(aka "John Carpenter's Christine" )

directed by John Carpenter
USA 1983

She was born in Detroit on an automobile assembly line. But she is no ordinary automobile. Deep within her chassis lives an unholy presence. She is a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury named CHRISTINE, whose unique standard equipment includes an evil, indestructible vengeance that will destroy anyone in her way. She seduces 17-year-old Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) who becomes consumed with passion for her sleek rounded chrome-laden body. She demands his complete and unquestioned devotion and when outsiders seek to interfere, they become the victims of Christine's horrifying wrath. John Carpenter brings Stephen King's best selling novel to life in this chilling thriller.

Better than you standard fare for this genre (teen occult?) and the commonplace North American obsession with automobiles drives the plot. well acted and genuinely scary - a kind of Halloween-ish pop-corn flic. out of

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were ripped directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Twilight Time - Region FREE - Blu-ray (March 2013): Since this is already out-of-print (3000 copies limited - in a couple of weeks) I won't take up too much time. Twilight Time's package is great - the 1080P image quality shows immense improvement - especially via the colors with Christine's reds looking far richer and deeper. Contrast also takes a large leap forward. The visuals are thick and detail is never pristinely crisp but this is how the film originally looked. The audio is lossless, with optional subtitles and  the soundtrack is offered as an isolated score, on the region FREE Blu-ray disc. Supplements include the commentary, deleted scenes and video featurettes. Fans of the film have spoken but many others who want will have to pay through the nose.

***

ON THE DVDs: The new Region 1 (and 4) disc looks pretty good. I'm sure we'll be adding the old NTSC version soon to this comparison. Solid extras on the new edition with a commentary and 20 deleted scenes. Good contrast and sharp - I can't tell if its edge enhancement I see, but if its there - its not overwhelming. I hate those yellow subtitles and there are a ton of options on the PAL DVD, but for the obvious we are going with the new SE. Halloween is coming !
