Video Formats & TV Standards

The TV Standards

There are basically three TV broadcast standards. The result is that not all videos are compatible with all video players and TVs.

The 3 standards are:
* NTSC (used in USA, Canada, Japan & others)
* PAL (used in Great Britain, mainland Europe, Australia & others)
* SECAM (used in France, Greece, Russia)

Each TV system is different, NTSC uses 525 horizontal lines per image, wheras PAL and SECAM use 625 lines. The encoding system in PAL and SECAM are not campatible, hence we have three TV standards. These standards are widely used in other countries not listed above.

TVs and VCRs are usually wired to work with only one broadcast standard (e.g. PAL) so that a PAL TV and VCR will only correctly play PAL tapes and transmissions. The video tape format (e.g. VHS) has no bearing whatsoever on the ability of the TV to reproduce the signal. In other words, if you put an NTSC VHS tape into a PAL VCR, you will not get a viewable picture, and that goes for the other mediums like DVDs and laserdiscs. In some countries PAL/NTSC compatible TVs are sold commonly.

DVD Regions

(To learn about DVD regions, read the FAQ below.)

These are the main 6 DVD regions (or "zones"):

1: U.S.A., Canada, U.S. Territories
2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian Subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
6: China

Video Formats

There are primarily 3 video storage formats in common use, VHS, DVD and Laserdisc. These are storage formats like audio cassette and CD and are NOT to be confused with TV standards, since pre-recorded titles on those mediums are only 'formatted' for PAL or NTSC display. Laserdiscs are still a good format that gives good quality picture and sound, but the technology is dated and DVD has become the next logical step. It could be said that DVDs have picked up where Laserdiscs left off. Japan is perhaps the only remaining country (or mighty close to it) that is still producing some laserdisc titles (as of 2001). However, it's only a matter of time before the makers stop manufacturing the medium for good.

What makes the DVD format so special?

The picture quality is double that of VHS and you can get a lot of extra things on DVDs that VHS and even laserdiscs were never meant to support, for example more than three multiple audio tracks and a capacity to include up to 32 optional subtitles.

Can I watch your DVDs/videos in my country? + What is "regional encoding"?

Most of the DVDs that we carry are coded for Region 2. With DVDs, aside from having to deal with the NTSC/PAL/SECAM issue as with VHS tapes, one has to take the "regional encoding" issue into consideration. The world is sliced up into 6 DVD "regions (zones)", and regional encoding limits what countries a disc can be used in. For instance, a region 2 encoded disc will not playback on a player normally sold in region 1 countries and vice versa. However, DVD players of different regions can be obtained through some specialized dealers in many countries, as well as code-free and code-switchable players. Some major publishers started using an active region checking program code on their DVD titles which checks for the proper region setting in the player. This program is called Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE), and these "smart discs" employing RCE won't play on code-free players that are set for all regions. Manual code-switchable players that allow you to change the region using the remote control can play RCE discs (for now).

Are the titles English dubbed or carry English subtitles?

Unless otherwise specified in the product description, all DVD titles of Japanese movies and animes are in Japanese language only. In general, all DVD and video titles of non-Japanese movies carry language tracks in their original languages, unless a VHS title is specified as a "Japanese dubbed" version. Most DVD subtitles are optional (I.e. removable). Laserdiscs and VHS videos of non-Japanese movies have Japanese subtitles that are not removable as in the case of DVDs. However, letterboxed laserdiscs containing movies in Cinemascope and Panavision aspect ratio (2.35:1 or 2.40:1) usually carry subtitles on the bottom black bar so as not to obstruct the movie's image.

Aside from Regions, DVD also are noted by these categories:

DVD 5 one side, one layer

DVD 9 one side, 2 layers
DVD 10 is two sides, one layer
DVD 14 two sides, one dual layer, one single layer (never seen one)
DVD 18 is two sides, two layers, quite rare

Why buy discs from other regions? Because you’re getting screwed on many huge titles here in the US+ Canada! Your favorite TV shows are released in other countries while we are forced to wait forever for a US release just for syndication purposes. Sometimes the US distributor of a film does not have access to good materials, or they just lack the capital to do a film properly. This FAQ is designed for the beginner, as well as the veteran...

