Description: Ferris (Broderick) is a boy who gets anything he wants, screws over anyone who gets in his way, and gets patted on the back for doing so. Gathering his best friend (Ruck) and his best girlfriend (Sara), he skips school for the day out in Chicago. Hughes revels in Ferris' ingenuity, then neatly adds dimension after a ninety-minute parade of hubris and material wealth by telling us that people count more than their possessions. Ferris is an admittedly entertaining, at times delightful fellow. How unfortunate that no one got to wring the little bastard's neck. Excerpt from TimeOut located HERE
The Film: This is John Hughes' best teen film, and it's a call to arms to everyone in the world who doesn't want to follow society's lame-ass rules at the expense of living a cool life. Mathew Broderick is Ferris Bueller and he knows how the world works. He knows how far to push his parents' ignorance, he knows how to get his girlfriend excused from school, and he knows if he doesn't give his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) a day in the sun, he'll probably burst out into the sort of teen violence best kept closeted over in "Heathers". Of course, this wouldn't be an '80s teen movie if there wasn't an expensive car to parade around town in and to destroy in the fatal final moments. Usually the car of choice was a simple Porsche, but these are especially well-to-do kids, so we get a 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. No one can say Ferris and his crew don't know how to fill up a day of skipped school. Excerpt from Brad Laidman at Film Threat located HERE
The first 10 minutes or so of Ferris Bueller's Day Off on Blu-ray look quite thick with heavy blacks levels that lean to appearing dense. It eventually settles down looking acceptable for a film approaching it's 1/4 century birthday. It could be the preponderance of grain but it does look a shade dirty at times (multiple speckles and marks too) and while colors seem true they rarely leap off the screen as one might expect from more modern films to hi-def. The gritty look is more a testament to the film's production age and it seems to work reasonably effectively in a viewing presentation. Personally, I'd much prefer this to an overly glossy look. Detail has some moments that exhibit a bit of depth but overall would be considered somewhat flat for 1080P. Daylight scenes are more impressive and his Blu-ray has a nice realistic feel and it advances beyond the last DVD editions in several key areas that signify the dual-layered transfer (at almost 40 Mbps) has been adeptly rendered.

Audio :TrueHD 5.1 track at 3158 kbps does its job well - if not always as intense as some have come to expect from lossless HD audio. This is a fairly light comedy and while effects sounds certainly exist - they aren't paramount to the film's effectiveness. Most notably the music sequences, from "Beat City" to Wayne Newton's anthem; "Danke Schoen", seem to belt out of the speakers with clarity and some range. The Ferrari's growling engine has some definite bass 'ummmphh'. The mix is actually better than I was anticipating - there are some buoyant surprises. There are optional subtitles and my Momitsu tells me this is Region FREE!
Extras :I don't know that this is any new material beyond the last DVD - although I suspect some is - despite nothing being in HD. No commentary but we get new and old interviews in such featurettes as Getting the Class Together; The Cast of 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', The Making of 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and Who is Ferris Bueller?. In total there is over an hour's worth and I think it's put together well - although I always question the implied importance of the film through the various sound bytes (It's just a Hughes teen comedy folks!) - despite some being fairly frank. I was more interested in people like Broderick talking about his career decisions at the time of 'Ferris'.
BOTTOM LINE: Gary Tooze May 1st, 2009 Coming out in an 35th Anniversary

Although I never wanted to become one of those guys who focused 'too much' on image and sound quality - I find HD is swiftly pushing me in that direction.
