ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): Fox's All About Eve Blu-ray gave me a fabulous presentation this week. I felt a whole new appreciation of Mankiewicz' film and I think it is my 'pick of the week'. McCarey's An Affair to Remember is not far behind in terms of impact but Criterion's Blu-ray package of Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Double Life of Veronique is also a magnificent addition to any digital library. Shakespeare in Love was a lot of fun to revisit on Blu-ray - one forgets what a great film it is. While I liked the movie Nowhere Boy about John Lennon's youth - the hi-def transfer leaves a lot to be desired. Moving to DVD - WUSA is an off-kilter film that works more in retrospect - still, very much worth a spin. The Power is an odd sci-fi entry from Byron Haskin and for the more 'hip' The Wild, Wild Planet is a stone cold groove, baby. Forman's tender and humorous A Blonde in Love is a great film to own on disc. Fans of prison movies may get something out of Riot from 69' with Hackman and hunky Jim Brown. I don't think I've ever seen a Jess Franco film I've, even remotely, liked but The Sinister Eyes of Dr. Orloff, covered by Eric, at least, has an intriguing title. Cannibal Girls sounds like a hoot with a couple of future Second City'ers. Enjoy!

  THIS WEEK's REVIEWS / COMPARISONS

An Affair to Remember BD - Handsome playboy Nicky Ferrante and beautiful night club singer Terry McKay have a romance while on a cruise from Europe to New York. Despite being engaged to other people, both agree to reunite at the top of the Empire State Building in six months. However, an unfortunate accident keeps Terry from the reunion, and Nicky fears that she has married or does not love him anymore. Will he discover the truth behind her absence and reunite with his one true love, or has fate and destiny passed them by? Blu-ray Release Date: February 1st, 2011

Soldier of Orange - Based on the true story of Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema (and his own novel), SOLDIER OF ORANGE is early big-budget Paul Verhoeven; indeed, it was the most expensive Dutch film at the time (with British location footage and stars). Although the plot is highly eventful and the tone is epic (Verhoeven also edited a four-hour version for Dutch television), it is not without elements of Verhoeven's trademark envelope-pushing sex and violence, but it also possesses several great Verhoeven moments (for instance, once-friends-now-enemies Erik and Alex's tense/humorous tango in the middle of a party). DVD Release Date: August 16th, 2010

Cannibal Girls - Newlyweds Clifford (Eugene Levy, AMERICAN PIE) and Gloria (Andrea Martin, BLACK CHRISTMAS and its remake) go way off the beaten path for a honeymoon in the snowy Canadian town of Farmhaven. The innkeeper Mrs. Wainwright (May Jarvis) tells them of the legend of the Cannibal Girls who lured men to their isolated farmhouse to kill and eat; then, of course, she recommends that they sample the local cuisine at a gourmet restaurant now residing in the same old farmhouse. DVD Release Date: February 14th, 2011

A Blonde in Love - With sixteen women to each man, the odds are against Andula in her desperate search for love—that is, until a rakish piano player visits her small factory town and temporarily eases her longings. A tender and humorous look at Andula’s journey, from the first pangs of romance to its inevitable disappointments, Loves of a Blonde(Lásky jedné plavovlásky) immediately became a classic of the Czech New Wave and earned Milos Forman the first of his Academy Award™ nominations. DVD Release Date: January 24th, 2011

All About Eve BD - Taking the reins of power from the great actress Margo Channing (Bette Davis), the cunning Eve (Anne Baxter) manoeuvres her way into Margo’s Broadway role, becomes a sensation and even causes turmoil in the lives of Margo’s director boyfriend, her playwright and his wife. Only the cynical drama critic (George Sanders) sees through Eve, admiring her audacity and perfect pattern of deceit. Marilyn Monroe co-stars in this acclaimed classic, which won six Academy Awards and received the most nominations (14) in film history. Blu-ray Release date: February 1st, 2011

The Wild, Wild Planet - It’s groovy to be a spaceman! The way-out ’60s meet the far-out 21st century in this psychedelic sci-fi head trip. Villains from überpowerful The Corporations think they’d found a way to defeat their rivals, the United Democracies: send robot minions to kidnap UD citizens, shrink them down to suitcase size and transport them to a planetoid for hideous human experiments. But a fearless rescue team is on the way! All that stands between the rescuers and success are four-armed androids in wraparound shades, martial artists wearing silk nighties and sporting sky-high hairdos, flying saucers swinging around the cosmos on strings like interplanetary yo-yos and more mod malevolence. It’s all wild, wild fun and fantasy, brothers and sisters! DVD Release Date: October 19th, 2010

The Double Life of Veronique BD - Krzysztof Kieslowski's international breakthrough remains one of his most beloved films, a ravishing, mysterious rumination on identity, love, and human intuition. Irène Jacob is incandescent as both Weronika, a Polish choir soprano, and her double, Véronique, a French music teacher. Though unknown to each other, the two women share an enigmatic, purely emotional bond, which Kieslowski details in gorgeous reflections, colors, and movements. Aided by Slawomir Idziak's shimmering cinematography and Zbigniew Preisner's haunting, operatic score, Kieslowski creates one of cinema's most purely metaphysical works. The Double Life of Veronique is an unforgettable symphony of feeling. Blu-ray Release Date: January 31st, 2011