THE BASICS

1-Why can’t I play these DVDs right now?

Because in their infinite wisdom, the studios separated the world into 6 regions, so that they could release movies when they feel like it, instead of in a timely manner. That and to make sure that their foreign divisions make big money on their books, instead of just caring about the company bottom line. (I’m not bitter  ) Discs from other regions are locked out from working on players not in their home region, necessitating purchasing a new player or modifying existing ones. Buying a modchip kit for an existing player in the US is virtually impossible, and very expensive, so you’re better off just buying a new deck.

One of the big obstacles to watching these discs is that many countries, including most of Europe (UK, France (TVs are SECAM, but DVDs are PAL, Australia also uses PAL as well) are using the PAL TV standard, while North America and Japan use NTSC, and. 99% of Hong Kong DVDs are in NTSC even though the local standard is PAL
Thanks to most American’s indifference to the world around them, 99% of US televisions only support 1 standard, while a large percentage of foreign sets support NTSC and PAL.

2- So if they’re in PAL, AND a different region code, how can I play them anyway?

Well, if you’re looking for a set-top player, you have 2 good choices

1- Malata N996
This player is progressive scan, has Dolby Digital and DTS decoders built in, and features virtually flawless PAL to NTSC conversion. It also has some wonderful tweak modes for the hard-core user. On the downside, menus are somewhat in “Chinlish” and sometimes hard to decipher

Available from
http://www.avdeals.com -$289 shipped

2- JVC ??????

Not as tweakable as the Malata, but a well-known manufacturer and contains the same PAL/NTSC conversion chip as the Malata.

OPTION 2

Home Theater PC

You will need a program like DVD Genie(http://) or Region Killer (http://), and if your DVD-ROM drive is newer than the year 2000, you will need to download a new firmware for it. A good site that deals with putting together an HT PC is http://www.

Another side benefit of an HTPC is that you can run DVD Subber (http://www.dvdsubber.com), this program is mostly used for watching anime, but anyone can create a subtitle script for a film. This opens up a whole new world of foreign DVDs that you don’t have to depend on the studios for English subs.

If you’re looking for an HDTV and a multistandard set, you might look at the Sampo ???????? ($999). It is basically a 27” computer monitor, and supports all formats, the 16:9 squish, progressive scan, AND has a VGA input for an HTPC.

SPECIAL SECTION ABOUT HONG KONG MOVIES

In the US, most of these films are released by Disney and Columbia Pictures. Columbia has figured out that these movies need to be done properly, and has started their “Destination Films” line to release Asian media properly
Meanwhile, Disney (through Miramax and Dimension) continue to butcher these films in the extreme, releasing them severely edited and with totally new, dubbed soundtracks. To top this off, they are actively threatening exporters both domestically and in Hong Kong(where they have no rights to the films) with lawsuits if they continue supplying the US with DVDs.

HONG KONG LEGENDS

Think the Criterions Collection for Hong Kong film. Great transfers, extras and proper, original language tracks and subtitles. http://www.hongkonglegends.co.uk

Worldwide list of mainstream retailers

Argentina Retailers :

The sites that appear to accept international orders (Info. as of march05,02 based on what I could determine via language-translation sites) :
º http://www.dvdventas.com.ar/
if you click on "Ayuda", you are taken to a "Preguntas Frecuentes"(, i.e. FAQ) In it, there is mention of different methods of payment that are accepted. Towards the bottom of the page under the title "Zona Geográfica Días hábiles para la entrega" is a list of what countries to which dvdventas will ship. Therefore, this list seems to indicate shipping to all parts of the world. But I could not find a part of the site that lists specific shipping&handling fees. I also could not determine what is the significance of the click-able list of Latin American countries on the title page (Info. last updated on March05,02)

