticipate. With the conservative amateur player involved the poker has a bit of a positive edge and although only one 'match' is played you might want to consider picking it up although its $ value next to the 6 or 8 disc sets is comparatively minimal. I'm particularly keen on judging Hansen's play although its erratic nature is truly confounding - hence the interest.

Comments:

I'm afraid this only get a very moderate recommendation. It has a bit of a twist to some of the other tournaments in that a 30 second timer starts to for betting (in fact I believe you have 60 seconds but the timer appears on screen for the last 30 seconds and if you don't make a decision the lights go out and the table lights up... and you hand is folded. It only happened once, but I believe it did effect play as more folded as they couldn't calculate the odds fast enough.

I wasn't really as keen on this for one reason or another. No extras but the same high level WPT efficiency in showing imperative data. there was some excitement at the end, but again $ value is on the weak side with only one tourney at 1:30:00.

Comments:

These are the eight tournaments show on the DVD: Legends of Poker, Borgata Poker Open, Grand Prix de Paris, World Poker Finals, World Poker Open, LA Poker Classic, Bay 101 Shooting Star and WPT Championship... and they are by far the most exciting I have ever seen from the 100's I have witnessed. The 'World Poker Open' in Tunica and the 'World Poker Finals' were exhausting in their excitement levels. It was the most draining and highly interesting poker ever televised, both because of the ultra-aggressive play and the huge stakes (over 3 times the prize monies of Season 1 of only 2 years previously).

Now I see that there are some complaints that not all the tournaments from Season 3 are included in this package ( it IS called 'The Best of') - this is true and the 'Bay 101 Shooting Star' could have been a bad choice to add as it appears very hap-hazardly played especially by entrant Danny Nguyen. But the detractors will have no leg to stand on when it comes to his success and the money he won. The game has changed to such a high level of 'gambling' now that doesn't resemble the other 2 seasons. The only way to succeed is to make outlandish calls at times which 1) keeps your skilled opponents off-balance and 2) keeps you from being run over by in the other combatants wake of this same style. It used to be ideal to bet last, but now it has almost switched to whoever gets to say 'all-in' first generally wins the pot as the other plays bow down in the face of a potential table exit. Gus Hansen found so much success with this ultra aggressive style of play that many others are duplicating it, or even exceeding his excess. The entire game can't be judged on a single hand but rather each entry is an important cog in this new intentionally gear changing style. It can seem quite absurd from the rail but it obviously works although it does appear to rely more on the luck factor than skill.

Technically the DVD is the best yet. You can watch with or without some excluded hands (usually from the head-to-head showdowns) or you can watch those individually later. A superior 3-level split window allows views of the players and the hands simultaneously. All important information is available - discards, player totals, position etc. Sexton is excellent and Van Patten holds up the color end very well - I would easily say they have improved. Shana even looks a little older and her hair is longer - she is the perfect 'fluff' hostess.

I was extremely excited to see some legendary players that I had only read about previously (Ted Forrest, Chau Giang etc.) in the book Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King, The : Inside the Richest Poker Game of All Time
by Michael Craig. This was beyond a treat - I was mesmerized to see so many extreme power-poker amateurs having success against 20 year veterans.

Comments:

This is very decent value for the money - over 20 hours of the inaugural season of the World Poker Tour 5-discs with 3 X 1.5 hour tournaments finals on each. This is a lot of poker for anyone to watch.

The technical quality is only a notch below the stellar Season 2 set with more noticeable layer changes and although the same valuable poker-data information (discards, blinds totals etc.) - they are not as frequently displayed. Sexton and Van Patten appearing to be cutting their teeth in their new roles as commentators and it is all still very engaging but a little less polished.

We still recommend but a couple of the tournaments had some boring contests - Layne Flack vs. Jerry Buss was about the most mundane poker head-to-head I have seen. It was nice to have more opportunities to see Hansen run-over his competitors. This set is very good - but not great poker viewing.
