Directed by
Philip D'Antoni
USA 1973
As New York City cops wage a war against assorted hoods and criminals after one of their own is brutally killed by a hoodlum - a tough detective, who is part of an elite unit, is trying to find solve the murder (his partner), but uncovers a plot to kidnap mobsters for money. This is a fast paced action thriller with car chases and a lot of 70's appeal of that kinetic milieu. A notch below Bullitt and The French Connection (both produced by Seven-Ups director Philip D'Antoni), but still has some merit for its gritty realism and working cop charm.

Considering this is only a single layered DVD (meaning both ratio formats could have been put on the same side), the DVD image looks quite good. There is a bit of digital noise but overall the appearance is quite strong with no prevalent damage and acceptable sharpness and contrast. Both mono and stereo audio formats are clean and consistent. I'm a bit surprised that Fox is still offering the 1.33 version on the opposite side of the DVD these days and luckily I looked to see some unique Special Features depending on the side. All kind of strange DVD authorship if you ask me. The featurette, on the widescreen side, has very poor video quality and at less than 8 minutes doesn't offer too much. Perhaps one of the lesser films of the boxset its a fine choice for addition. Roy Scheider does a good job and it is filled with 70's nostalgia. |
