(NOTE: The Title is actually "A Farewell To Arms")

directed by Charles Vidor
USA 1957

A Farewell to Arms is the second film version of Ernest Hemingway's World War One novel--and also the last film produced by David O. Selznick (Gone with the Wind). Rock Hudson plays an American serving in the Italian Army during the "War to End All Wars". Jennifer Jones is his lover, a Red cross nurse. They have a torrid affair, which results in Jones' pregnancy. As the months pass, Hudson and Jones lose contact with one another, and Jones believes that Hudson has forgotten her.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Resen - Region FREE Blu-ray - April 2014 - Interesting to see the improvement. It confirms the film's softness is inherent. The 1080P does advance the detail, the image is brighter, skin tones cool and look more realistic. It is superior than the SD, but I think you'd have to appreciate the film's heaviness. This is dual-layered with a reasonable bitrate so I wouldn't expect the other German Blu-ray to have a better image quality. The original English-language audio is lossless (DTS-HD Master 2.0 stereo at 1811 kbps). The score by Mario Nascimbene (Barabbas, Love in the City) gains some benefit from the uncompressed transfer. But there are multiple subtitle options including English, German and Spanish - and the disc is region FREE. No extras except a trailer.  Tough call - I really like Rock and Jen Jones so I see some value in the Blu-ray but others may not.

***

ON THE DVD: This image is anamorphic at approx. 2.35:1 and is progressively transferred. Black levels are very strong and at times the picture quality is a little soft and colors look pasty. It does tend to look heavy at times too, but overall it is weak but acceptable. Included with the optional English, French and Spanish subtitles are monaural audio with DUBs of the last two.

Extras include a trailer and some Fox Movie-Tone news clips at the time of release. Fox is seen as doing adequate DVD production, rarely stellar and rarely any flops. This again is middle of the pack and we aren't complaining too much.  out of
