USA 2016
Young Ruth (GOSSIP GIRL's Sonya Harum) comes to town in search of answers about its most notorious crime, the brutal murder-suicide of Gale (GOTHAM's Maggie Geha) and Uriah Thomas (THE BLACKLIST's Lars Gerhard) a couple years before. Raised by the woman she thought to be her mother but was actually her grandmother, Ruth knows nothing about Gale apart from a handful of letters hidden away by her grandmother. The local sheriff (Gabe Wood) can only point her to two people who might know more than the official report: Uriah's sister Adele (BULL's Geneva Carr) and Miller (Tom McKay, KILL COMMAND), one of Uriah's farmhands with a talent for mechanical repair who now lives like a recluse in a derelict abattoir. With Adele not returning her phone calls, Ruth nudges her way into Miller's solitary existence in an effort to discover Uriah's motive for murdering her mother. As a familiar forbidden love story between drifter and battered wife unfolds in flashback, Ruth finds herself being seduced not by Miller but by some unquiet presence that lurks within the building. When Adele finally does get in touch with Ruth, the embittered woman offers a story that contradicts Miller's, leaving Ruth to ponder which story is true or the truth lies somewhere in between. What ultimately turns out to be an assuredly-directed and attractively-photographed but ho-hum thriller is elevated somewhat by the central performances of Harum and McKay. |

Breaking Glass' mid-range bitrate progressive, anamorphic encode does a serviceable job with this deliberately softish, warm-toned film which makes use of lens flare and backlighting to create a moody feel in both the drab present-day and more colorful flashback sequences. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track makes use of the surrounds for atmosphere, some rumbling thunder, and subtle music cues. English Closed Captioning is available. Extras include a cast/crew Q&A and two short films by the director. |
