| Both transfers were taken from new low contrast prints culled from the original camera negative. The Anchor Bay transfer was supervised by cinematographer Luciano Tovoli. While minimal edge enhancement (pic#2) and some artefacts (e.g. Anchor Bay, red center tile in pic#1) are present on both transfers, the Dragon image is softer - probably softened to reduce grain (pic#4) - and the Anchor Bay picture suffers from occasional chroma noise (pic#9). The Anchor Bay's framing of ~2,35:1 is closer to the original theatrical projection than the Dragon's ~2,40:1. Compared to each other one of the transfers always appears a bit tilted (Anchor Bay in pic#6, Dragon in pic#4). Suspiria was shot on Eastman Color Kodak (not on Technicolor stock as is widely assumed) and printed using the 3-strip Technicolor process. The rich color palette is presented well on both transfers. The Dragon's coloring is warmer (pic#2, pic#3, pic#4) and brighter (pic#5, pic#7, pic#10) than the blueish Anchor Bay picture, but most of the time Anchor Bay sports a better balanced contrast level (pic#2); the Dragon DVD loses details from color bleeding due to oversaturation at times (pic#8). | |||||||||||||||
