ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): This week, I quite enjoyed the bio-pic Love & Mercy about Brian Wilson. I thought was an excellent film and strong Blu-ray package. It's reassuring that BFI's Blu-ray of Kurosawa's Rashomon is worthy of the masterpiece film. Ditto for Arrow's Blu-ray of John Boorman's Zardoz and Criterion's Second Printing Blu-ray of Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill. The production of Aleksey German's Hard to Be a God is quite the story in itself and it's move to Blu-ray is an ideal way for fans to see the massive film. Eureka does Hammer on Blu-ray and The Man Who Could Cheat Death produces a pleasing viewing. Speaking of the occult - I've always been a fan of Michael Winner's The Sentinel - one of the more creepy religious-based horrors of the 70's - and now available on Blu-ray. I can't say as much for 1978's horror The Legacy with Katherine Ross and Sam Elliot but there are a few positives tucked away in the story and you can now see it on Blu-ray. I'm not as critical as some on Umberto Lenzi's Spasmo - a more passive Giallo that looks great on Blu-ray from 88 Films. John Dahl's Unforgettable with Linda Fiorentino doesn't live up the pair's previous effort, The Last Seduction, but if you can suspend your disbelief the Kino Lorber Blu-ray may entertain. For those just getting into 007 - the new The Ultimate James Bond Collection on Blu-ray certainly offers a lot of value. On DVD Eric covered the highly regarded TV comedies An Actor's Life for Me and Hugh and I - Seasons 1 + 2....... "Cinema is the ultimate pervert art. It doesn't give you what you desire - it tells you how to desire.". - Slavoj Zizek.   Enjoy your week!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2015

Love & Mercy BD - Bill Pohlad's Love & Mercy, a biopic of Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson, focuses on two distinct periods in the songwriter's life. One timeline follows Wilson (played as a younger man by Paul Dano) as he quits performing live in order to focus on the creation of the album Pet Sounds, the single "Good Vibrations,"" and the eventually discarded album Smile. During this period of intense work, Wilson's mental-health issues grow worse. The other section of the film features John Cusack as an older Wilson, as he attempts to escape the influence of a manipulative doctor (Paul Giamatti) who has become a totalitarian guru to him. Helping him in this endeavor is a car saleswoman named Melinda (Elizabeth Banks). Love & Mercy screened at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2015

The Sentinel BD - When New York fashion model (Cristina Raines) splits with her fiancé (Chris Sarandon) and moves into an old brownstone, she soon discovers she has more than she bargained for in the lease. As luck would have it, a mysterious blind priest (John Carradine) who lives upstairs happens to be guarding the doorway to Hell, and she has been chosen as his replacement. Incidentally, when the door is finally opened, out spills an assortment of deformed humans whom director Michael Winner hand-picked from hospital wards and circus sideshows. Blu-ray Release date: September 22nd, 2015

Rashomon BD - A riveting psychological thriller that investigates the nature of truth and the meaning of justice, Rashomon is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. Four people give different accounts of a man’s murder and the rape of his wife, which director Akira Kurosawa presents with striking imagery and an ingenious use of flashbacks. This eloquent masterwork and international sensation revolutionized film language and introduced Japanese cinema—and a commanding new star by the name of Toshiro Mifune—to the Western world. BFI Blu-ray Release date: September 21st, 2015

Hard to Be a God BD - A group of scientists visits the distant planet Arkanar, and discovers a society still trapped in its own medieval era. Unable to interfere with the course of its history, they can only watch in mounting horror as all sparks of intelligent and independent thought are mercilessly snuffed out by Arkanar s cruel rulers. Will they remain enmired in their squalid existence for ever, or can the visitors subtly nudge the more open-minded in the right direction? Truly, it s hard to be a god. Blu-ray Release date: September 14th, 2015

The Man Who Could Cheat Death BD - Doctor and amateur sculptor Georges Bonnet (Anton Diffring Circus of Horrors, Fahrenheit 451) has discovered a murderous method of maintaining his youth, once every ten years he murders a young woman and removes her parathyroid glands to replace his own. But after 104 years, he's run into some problems. His collaborator is now too old to perform the surgical procedure, and a detective is on his case. In desperation Bonnet blackmails another surgeon (Christopher Lee) into performing the procedure by threatening the life of Janine Dubois (Hazel Court), a woman who both men desire. Eureka Blu-ray Release date: September 21st, 2015

Unforgettable BD - What is it like to enter into the mind of a sadistic killer, experiencing his every thought... and the thoughts of his victims during their last, terror-stricken moments? From John Dahl, the acclaimed director of Red Rock West comes this fast-paced, stylish thriller that propels you into a hallucinatory realm of heart-stopping suspense that never lets up. Accused of murdering his wife years ago in a blind, alcoholic rage, David Krane (Ray Liotta, Goodfellas) is desperate to clear his name and discover the identity of the real killer. Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2015

Zardoz BD - Writer-director John Boorman’s fabulously bizarre Zardoz (1974) is a visually stunning science fiction/fantasy fable starring Sean Connery as the spanner in the works of a dreamily languid future society. A primitive Adam, Connery’s Zed charges like a bull through the china shop of a civilization from which all signs of lusty humanity have been drained. Co-starring the fascinating Charlotte Rampling, and featuring spectacular production design by Anthony Pratt and stunning cinematography by Geoffrey Unsworth. Arrow Blu-ray Release date: September 14th, 2015

Dressed to Kill BD - The newer, 'second printing' Criterion has removed the fatal image issue and it looks more in-line with a preferred ratio. It's remains a wonderful package with the supplement additions. Certainly one fans can, now, feel confident in owning. Blu-ray Release date: September 8th, 2015

The Legacy BD - Americans Ross and Elliott, arrive in England and end up staying at a country mansion when their car is forced off the road. After the other guests at the house (Gray, Neil, Daltrey, Montague, and Broome) begin dying in strange ways, the new couple eventually discovers that the victims were members of a Satanic cult and had sold their souls to the Devil. Bedridden millionaire Standing is the leader of the cult and the man who is collecting the debts. It seems, moreover, that Ross is the reincarnation of Standing's mother and predestined to take over the sect upon his death. Blu-ray Release date: September 15th, 2015

An Actor's Life for Me - An Actor's Life For Me is based around Robert Wilson/Neilson, an actor who believes is about to make it big time. While he never achieves his quest for fame, he always remains optimistic that he will do at the next audition. His girlfriend, Sue Bishop, and agent Desmond Shaw do their best to keep his feet on the ground. DVD Release Date: September 7th, 2015

Hugh and I - Seasons 1 + 2 - Terry Scott is a youngish bachelor who wants to achieve wealth without putting in any hard work. The scheming Terry lives with his mother at 33, Lobelia Avenue in Tooting, London. They have a simple and easily led lodger, Hugh Lloyd, who works at a local aircraftfactory. The two often try and make money through one of Scott's schemes. Their next door neighbours, the Crispins and the Wormolds, also make frequent appearances. Mr Crispin is a loud mouth who thinks violence will solve a problem, Mrs Crispin is a snob and their daughter Norma is constantly chased after by men. On the other side, the Wormolds are an old couple with Harold being very doddery. In the last episode of the fifth series, Hugh won Ł5,000 on the Premium Bonds (the highest prize at the time) and the following series showed the two of them undertaking a world cruise. The neighbours and mother had left the show. DVD Release Date: September 7th, 2015