The Power - Who has The Power? The Power to control minds, move objects, and murder by telekinesis? That’s what scientists at a space lab want to know when they realize they are targeted by one of their own – someone who possesses a superhuman power and a terrifying secret agenda. Producer George Pal brings the imagination and craft that turned his The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine into sci fi-classics to this eerie tale heightened by a suspenseful Miklos Rozsa score. The fine cast, led by George Hamilton and Suzanne Pleshette, includes two talents forever emblematic of paranoid post-war sci-fi/creature features: Michael Rennie (The Day the Earth Stood Still) and Richard Carlson (Creature from the Black Lagoon). DVD Release Date: September 14th, 2010

Shakespeare in Love BD - In this well-conceived Elizabethan comedy, writers Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman ask the question: Who was William Shakespeare's muse? The answer: Viola de Lesseps, a young noblewoman who dreams of acting on a man's stage. The screenwriters deliver a cleverly crafted scenario which beautifully illustrates both the early aspirations of the playwright, and a glimpse into the culture of Elizabethan theater. Colourful characters, like the Globe theater owner Henslow (played by Geoffrey Rush), the lead player in the troupe (Ben Affleck), and the Queen herself (Judi Dench), give the cast charm, wit, and feasibility. The young playwright who at the start of the film is experiencing writer's block bursts forth with a lyrical text inspired by the lovely and passionate Viola. Ultimately this film is about the making of a great play, but most importantly it is about the power of words. Blu-ray Release date: December 2nd, 2010

Riot - While the warden (real-life warden Frank A. Eyman) of a state prison is away, the isolation block erupts and 35 of the most violent criminals (led by Gene Hackman) stage a riot and take over their portion of the prison. Cully Briston (Jim Brown), in for five years and awaiting his eventual parole, wants no part of the riot. He impulsively gets involved, defending a prison guard and protecting him from the maniacs in the block. This tense drama is based on a Frank Elli’s novel, which chronicled an actual riot that took place in a Minnesota prison. A prison break is planned as knives slash, fists fly and blood is spilled. Directed by Buzz Kulik (Brian’s Song). DVD Release Date: February 8th, 2011

Nowhere Boy BD - John Lennon's childhood. Liverpool 1955: a smart and troubled 15-year-old is hungry for experience. In a family full... of secrets, two incredible women clash over John: Mimi, the buttoned-up aunt who raised him, and Julia, the prodigal mother. Yearning for a normal family, John escapes into the new and exciting world of rock 'n' roll where his fledgling genius finds a kindred spirit in the teenage Paul McCartney. Just as John begins his new life, tragedy strikes. But, a resilient young man finds his voice -- and an icon explodes into the world. Blu-ray Release date: January 25th, 2011

WUSA - Paul Newman plays a jaded disc-jockey who offers his services to WUSA, a right-wing hate station broadcasting from New Orleans. While struggling with his own apathy, he starts spreading hateful messages perpetrated by Pat Hingle, a power-mad master of WUSA. Joanne Woodward plays a working girl who arrives in town the same day as Newman and falls for the alcoholic disc-jockey. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg (Cool Hand Luke) and based on Robert Stone’s Best Selling Novel “A Hall of Mirrors’”. The all-star cast includes Anthony Perkins, Don Gordon, Moses Gunn, Cloris Leachman and Laurence Harvey as a corrupt preacher. “Glory Road” sung by Neil Diamond. DVD Release Date: February 8th, 2011

Paula-Paula - An "audiovisual experience" based on Robert Louis Stevenson's Jekyll/Hyde novel, PAULA-PAULA is more of a vehicle for the music tracks that late Austrian jazz composer Friedrich Gulda's (who scored Franco's masterful SUCCUBUS/NECRONOMICON) family gifted to Franco recently. Interpretation wise, I think the Jekyll and Hyde reference is just there to get the audience to read an interpretation into the "narrative." Fragments are dropped here and there in between interludes of the other Paula dancing (her image distorted with a split mirror digital effect that turns her into a shapeshifter with two bodies, sometimes three breasts, two faces, no face, her limbs multiply and twist, and so on) and a twenty-five minute make-out session between the two Paulas. PAULA-PAULA opens up some ponder-worth avenues of interpretation, but it plays better as its own soundtrack or an album with visuals. DVD Release Date: February 8th, 2011

The Sinister Eyes of Dr. Orloff - Produced by Jess Franco's own Manocoa Film company, THE SINISTER EYES OF DR. ORLOFF is a rather ordinary inheritance thriller (not unlike some of Hammer's PSYCHO cash-in thrillers of the sixties). Recurring "in name only" Franco character Dr. Orloff couldn't be farther removed from his usual haunts (stalking beautiful women to use various tissues and fluids to revive an ailing daughter or wife, usually named Melissa) but the theme of hypnotic control is shared by this film with some of Franco's other works like DIABOLICAL DR. Z, NIGHTMARES COME AT NIGHT, VOODOO PASSION, and MIL SEXOS TIENE LA NOCHE. DVD Release Date: February 8th, 2011
