(aka 'Rebound')

The HBO docu-drama "Rebound" is stacked with a great cast (Don Cheadle, Forest Whitaker, James Earl Jones, Clarence Williams III , Ronny Cox, and even Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (as himself) ). , It is the true story of Earl "The Goat" Manigault, a New York City playground basketball legend. We see him overcome a heroin addiction - one which was his big stumbling block to playing in the NBA. With almost mythical athletic ability, Manigault at only 6-foot-1 could snatch $20 bills off the top of backboards, and "double dunk" a ball while floating in mid-air. At some point in time, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar claims he was the best player he'd ever seen - adding to the legend. So consequently "The Goat" becomes that of the greatest player that you 'never heard of'. Well done sports/drama with La Salle showing blotches of greatness. Basketball fans will deem it a must-see, and many others will simply enjoy as a touching story of responsibility, personal drive and furtiveness with blatant social commentaries tucked in. Comments:

I've seen some marvelous early HBO DVDs, but this is not one of them. There is constant blurriness in motion sequences. Colors seem accurate and the audio is acceptable, if on the quiet side. This would have greatly benefited from English subtitles as the slang lingo can come at an alarming pace. There are no extras, that would have been a useful bonus in delving further into the current 'legend'. It does have a very weak Spanish dub. Sloppy work, when such a good storyline deserved more. out of
