(aka "Boven is het stil" or "Oben ist es still")

directed by Nanouk Leopold
Netherlands/Germany 2013

Based on the novel by Gerbrand Bakker, IT'S ALL SO QUIET details the lonely existence of Helmer (Jeroen Willems, OCEAN'S TWELVE), a middle-aged farmer who dutifully yet resentfully looks after his invalid father (Henri Garcin, THE WOMAN NEXT DOOR) and generally shuns contact with the outside world, more so as family friends, neighbors, and regular tradesmen die, retire, or move on with their lives while he is trapped in an emotional stasis. When he hires a young farmhand (Martijn Lakemeier, WINTER IN WARTIME), long suppressed desires come to the fore, but Helmer has long lived in the shadow of his dead brother and internalized his father's apparent hatred and the belief that the wrong brother survived. Helmer is waiting for his father to die, but it seems uncertain as to what sort of freedom he might achieve or whether he will have anything more to live for when that happens. The film is dedicated in memory of Willems who died in 2012.

Comments

Big World Pictures' single-layer disc provides a respectable if not spectacular progressive, anamorphic encode of this film in which close-ups sport appropriately rugged textures while the long shots of the muddy, overcast settings may be a bit softish by design. The default track is a Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo mix but a 5.1 track is available from the special features menu. Both mixes are rather sedate with a little more atmosphere in the surround track. English subtitles are burned into the image in a small, unobtrusive font. Extras consist of a trailer for the film and two other releases.
