(aka "Il Mio nome è Nessuno")

directed by Tonino Valerii + Sergio Leone
Italy 1973

" It goes without saying that, in many ways, My Name is Nobody is not just a movie about the dying West, but is also a movie about a dying genre. By the 1970s, the days of the Western were pretty much over, even in Italy. Urban action films were the new form of entertainment -- the modern world once again has to kill off the Old West to make room for itself. It's hard to make a movie about movies (without it actually being about movies) without also having it be trite and annoying (see Scream, or better yet, don't). My Name is Nobody works wonderfully as both an allegory for a dying time and an allegory for a dying genre.

It's typically great, typically powerful, and typically meaningful stuff from Sergio Leone, a director (or co-director) whose stuff is anything but typical. You won't find too many spaghetti westerns this offbeat or this good. I would hazard to say that, well, Nobody is as good at them as Leone."

Comments: ADDITION Paramount - Region 2 - PAL - Sept 05':

In an odd situation (read below) our computer generated screen captures are not as applicable as usual.

From Sergio Leone Web Board: ...there's quite a heated debate going on at the biggest German DVD message board between fans and the producers.

There seem to be several points people disagree about:

NOTE: The transfer itself seems to be gorgeous, but due to contractual reasons Paramount Germany was forced to use a certain studio for the mastering process. The result were progressively encoded DVDs that don't sport a progressive flag which tells the DVD player how to handle the content. As a result of this, people watching their DVDs on a computer (or HTPC) are getting less than overwhelming results.

What this all means is that most software programs that many might use to play this German DVD require a flag to tell it which setting would be best. As there is no flag encoded the default setting of "Forced Weave" might be selected resulting in an image rife with combing in horizontal pans. So for these captures we have chosen the 'auto select' which has chosen the 'Forced Bob' setting which results in a gorgeous image.

Mark says: "That would/could explain it. I saw none of that when viewing on my (projection) system. I would even be so bold as to say it is One of the best looking PAL DVDs I have."

Mark says about the Image Disc: "I had the R1 Image that came out recently. Stopped it after the Barber Shop scene it was so bad. Tons of aliasing and line twitter. Also looked like a lot of artificial sharpening had been applied. You can see it in your R1 screenshots."

BOTTOM LINE: The German DVD regardless of the captures (although looking closely they do tend to support it - German - depth of field, Image- brightness boosting) is the definitive issue to own, for image (HTPC viewers may need to adjust their settings), and extras (see above). Buy the German Paramount DVD!

*******

Well we can easily dismiss the SME as the inaccurate aspect ratio and vertical squeezing of the characters in the PAL edition is more than enough reason to forget this purchase.

The lazy typist in the ancient-now WHAM edition who put in "Henry Ford" instead of "Fonda" gave me the biggest chuckle in a while. The Morricone soundtrack listings on the WHAM are reason enough to grab this if you are truly interested in the film. It's worth a few $ alone.

Obviously the new Image Entertainment DVD is the superior in terms of color (I still think skin tones are too red), aspect ratio and it shows both other editions have been cropped and the Image disc aliases terribly (it's quite horrendous). It is a shame that it is so bare bones as this is a fabulous film folks - a real Spaghetti western gem. - perhaps the best.
