(aka ""The Dick Van Dyke Daytime Show" or "Head of the Family")
created by Carl Reiner
USA 1961-1966
As far as I m
concerned one of the defining moments of sitcom television was launched with the
premiere of The Dick van Dyke Show in 1961. I wasn't even born then, but
have seen every episode numerous times in syndication growing up. Dick van
Dyke's physical comedy is a blueprint for the likes of Jim Carrey in today's
culture. The casting including Mary Tyler Moore worked with such chemistry that
it is hard not to fall into the off-beat anecdotal fun-loving stories of comedy
writer Rob Petrie, his wife Laura, son Ritchie, neighbors Millie and Jerry,
co-workers Buddy, Sally and Mel and boss Alan Brady. TV is no longer as
wholesome and innocent as this fantastic time-capsule of the 60's.

Not much parity in this comparison. The BFS version entitled "Six Classic Episodes" came out a few years back and is great, IF Image Entertainment didn't produce these two stunning boxsets. The image quality is no contest with IE winning quite easily. The sound is pretty good on both. I absolutely adore this show with its strong fundamental values and physical comedy. There are no Extras on the BFS, but a boatload on the Image Entertainment. For those that just want a sampling of Dick van Dyke and not go whole hog ($$$) then the BFS edition with its poorer quality should suffice. For true die-hard fans then the Image boxsets ( season 1+2 available) are a must. - Gary W. Tooze |
