"They say that gay men chose their own families. And that's never more evident than during the holidays," and the film SHARED ROOMS illustrates this thesis through a trio of interlocking stories of a series of existing relationships rocked by and adapting to change in between the Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, and the climactic "New Year's Steve Not Eve" party. No sooner do screenwriter Laslo (Christopher Grant Pearson) and hubby Cal (Alec Manley Wilson) bemoan their couple friends adopting or having children through surrogates and transitioning from "gay dates to play dates" than the duo wind up with their own bundle of joy when Cal's twinky nephew Zeke (Ryan Weldon) turns up on their doorstep after having been outed and disowned by his parents. Without family or friends after a bout in rehab, painter Sid (Justin Xavier) makes a tradition of trawling the Manhandler App for a holiday hookup but finds something deeper with Gray (Alexander Neil Miller). With his roommate Dylan (Robert Werner) away on business for two-third of the year, accountant Julian (Daniel Lipshutz) has been renting out Dylan's room on LGBTQBnB.com for easy hookups and hopes for Christmas conquest with hunky but evasive Frank (David Vaughn). When Dylan's trip is cancelled and he comes home early, he is forced to share a bed with Julian and confront his seemingly unrequited feelings for his roommate. A bit uneven in its deployment of sitcom-esque comic timing, SHARED ROOMS nevertheless has likable characters and satisfying resolutions in spite of plot contrivances (which do however tie in to one character's belief that things happen for a reason and perhaps his reluctance to totally abandon his faith while admitting that it is not always so accepting of gay people).

Comments

Given the brevity of the film, Wolfe Video's single-layer progressive, anamorphic widescreen encode is given an adequate bitrate and compression, with the HD videography looking crisp and colorful. The Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 stereo tracks are of comparable quality, with the surround mix having a bit more depth without really taking full advantage of the soundscape (understandable given the intimate nature of the film). Optional English SDH subtitles are included. Extras consist of a lively commentary by the director Rob Williams & actors Alec Manley Wilson, Justin Xavier, Robert Werner, and Christopher Grant Pearson - in which they discuss the sex scenes, chemistry between the actors, and anecdotes about the shoot - and a short blooper reel.
