Six internationally acclaimed
feature films from Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski (The Decalogue,
Tri-Colors Trilogy, The Double Life of Veronique). Among hours of previously
unseen special features, each DVD in this series will bring recent interviews
with cinematographer Slawomir Idziak, filmmaker Agnieszka Holland and previously
unavailable short documentaries directed by Kieslowski.
All written and directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski, are some of the most important
works of Kieslowski’s early feature-film career––and his most significant steps
towards a career shift from documentary to fiction films. With the completion of
THE SCAR in 1976, Kieslowski left behind 10 years of “cinema of consciousness”
and ventured into the realm of feature-length fiction filmmaking. "I'm
frightened of real tears," he once said. "In fact, I don't even know if I have
the right to photograph them." (Kieslowski

Although non-progressive the Kino transfers have minimal visible combing. Other than that the DVD image is acceptable, in the correct aspect ratios (1.66 or 1.33), clean of artifacts, no major damage, excellent removable subtitles, original audio and some fabulous extra features including interviews with notables such as Idziak, Insdorf, Holland, Zarnecki, Cinematographer Petrycki, Actress Szapolowska, Producer Strzakowska and more. There are also a number of shorts by Krzysztof Kieslowski. I suspect that this entire package has been ported from the existing French MK2 (non English subtitled) releases which Kino does quite frequently (they probably have some arrangement), including the extras - but Kino have thankfully added optional English subtitles. I found no visible proof that they were taken directly from PAL masters although there is evidence now that they are. Initially I thought this was quite expensive, but for what you get supplement-wise, it is quite understandable... and if purchased in the Collection Boxset you can see a substantial savings ( $26.96 US X 6 = $161.76 - Boxset = $89.96 - Savings = $71.80). This is an absolute must-have DVD package and we give it a very high recommendation! |