º http://www.dvdmovies.com.ar/
"Formas de Pago" is forms of payment; "Preguntas Frecuentes" is Frequent Questions". If you click on "Preguntas Frecuentes" and then "Compras", you'll find more information on both handling of credit card information & ordering (more information on this can also be found here: http://www.dvdmovies.com.ar/terminos.html ), and wording that leads to the assumption that international orders are accepted : "y 35 pesos a países del resto del mundo" or "35 pesos to countries of the rest of the world". Further information (though still vague regarding international orders) can be found here: http://www.dvdmovies.com.ar/s-cart/...s-exterior.html (Note: using http://www.dvdmovies.com.ar/Medio.html seems to cause the site to load incorrectly with a lot of the site missing) (Info. last updated on March05,02)

º http://www.musimundo.com or http://www.musimundo.com/librosol/inicio.cfm
(The site for me loads VERY slowly. Aside from that, I'm impressed with the layout/arrangement of the site and its contents. There's an FAQ/Help section if you click on the "?"-icon in the upper right corner. There's a table half-way down the page detailing the shipping&handling fees to different parts of the world (It appears that this site delivers worldwide) )

The Argentina retailers that do not seem to have any identifiable or clear statement or information regarding international orders :
º http://www.dvdnext.com.ar/
seems to be incomplete or at least not operating correctly (Info. last updated on March05,02)

º http://www.lk-tel.com.ar or http://www.lk-tel.com.ar/home.asp
The only information regarding international orders that I could find was under "FAQ"-link. With a rough translation of the text under "Cómo debo de hacer para abrir una cuenta en Lk-Tel si quisiera poner un videoclub?: ", it appears that this site is a club that you must join first. And that each potential order is dealt with on a case-by-case basis depending on the location. (Info. last updated on March05,02)
Australia Retailers :
For the Australian retailers that offer shipping by DHL (http://www.dhl.com.au/),
here is a brief explanation of it as offered by http://store.yahoo.com/dvdcrave-au/info.html#Ordering :
"When choosing DHL (http://www.dhl.com.au/) there are several advantages.
Obviously the major benefit is the speed of the delivery which is 2 Days to most Capital Cities
all around the world. Also the tracking system which allows you to see exactly where you order is in transit, and when to expect it. With DHL (http://www.dhl.com.au/), a signiture and name is required when being delivered, so this will also prevent any lost and stolen parcels. From a safety and security point of view, DVD Crave recommend you chose DHL International Express as your delivery option."

º http://www.dvdpriser.dk/
(I haven't had any time to explore what all this site offers. But after stumbling around, it appears as though you can proceed straightaway to price-comparing by clicking on "DVD-Film Region 2". Then, type in the name of the title for which you're looking beside "Søgeord", and then click on "Top 10" underneath "Info" to get a list of the 10 cheapest prices for that title.)

Price Comparison for Retailers in Germany :
    º http://www.schnellkauf.de/
(At the top of the page, you can click on "shops" to proceed to a list of 29 or so retailers. When you do this and proceed to that list, you can click on "Versanddetails" to view some details on that retailer such as accepted forms of payment along with some other details that are not clear to me due to the rough translation from altavista)

      or

(Click on "dvd" to proceed to another page. Now, you can either proceed straightaway with price-comparing by simply typing in a title in the blank space or you can click on one of the commands. Here, with (rough) translations done by me with altavista, are what the commands will do:

(Click on "Best Buy" to see "The current TOP good deals, whose price particularly deviates from the cut")
(Click on "billig" to see a list of titles whose price lies between the two monetary values (from 0 to 75 EUR and from 5 to 80 EURO) which are adjustable by you)
(Click on "preisrutsch" to see a list of the "price reductions [that] were found in the last 7 days")
      (Click on "hilfe" for help)
(Click on "standard" to return to price-comparing for a particular title which can be entered inside the blank space)

A sleave is where we open the DVD from the shrink wrap and insert the DVD into a sleave (see picture to the right) We then insert the disc back into the case with a piece of foam or tape to hold it in position. This method ensures that discs are not damaged by coming out of their holding mechanism."
